Chapter 189: The Black Pyramid [2]
The eyes opened in the darkness. They were massive, each one the size of a carriage wheel, burning with ancient crimson fire.
The stone constructs froze mid-motion, their bodies locked in place like statues.
The darkness from the passage spilled across the chamber floor, crawling up the walls, swallowing the red glow from the gaps.
Damon gripped the Chaos Devourer tighter. The fragment in his other hand pulsed with heat, eager to merge with the blade.
"Who’s there?" Damon called out.
The eyes shifted. They focused on him.
The voice came again, deeper this time, rattling the pillars.
"I am the Warden of the Lost Fragment. Keeper of the Chaos Seal. You have taken what was forbidden."
Damon didn’t flinch.
"The fragment belongs to this sword," he said, raising the Chaos Devourer. "It called me here."
Silence.
The darkness rippled. A shape emerged from the passage, massive and slow, like a mountain learning to walk.
It was a creature of black stone and ancient roots, its body woven from the same material as the pyramid itself. Its chest was a slab of obsidian etched with formation scripts that glowed with crimson light.
Its arms ended in claws that scraped against the stone floor.
It stood thirty feet tall.
The Warden of the Lost Fragment.
"You carry the Chaos Devourer," the Warden said. "The sword that consumed worlds."
"It’s mine now."
"The sword has no master. It consumes all who wield it."
Damon smiled.
"Then I’ll be the first exception."
The Warden’s eyes narrowed. The formation scripts on its chest flared brighter.
"Bold words for a mortal."
"I’m not mortal."
Damon released his Polymorph.
His true cultivation surged outward, Heavenly Spirit Realm Seventh Level pressure slamming into the chamber. The stone constructs cracked under the weight of it.
The Warden didn’t move.
"Heavenly Spirit Realm," it said. "Impressive for your age. But not enough."
It raised its claw.
The darkness in the chamber condensed into spears of solid shadow, each one aimed at Damon.
"You will return the fragment," the Warden said. "Or you will die."
Damon looked at the spears. There were dozens of them, each one capable of piercing through his defenses.
He looked at his companions. Ariel had her trident ready. Mio had an arrow nocked. Mia had vanished into the shadows. Seraphina was gathering wind energy.
They were ready to fight.
But Damon didn’t want to fight.
He wanted to win.
"System," he thought. "Can I absorb the fragment while fighting?"
[Yes. The Chaos Devourer can integrate the fragment during combat. However, the process will leave you vulnerable for three seconds.]
Three seconds.
An eternity against a creature like this.
But the alternative was a prolonged battle that might kill his women.
"Start the integration," Damon commanded.
[Integration initiated.]
Heat exploded from the fragment. The dark crystal melted into liquid shadow that flowed up Damon’s arm and into the Chaos Devourer.
The sword screamed.
Not in pain. In hunger.
The blade drank the fragment’s energy, and the inscriptions along its surface began to glow, dark purple light bleeding from the edges.
The Warden’s massive form shuddered, the hollow voids of its eye sockets flaring with furious crimson light as a sound tore free from its chest.
"You dare!"
Then the shadow spears launched.
All of them. At once.
A storm of condensed darkness screaming across the chamber with the shriek of displaced air, each spear trailing ribbons of void energy as they converged on the single point where Damon stood.
Damon moved.
Astral Steps carried him across the platform as the spears struck where he’d been standing, shattering the stone into rubble.
He landed on the wall, running sideways, the Chaos Devourer still drinking the fragment’s power.
Two seconds left.
The Warden swung its claw.
Damon jumped. The claw passed beneath him, carving a trench through the wall.
He twisted in midair and landed on the Warden’s arm, running up toward its chest.
One second.
The formation scripts on the Warden’s chest flared. Crimson energy gathered at its core, preparing to release a blast that would vaporize everything in the chamber.
Damon reached its chest.
He drove the Chaos Devourer into the formation scripts.
[Integration complete.]
The sword exploded with power.
Darkness erupted from the blade, not the absence of light but the absence of everything. Space itself warped around the impact point.
The formation scripts shattered.
The Warden’s energy blast backfired, detonating inside its own body.
The creature staggered. Its chest cracked. Black blood, thick and molten, dripped from the wound.
Damon pulled the sword free and jumped back, landing on a platform twenty feet away.
The Warden fell to one knee.
The chamber went silent.
Damon stood there, breathing hard, the Chaos Devourer humming in his hand.
The sword felt different now. Heavier. More alive.
The fragment had awakened something in it.
The Warden looked up at him. Its crimson eyes had dimmed, the fire fading to embers.
"You... are the master of the sword..." it said.
"I told you. I’m the exception."
The Warden was silent for a long moment.
Then it laughed.
A deep, rumbling sound that shook the chamber.
"Perhaps you are."
It lowered its head.
"The seal is broken. The fragment is yours. I have no purpose here anymore."
It began to crumble, its stone body cracking apart, falling into dust.
"One warning," it said, its voice fading.
"The sword’s spirit has awakened. It will test you. It will try to consume you. Do not let it."
The Warden collapsed into a pile of rubble.
The darkness in the chamber receded.
The stone constructs crumbled.
And Damon stood alone on the platform, the Chaos Devourer in his hand, the fragment’s power flowing through his veins.
He looked at the sword.
For a moment, he felt something looking back.
"Not yet," he whispered.
The presence retreated.
Damon sheathed the sword and jumped across the platforms to his companions.
Ariel grabbed him. "Are you okay?"
"I’m fine."
"That thing almost killed you."
"But it didn’t."
Mio and Mia appeared from the shadows. Seraphina released her wind energy.
Damon looked at the passage where the Warden had emerged.
"There’s more in there," he said. "I can feel it."
He started walking.
The others followed.
