Chapter 86: VOLCANIC BLUEPRINT
The safehouse backroom in Sector 09 was thick with the scent of hot engine grease, dried jasmine leaves, and the sharp, metallic tang of unshielded ancient energy.
Outside, the subterranean underbelly of Aethelgard hummed with its usual nocturnal rhythm—steam pipes hissed, distant freight lifts groaned along rusted iron tracks, and street vendors shouted prices for cheap, fried street snacks. But inside the brick-walled workshop, every eye was locked onto the center of the wooden workbench.
Resting on a thick velvet cloth was the 14th-Cycle Gold Data Sphere retrieved from the ruined stage of Aegis Plaza.
The palm-sized, multi-faceted metallic orb pulsed with a slow, rhythmic golden luminescence. Intricate, geometric pre-Cataclysm runes flickered across its polished surface, casting warm, hypnotic patterns against the exposed brick walls of the safehouse.
"Boss... this isn’t just an archive key," Alistair Vance’s frantic voice crackled through the copper comms speaker mounted on the wall. The hyper-caffeinated scholar was speaking remotely from their newly built border stronghold in District 7, the background noise of his workshop filled with clinking brass gears and the loud, angry hiss of his espresso machine. "I’m running a remote diagnostic loop through the silver terminal you set up! The data density inside that Gold Sphere is off the charts! It’s holding over three petabytes of compressed 14th-Cycle architectural schematics!"
Noah Kurtz sat calmly on a low wooden stool beside the workbench. His dark coat was unbuttoned, his slouching posture completely relaxed. Underneath his sleeves, his black ironwood forearm guards hummed in a gentle, Silver-Tier Ki cadence, keeping the sphere’s passive energy output contained within the room.
Pinned over his left coat lapel, the simple, dark ironwood leaf brooch glinted under the golden light.
"Filter out the municipal power matrices, Alistair," Noah spoke smoothly, his flat voice an absolute pool of quiet calm. "Isolate the subterranean maintenance conduits beneath NovaCox Facility Zero."
"Right, right! Filtering now!" Alistair shouted, the sound of keyboard keys clattering rapidly through the comms. "Wait... sacred mother of copper gears... Boss, NovaCox built their entire primary core-mining facility directly over an active volcanic caldera! But their engineers didn’t dig those lava tunnels!"
Noah’s steel-gray eyes narrowed slightly. "They built over a pre-Cataclysm thermal vent."
"Exactly!" Alistair blurted out, slurping what sounded like his fifth mug of coffee. "The Gold Sphere schematics show an ancient 14th-Cycle geothermal vault buried two miles beneath the magma floor! NovaCox thinks they’re mining high-tier fire cores, but in reality, their heavy drills have been scraping against the outer shell of the Gold Archive for five years without even knowing it!"
Chloe Harrington leaned against the doorway, idly tossing a fried dough stick into her mouth before wiping her fingers on a napkin. Her midnight-black evening gown from the gala was gone, replaced by her familiar leather duster and holstered dead platinum revolvers.
"Which means NovaCox’s security grid is entirely focused on keeping rival corporate guilds out of the upper mining levels," Chloe remarked with a rebellious smirk, spinning her silver coin around her knuckles. "They have no idea there’s an unmapped maintenance chute running straight from the subterranean lava conduits into the vault’s back door."
"An unmapped chute filled with three-thousand-degree magma, Chloe," Jiho Park mumbled from the corner of the room.
Jiho was sitting on an inverted wooden crate, carefully patching a small tear in his tuxedo pants with a thick bone needle and heavy fishing line. His faded, scuffed slide sandals were back on his feet, clicking lazily against the brick floor.
"Master," Jiho yawned, setting his needle down and rubbing his sleepy eyes. "I know my physical density is pretty high, but three-thousand-degree liquid rock sounds like it’s going to singe my sandals. Can we buy heat-proof socks before we go into a volcano?"
