Incubus Lord: Lust Harem System

Chapter 243: The Path Forward

The group walked through the sect grounds as the evening light painted the stone paths in shades of amber and gold.

Damon kept his pace steady, his women moving around him like a constellation orbiting its sun.

Ariel squeezed his hand.

"You really think she’ll come around?"

"She will."

"How can you be sure?"

Damon glanced back toward the arena, where Lark still stood alone on the platform.

"Because she’s smart enough to know when she needs help. And desperate enough to take it."

Mio skipped ahead and turned to face them, walking backward with a grin.

"So we’re adding her to the harem now?"

Mio asked, still walking backward, her deep purple ponytail swaying with each step, a bright and entirely unsubtle grin spreading across her face.

"Not yet."

Mio tilted her head, eyes narrowing with the particular curiosity of someone who had already made up her mind about the answer.

"But eventually?"

Damon’s lips curved into a slow, unhurried smile, the kind that carried the quiet certainty of a man who had never once doubted the direction his life was moving.

"Eventually."

Mia said nothing, but a small, knowing smile flickered across her face.

Seraphina stretched her arms above her head, her joints popping audibly.

"I need a bath. And food. And about twelve hours of sleep."

"Same," Flare muttered.

Alena was still muttering about her Spirit Moss, her fingers twitching as though she were already processing the herbs in her mind.

They reached the base of the mountain path that led up to Selene’s mansion.

The air grew cooler as they climbed, the spiritual energy thickening with each step.

At the courtyard entrance, Neko sat cross-legged on the stone bench, her cat ears twitching at their approach.

She hopped off the moment she spotted them and sprinted across the stones.

"Master!"

She slammed into Damon’s chest and wrapped her arms around his waist.

He rubbed her ears.

"Did you behave while we were gone?"

Neko pulled back just enough to look up at him with wide, luminous silver eyes, her expression the picture of affronted innocence.

"I always behave."

From somewhere behind them, Ariel let out a short, undignified snort, raising one delicate hand to cover her smile.

Neko twisted in Damon’s arms to shoot her a flat, reproachful look, her white ears swivelling backward.

"I do."

"You tried to eat Selene’s cultivation pills," Ariel said, her vivid blue eyes dancing with barely contained amusement. "The ones she keeps locked in the jade cabinet."

"I was curious," Neko said, with the absolute certainty of someone who saw no meaningful distinction between ’curious’ and ’correct.’

"But you ate seven of them, Neko."

There was a brief, telling pause. Neko’s fluffy white ears slowly flattened against her silver hair, pressing down against her skull in a manner that managed to look simultaneously sheepish and deeply committed to her own defence.

"They were small," she said finally, her voice quiet but firm.

"Very small."

Damon laughed and carried her through the courtyard, her legs dangling as she clung to him.

Selene stood in the doorway, her arms crossed, her silver hair catching the last light of dusk.

Her eyes swept over the group and landed on Damon.

"Took you long enough."

"We had things to handle."

Selene’s gaze lingered on Flare, Seraphina and Alena, taking their measure with the sharp assessment of someone who had spent decades reading people.

"New additions?"

"They are Alena, Seraphina and Flare"

Selene raised an eyebrow.

"Busy trip."

"You have no idea."

Inside the mansion, the group scattered.

Ariel headed for the bath with Mio and Mia in tow, their voices carrying down the hall as they debated which oils to use.

Seraphina claimed a couch in the main hall and collapsed onto it without ceremony.

Alena found a corner and began laying out her herbs, her focus narrowing to the task at hand.

Flare stood in the center of the room, uncertain, her arms wrapped around herself.

Selene approached her.

"First time?"

Flare nodded.

Selene’s expression softened, just barely.

"The first few days are strange. You’ll get used to it."

"How do you know?"

"Because I was where you are now."

Selene turned and walked toward the kitchen.

"Come. I’ll show you where the tea is."

Flare hesitated, then followed.

Damon watched them go, a quiet satisfaction settling in his chest.

Neko appeared beside him, tiger ears twitching, tugging his sleeve with both hands.

"Master."

Her voice was soft but direct, carrying none of the political weight or careful calculation that coloured every other conversation he’d had that day.

"Are you going to fight in the tournament?"

"Yes."

She considered this for a moment, her long silver tail swaying slowly behind her as she processed it, the way she always did when something new and important was settling into her mind.

"Will you win?"

He looked down at her. At those eyes, so guileless and absolute in their faith, carrying none of the doubt that plagued every other soul in the sect.

There was no hesitation in her question, no fear buried beneath it.

She simply wanted to know.

To her, the answer was obvious, and she was merely waiting for him to confirm what she already believed.

"Always."

*****

Night fell over the mansion.

Damon stood on the balcony of his room, the cool air brushing against his skin.

The sect lay below him, its buildings and training grounds reduced to scattered points of light.

The tournament was coming.

The Eastern Continent Tournament.

The best young cultivators from across the continent, all gathered in one place, all competing for glory and power.

And somewhere in that crowd, the Reventon family would be waiting.

Kai had been humiliated.

His family would not let that stand.

Damon’s fingers tightened on the railing.

He thought about Lark.

About the weight she carried.

About the way her hands had trembled when he said her name.

She would come.

He was certain of it.

But whether she came as an ally or a liability depended on what she chose in the days ahead.

A soft knock pulled him from his thoughts.

He turned.

Ariel stood in the doorway, her hair still damp from the bath, a thin robe wrapped around her.

"You’re thinking too loud."

"Am I?"

She crossed the room and stood beside him, her shoulder brushing his.

"Want to talk about it?"

"Not really."

"Want to do something else?"

He looked at her.

The moonlight caught the curve of her smile.

He pulled her closer.
