Chapter 1: Connection Established
Strapped to a chair in the dimly lit room was Morden, who was currently too occupied to bother with the people in front of him.
The string of text he was looking at came as too much of a shock; in fact, all the events of the last few hours came as a shock.
[Ding!]
[Connection to the Omnisphere Established]
[Morden Tales will be transported to the Omnisphere to undergo the First Bearer Trial in ten minutes.]
"Ten Minutes, what am I supposed to do in Ten minutes?"
’What do I do? what do I do?" Sweat beads slowly formed on his head.
’And what the hell is the First Bearer Trial?’ he thought while turning to look at the woman currently standing over him with a domineering face.
She had arrived not too long ago, and since she had arrived, only strange things have been happening.
’Is she causing me to hallucinate or something?’
While he was being interrogated earlier, he had suddenly felt a strange itch at the back of his hands, and before he knew it, there was a full tattoo etched on it.
He had gotten a Bearer Tattoo.
And then things quickly changed; he had moved from being a Murderer charged with killing his family to a Bearer in a few seconds.
Morden, or at least the Current person in Morden’s body, was originally from earth. He had died alone in a hospital bed with no single family by his side.
While taking his last breath, he couldn’t help but smile at the thought of finally getting peace, but the world had other plans, Instead of opening his eyes in the afterlife or its equivalent.
He woke up in a living room, blood all over him, and his family lying dead in front of him, but that wasn’t the end; Morden could feel himself smiling at the sight.
From that moment he knew something was absolutely wrong.
"You should have gotten the notification, right?" Morden heard the woman say from his side.
But instead of responding, he shut his mouth and turned away.
’How did she know?’ he said to himself.
"I know because I have also experienced it too," the woman responded to his thoughts.
’Uhhh? Did she just read my freaking mind?’
"Yes, yes, I did," she responded out loud again.
The two officers that had previously beaten Morden felt their hearts tighten in fear from the strange incidents.
"We will leave now, miss." The leading officer made an excuse before scurrying away with his assistant.
The woman turned to look at the leaving figure without saying a word before returning her attention to Morden.
"You are about to be transported to the Omnisphere, where you will undergo your trial to become a Bearer," her tone sounding a bit uncaring.
’Bearer?’
From the memories that were slowly merging with his, Morden had realized that the world he was currently in wasn’t anything like earth, it was ruled by super-powerful beings called Gene Bearers, or Bearers for short.
"In your trial you will be given the chance to find a Genetic Beast to kill, and then you will Obtain a Gene to record."
"Whatever kind of gene you record will determine the ability you will have," the woman explained.
’Hmmm, so there’s no real limit then; anything is possible," he thought with a nod.
"Exactly, and that’s why you could have killed your family," she said with a sudden serious face.
Shocked by her sudden accusation, Morden couldn’t help but stutter a bit as he responded.
"I didn’t... "I didn’t kill them."
The woman stood there, listening to his response with a strange smile on her face. It looked as if she were everything that was happening, strangely.
"That’s also right, you didn’t do it. But why were you seen standing over their body with a smile on your face,"
Hearing the last part of "face," Morden didn’t have a response to that; he himself doesn’t know.
"I didn’t kill them, and you know it," he shouted out again in defense.
"I know, and that’s why you are still strapped here and your head is not already completely detached from your body."
"You didn’t do it, at least not directly; that’s why I am currently standing in front of you."
"I will be asking you a very specific question now, and don’t even think about lying to me; you know I will know."
Observing the shift in the woman’s face and tone, Morden couldn’t help but swallow his saliva.
"So here goes."
"Did you see anything when you woke up, anything, anything at all that might point us to the actual killer," the woman asked.
"And also you might have to hurry; your time is running out."
"My time is running out? Aren’t you supposed to help me prepare instead of interrogating me right now?" he asked.
"No, I am not supposed to; hurry and answer the question."
Silence enveloped the room as Morden fell into deep thoughts, a sign of how important the whole thing is to him.
"Did I see anything? Did I see anything?" he kept mumbling to himself.
In order to remember, Morden couldn’t help but close his eyes to picture the scene again. But seeing that scene again, Morden felt himself growing increasingly tense, his muscles tightened, and his teeth clenched.
"Oh yes, I remember now. I saw something; I saw a red Light,"
"It was faint and it disappeared fast, but yes, I am sure I saw it," he said with firm eyes.
The Woman in front of him looked at him with a serious face before nodding, her current thoughts known only to herself.
"Careful of that red light."
"The next time you see it, it might just be your last day alive."
Despite her serious look, Morden’s eyes didn’t show obedience; it showed something else, something dangerous.
"Thank you for your time; you have ten seconds left," the woman said.
"Final warning: Make sure you don’t die in there, or I might have to kill you."
"That being said, five,"
"Four,"
"Three,"
"Two,"
"One,"
"Good luck, Morden Tales."
