Chapter 49 - 46: To Hell with Authority

As they walked, Xiao Ningning tried to make small talk, all the while looking for an excuse to get handsy with Zhang Ji.

But Zhang Ji didn’t take the bait. His replies were clipped, and he flatly refused to discuss life, dreams, or relationships.

His gaze subtly swept over their surroundings.

Zhang Ji could sense people following them—more than one. And he had a feeling one of them was a serious threat.

’They must be this young lady’s bodyguards.’

’It’s perfectly normal for a big shot like her to have a couple of bodyguards.’

Seeing that Zhang Ji refused to take the bait, Xiao Ningning’s playful mood began to fade.

’I’ve led him far enough anyway.’ She stopped abruptly and shot Zhang Ji a cold glance.

Zhang Ji barely reacted to her sudden change in expression. ’It makes sense for a spoiled brat like her to be so moody.’

"I was going to play with you a little longer, but since you’re so uncooperative, I suppose it’s time to end the game," Xiao Ningning said.

As Zhang Ji heard this and was about to reply, a sharp, needle-like pain jabbed at his temple. On instinct, he executed a fluid sidestep, instantly leaving his spot.

PFT!

A small crater appeared in the ground where he’d been standing, whatever hit it having bored deep into the earth.

Zhang Ji looked at Xiao Ningning, bewildered. ’If she can’t have something, she has to destroy it?’

Xiao Ningning had already stepped aside. Several figures materialized around her, forming a protective circle.

There were seven of them in total, all professional-grade fighters. A middle-aged man in black stood among them, about a step behind Xiao Ningning.

The middle-aged man exuded a subtle but oppressive aura, something Zhang Ji found unsettling. It was the unmistakable presence of a Grandmaster—an expert whose Spirit and vitality had been honed to an incredible degree.

"Kill him!" Xiao Ningning ordered her bodyguards coolly.

She could have just sent assassins after Zhang Ji, but she’d insisted on coming herself, despite the risk.

After all, she loved to play.

Too bad Zhang Ji wouldn’t play along.

All the other men she’d played with had humored her. But Zhang Ji refused her that courtesy. He wouldn’t become her new toy, and that infuriated her—even if her initial goal had only been to get revenge for her last one.

’Is she a psycho?’

Zhang Ji’s expression darkened as he looked at the six bodyguards aiming their guns at him.

’From his point of view, all he’d been doing was peacefully training at the Five Elements Sect. Then some rich girl insists on bothering him, and when she doesn’t get her way, she decides to just kill him.’

’If that’s not crazy, what is?’

BANG! BANG! BANG!

A volley of bullets flew toward him, but in Zhang Ji’s eyes, they no longer seemed to move so fast.

With a slight shift of his body and a sweep of his hand, he batted all the bullets out of the air.

Then, Zhang Ji opened his hand, and several bullets dropped from his palm.

Now that he had mastered the Snake Form Fist, Zhang Ji could replicate what Zhou Hao had once done—and do it even better.

"Eldest Miss Xiao," Zhang Ji said, "don’t you think it’s a bit domineering to kill someone just because they don’t do what you want?"

’Her status is clearly not low,’ he thought. ’I’m still building my strength in the Eastern Extreme Country. It’s best to avoid a direct conflict if I can.’

’It’s frustrating, but in this world, when you’re not strong enough, you can’t always do as you please.’

"Domineering? HAHAHAHA!" Xiao Ningning burst out laughing. "So what if I am? I’m the eldest miss of the Xiao family! My father and grandmother dote on me. There’s nothing in this world I can’t have if I want it. Why should your life be any exception?"

’Complete psycho.’

Zhang Ji was now certain she had some serious mental issues.

"I’m done playing."

Zhang Ji turned, intending to use his Body Technique to get away before she could say another word.

’I can’t get tangled up with these people.’

"Stop him!" Xiao Ningning commanded.

The six bodyguards rushed forward to block Zhang Ji’s path.

Zhang Ji’s movements were fluid. With a flurry of palm strikes, six figures went flying. They collapsed to the ground, bodies wracked with a paralyzing, aching numbness, completely unable to get back up.

"Hmph!"

With a cold snort, Zhang Ji started to give Xiao Ningning a wide berth as he left.

’I don’t care if I offend this rich girl. I’m not playing along.’

’I don’t like this kind of game.’

As Zhang Ji drew near Xiao Ningning, her expression shifted slightly.

In that moment, she seemed to realize that coming here in person had been a mistake.

’These martial artists are like human weapons. Before Zhang Ji, I’m nothing but a mouse that he could crush at any moment!’

Just as Zhang Ji came within five meters of Xiao Ningning, the middle-aged man in black finally moved.

In an instant, he was in front of Zhang Ji, thrusting a palm straight at his chest.

A vast wave of energy backed by tremendous force crashed into him. Zhang Ji’s expression flickered. In the next instant, he twisted his body slightly, exhaled sharply, and contracted his muscles. He managed to dissipate a huge amount of the force, but the remaining power was still beyond his imagination.

WHAM!

Zhang Ji was thrown back more than ten meters. When he landed, he stared at the middle-aged man, his expression utterly grim.

His chest throbbed with a dull ache.

’If I hadn’t mastered the Snake Form Fist, I wouldn’t have been able to take that last hit.’

’It would have shattered my Iron Body Skill’s defense completely.’

’Even so, my defense was still breached.’

"As expected of the Diamond Sect’s Horizontal Training. That blend of hard and soft is truly remarkable," the middle-aged man praised.

"What are you wasting your breath on him for, you old fool?! Kill him! Kill him now!! I want him dead!! If he doesn’t die, your sons, your grandsons, your disciples, and their disciples will all die!!" Xiao Ningning shrieked hysterically.