Noah looked over at the broad Juggernaut, a faint, dry hint of humor touching his voice. "The Gold Sphere schematics include the kinetic blueprint for the vault’s ancient cooling conduits, Jiho. As long as we activate the primary bypass valve, the magma flow in Chute 04 will divert into the lower vents."
"So no melted sandals?" Jiho asked, his droopy eyes flashing with genuine hope.
"No melted sandals," Noah confirmed dryly.
"Awesome," Jiho grinned, leaning back against the wall and immediately closing his eyes for a nap. "Wake me up when it’s time to smash volcanic mechs."
Sitting directly beside Noah on the wooden bench was Rin Asakura.
The Blind Sword Saint wore her comfortable dark blue kimono once more, her simple wooden practice sword resting across her lap. Her black silk blindfold was turned toward the glowing Gold Data Sphere, though she saw no golden runes or geometric light patterns. Through Asura’s Touch, her hyper-precise sensory grid mapped the sphere as a dense, vibrating sphere of pure kinetic harmony—a pulse that resonated in perfect, synchronized frequency with the man sitting beside her.
Rin reached out across the workbench, her pale, delicate fingers sliding over the cool wood until her hand found Noah’s left wrist.
Her fingers wrapped gently around his skin, feeling the steady, unhurried rhythm of his Silver-Tier Ki loop.
Through skin contact, Noah channeled a subtle thread of warm, zero-waste energy into her meridians, keeping the damp, nocturnal chill of the basement workshop from reaching her hands.
"The sphere carries no hostility, Noah..." Rin whispered softly, her melodic, formal cadence carrying an intimate warmth that touched the quiet room. "Unlike the Church arrays or the corporate weapons... its pulse feels like an old song waiting to be sung."
Noah turned his head toward her profile, his steel-gray eyes softening with a rare, quiet tenderness.
"It’s a memory of a time before the System, Rin," Noah spoke softly, his calloused fingers gently turning inside her grip, holding her pale hand firmly in his palm. "Before men built glass screens to measure each other’s worth."
Rin’s pale lips curved into a serene, breathtaking smile beneath her blindfold. She leaned her weight slightly into his space, her shoulder resting comfortably against his arm as she held his hand with gentle, unyielding trust.
"Where you walk, Noah..." Rin murmured softly, her breath warm against his sleeve, "that memory becomes real."
Chloe looked over from the doorway, a soft, affectionate smirk touching her lips as she caught sight of Noah wrapping his fingers around Rin’s hand. She flipped her silver coin high into the air and caught it with a crisp, satisfying snap.
"Alistair," Chloe called into the wall comms, her tone filled with playful sarcasm. "Are the volcanic coordinates ready? The Boss and Rin are being disgustingly sweet over here, and Jiho’s already snoring."
"Coordinates locked and loaded!" Alistair yelled back over the speaker. "The maintenance chute opens directly into the Aethelgard Volcanic Rift, four miles south of the central city! But be careful, Boss—scanners show that High Priest Jeremiah of the Archive Church moved a heavy Templar battalion toward the caldera two hours ago! The Church knows you hold the Gold Data Sphere!"
Noah Kurtz slowly stood up from the bench, sliding the glowing Gold Data Sphere into his inner coat pocket. Pinned over his lapel, the ironwood leaf brooch glinted under the safehouse lantern light.
He didn’t flare an aggressive aura. He didn’t offer a dramatic speech. His slouching posture remained completely relaxed, his steel-gray eyes carrying an absolute, unflinching clarity that filled the room.
Rin stood smoothly beside him, her pale fingers sliding naturally back into his palm, her wooden practice sword secured at her hip.
"Jiho, wake up," Noah spoke flatly. "We’re leaving for the volcanic rift."
Jiho snapped his eyes open instantly, swinging his massive canvas duffel bag over his shoulder with a broad, sleepy grin. "Lead the way, Master! Let’s go see this volcano."
Together, hand in hand, Noah Kurtz and Rin Asakura stepped out of the black-market safehouse into the dark alleyways of Sector 09, leading the Shadow Vanguard toward the volcanic caldera where the Gold Archive lay waiting.
