Infinite Cashback: My Wealth Rebate System

Chapter 47 | A Mystery in Purple

Jason clicked yes, and for a second nothing happened. Then the notification split into two, stacking neatly on top of each other like a menu waiting to be scrolled through.

[Reward 1: Physical Optimization I]

[Reward 2: ??? — Locked until Reward 1 is claimed]

He stared at the second one longer than he needed to.

Mystery box. Very trustworthy system design

He filed the question marks under things to worry about in a minute and focused on the one he could actually read.

[Removes accumulated fatigue. Improves posture. Increases muscle definition to the level expected of someone who has consistently trained for several months. Future improvements require real training.]

He read it twice, then a third time, mostly because he didn’t trust the first two readings to have actually landed.

"So it’s not giving me muscle," he said out loud, to the empty apartment. "It’s giving me the muscle of a guy who’s been doing the work. Except I haven’t been doing the work."

The system, predictably, did not respond, because it apparently only spoke in bracketed statements and had never once held an actual conversation.

So what’s the catch. There had to be one. Fatigue didn’t just uninstall itself for free

Not on a night this specifically committed to testing his faith in good things. He read the last line again.

...Future improvements require real training.]

That, at least, sounded like the catch showing its face honestly instead of hiding in fine print.

[Claim Reward 1?]

[Yes] [No]

He didn’t hesitate this time. Hesitating hadn’t exactly been working out for him on any front tonight.

"Yes." He tapped it before the word had fully cleared his head.

Nothing happened for a full second, long enough for him to feel mildly stupid for talking to a UI element, and then the feeling hit.

It didn’t hurt, which was the first surprise. Warmth instead, starting low in his chest and spreading outward, unhurried, like standing too close to a fire that had decided not to burn him.

His shoulders moved first. Not him moving them, they moved on their own, drawing back a fraction, correcting years of slouching in one smooth motion. He actually gasped, the small, undignified kind of gasp a person makes when their own spine surprises them.

"Okay," he said, quieter now. "That’s new."

The tiredness went next. Not gradually, but all at once, like someone had reached into his chest and switched off a machine he hadn’t realized was still running.

Then came the part he genuinely wasn’t ready for.

He looked down at his own forearm, and it was, unmistakably, not the forearm he’d walked in with. Nothing cartoonish, just definition where there’d been none, a visible line where muscle met muscle, the kind of thing you saw on people who spent actual hours of actual weeks in an actual gym.

I have never once paid for a gym membership

He thought, staring at his own arm like it belonged to a stranger wearing his shirt. *

This is deeply unfair to every person who’s ever done a push-up on purpose and worse for those who paid for the memberships.

He stood, testing whether the rest of him matched and surprisingly it did

"This is insane," he said, laughing once, short and unsteady.

[Note: Future improvement requires consistent training. System will not maintain results without continued effort.]

That line landed heavier than the rest combined.

Not free. I know it’s obviously not free.

The system had built him a starting line, generously, unearned, and then informed him showing up to the race was still his problem.

"Fine." He flexed his hand once, testing the unfamiliar shape of his own forearm. "I can work with a head start."

He looked at the second notification, patient, unbothered by the fact that his entire understanding of his own body had just been quietly rewritten.

[Reward 2: ??? — Locked until Reward 1 is claimed]

It unlocked as he looked at it, question marks dissolving into text, and something in his stomach did a small, complicated flip before he’d read a single word.

[Reward 2: Physical Optimization II]

[This reward is a mystery box. Description withheld. To claim: consume the provided item tonight and sleep for a minimum of 8 hours for effects to take place.]

Jason read it twice, waiting for more detail to appear, the way the first reward had at least told him what he was signing up for. Nothing else loaded.

"That’s it?" he said, to the apartment, to the system, to whatever was apparently listening. "No description. Just eat this and go to bed, trust the process."

Taking in an unknown item provided by an unknown system. This will either turn out to be the best decision I make all year or the plot of a very specific kind of documentary.

He paused to think about it but then remembered the $500 sitting in his account which he got just by hugging Sarah and then looked at his arms and his entire muscle structure which then led him to a final decision

Well. It hasn’t lied to me yet.

[Claim Reward 2?]

[Yes] [No]

"Yes," he said, already committing to the bit of talking out loud at this point, since apparently that was just who he was now.

A small box materialized on the table where absolutely nothing had been a second earlier, no flash, no sound, just there, like it had always been there and reality was only now catching up to the fact.

"Okay, that’s genuinely unsettling," he muttered, staring at it like it might move first if he didn’t.

He picked it up. Light, smaller than he expected, and inside sat a single pill. Purple. Not a shade he associated with anything remotely medicinal, more the color of something you’d find in a kid’s vitamin gummy or a suspicious energy drink.

"A purple pill," he said flatly. "A normal color to give a pill that is safe for consumption. Very FDA-approved-looking."

He turned it over in his fingers, and for one honest second actually considered not taking it. The system had undeniably granted him rewards in exchange for pushing him to the limits emotionally and physically

But a system asking him to swallow an unlabeled pill and just go to sleep was a slightly different category

And the pill is purple

Then again he thought, the alternative is I spend the rest of the night wondering what I missed out on. And tonight has already cost me enough wondering.

"Bottoms up," he said, and swallowed it before he could talk himself out of it a second time.

He waited. Braced, honestly, for something, warmth again, maybe, or that same low hum from earlier.

Nothing happened.

He stood there for a few more seconds, checking his own hands like they might reveal something. They didn’t.

"Anticlimactic," he said. "Very anticlimactic for something that came in its own spontaneously-generated box."

[Reminder: Sleep for a minimum of 8 hours for effects to take place.]

"Oh that’s right. I guess it will be a while before I find the gravity of my decision tonight.

"At least I can sleep comfortably before that time comes"

He dropped onto the bed and pulled up his messages, thumb hovering for a second before he opened the thread with Ben.

Jason: need to start hitting the gym tomorrow. you going tomorrow?

Ben: yeah I am. Why are you asking, have a change of mind?

Jason: actually yeah. I’ll be going to the gym tomorrow

He sent it and just after a while he found it necessary to send a follow up message

Jason: and actually workout

Ben: that’s crazy man. I’m definitely coming if that’s the case.

Ben: 7am tomorrow

Jason did the math against the eight hours he apparently owed the system, factoring in that it was already a few minutes to ten.

Jason: yeah, that works

Ben: alright. see ya tomorrow, be early

He set the phone down on his chest, satisfied, one more piece of tonight’s chaos slotted into something resembling a plan.

His phone buzzed again almost immediately.

He glanced down, expecting Ben to have already changed his mind about the time.

It wasn’t Ben.

Sarah: hey

Jason stared at the single word for longer than a single word probably deserved.
