Chapter 38: GUNSLINGER’S BAD DAY
The central transit exchange connecting District 7s slums to the high corporate sectors looked like a graveyard of modern technology.
Massive overhead mag-lev tracks, stripped of their glowing blue levitation fields hung dead and silent against the pitch- sky. Dozens of luxury commuter cars dangled precariously off steel rails their glass windows shattered and their high-tech control panels dark. Down on the rain-slicked concourse beneath the tracks the sub-zero wind carried a suffocating stench: scorching ozone pooling blood and the acrid tang of burnt gunpowder.
CLICK. CLICK. CLICK.
A sharp metallic sound echoed frantically through the darkness of the ruined transit hall followed by a furious curse.
"Work you over-priced corporate piece of scrap! Work!"
Chloe Harrington slammed the butt of her custom revolvers against her armored thigh her knuckles white inside her fingerless leather tactical gloves. She was nineteen years old sporting a messy crop of dyed crimson hair and clad in a dark leather duster jacket embroidered with the silver gear-and-lightning crest of the Harrington Syndicate.
Her revolvers—forged from high-density platinum alloy and engineered to compress atmospheric mana into lethal armor-piercing kinetic rounds—were completely dead. With environmental mana density crushed to zero by the Black Sky the internal ignition arrays inside the weapons refused to create even a microscopic spark.
"Lady Chloe!" a corporate enforcer yelled, staggering backward while holding a heavy alloy riot shield that had been caved in by physical impact. "Our plasma rifles are completely dead! The battery cells are fully charged,. The atmospheric ignition vector isn’t responding! We can’t suppress them!"
"I have eyes, Marcus!" Chloe snapped, her amber eyes flashing with wild rebellious fury as she thrust her dead revolvers into her thigh holsters. "Stop screaming like an academy rookie. Draw your side blade!"
"My side blade is a mana- edge!" Marcus shrieked as a shadow lunged from the pitch-black fog behind him. "It’s a dull piece of cold iron now!"
CRACK!
A jagged, like claw tore straight through Marcuss heavy tactical chest plate. The enforcer was lifted five feet off the ground before being slammed onto the cracked concrete his blood splashing across a dark corporate advertisement pillar.
From the pitch- shadows surrounding the ruined transit exchange, a dozen fiery crimson eyes snapped open.
[Environmental Entity Identification]
Name: Shadow-Veined Lurkers
Threat Rank: High B-Rank (Mutated Void Swarm)
Behavior: Atmospheric Predators. Thrives in zero-mana zones; hunts living thermal signatures.
They were horrific spindly quadrupeds eight feet tall their bodies made of shifting mist and petrified iron armor plates that absorbed the faint ambient light. They possessed no faces— gaping needle-toothed jaws dripping with acidic black saliva.
The remaining four Harrington Syndicate guards panicked completely. Stripped of their high-tech firearms their defensive energy barriers and their Association radar feeds the elite corporate bodyguards broke formation. Ran blindly into the dark screaming in terror as the Lurkers pounced upon them one by one.
Crunch! Shriek!
Within thirty seconds the entire Harrington vanguard squad had been brutally slaughtered, leaving nineteen-year-old Chloe Harrington standing alone in the center of the concourse.
"Dammit... Dammit all " Chloe spat, wiping a smear of rain and soot from her cheek as three eight-foot Shadow Lurkers slowly encircled her their needle-toothed jaws clicking in anticipation.
She wasn’t a rigid corporate heiress. She was a gunslinger whose unique talent—Probability Distortion—allowed her to tilt the mathematical odds of physical reality in her favor.. Probability luck meant nothing if she didn’t have a functional weapon to trigger kinetic force.
She reached down drawing a twelve-inch tactical steel combat knife from her boot strap. Her breathing was fast. Her amber eyes burned with an unyielding stubborn defiance.
"Come on then you ugly tin cans " Chloe growled, adjusting her stance on the concrete. "I’m not dying in a lower-district subway station!"
The lead Shadow Lurker let out a pitched terrifying screech and lunged forward its massive iron claws raised to slice her in half.
Chloe shifted her body preparing to execute a high-risk dodge.
Puch.
A tiny soundless ripple cut through the -zero air.
Before the Shadow Lurkers claw could descend, a slender dark figure appeared from air directly behind the monsters towering frame. The intruder made zero sound—no footstep against the concrete, no air friction and no flare of magical energy.
It was a slouching man wearing a worn dark coat with frayed cuffs his ash-black hair whipping softly in the freezing wind.
Noah Kurtz didn’t look like a hero. He didn’t emit a heroic aura nor did he yell a flashy spell name. He held a ten-credit utility knife in his right hand his thumb resting flat along the spine of the steel blade.
Circulate.
Noah’s arm moved in a minimalist, arc.
The small steel utility knife slipped seamlessly into a unarmored seam right at the base of the Lurkers petrified iron skull—the primary kinetic balance core for void-type constructs.
BOOM!
A tiny compressed spark of Ki detonated inside the monsters brain stem.
The eight-foot Shadow Lurker completely froze mid-air. Its glowing crimson eyes turned pitch-black and its massive petrified frame collapsed onto the concrete at Chloes feet with a metallic crash dissolving into a pile of harmless black ash and gray dust.
Chloe Harrington froze, her jaw dropping open in jaw-dropping shock.
"W-what..." Chloe stammered, her amber eyes wide as saucers as she stared at the slouching twenty-two-year-old who had effortlessly deleted a High B-Rank monster with a ten-credit box cutter.
Noah didn’t look at her. He didn’t even check to see if she was injured. His steel-gray eyes simply turned toward the remaining two Shadow Lurkers advancing through the dark fog.
"Jiho " Noah spoke softly his voice an absolute unflinching pool of calm amidst the nightmare.
"Got it Master," a deep sleepy voice echoed from the shadows behind him.
A massive figure stepped out from the darkness. Jiho Park casually ambled forward in his yellow t-shirt and faded slide sandals holding his canvas duffel bag over one shoulder while letting out a long dramatic yawn.
The two remaining Shadow Lurkers, sensing physical volume turned and lunged at Jiho simultaneously their jagged claws swinging downward with enough kinetic force to split an armored tank in half!
BOOM!
An explosive shockwave detonated across the concourse shattering the floor within a fifteen-foot radius.
Yet Jiho Park didn’t move. He didn’t even shift his slide sandals by a millimeter. He simply stood there scratching his belly as the two colossal monsters poured thousands of pounds of kinetic pressure straight into his unarmored forearms.
Absolute Inertia Activated.
CRACK! CRACK!
The immense kinetic rebound traveling back up the monsters limbs snapped their iron claws like brittle twigs sending shards of shattered armor flying across the room. The two Lurkers stumbled backward their internal logic matrices completely breaking down in horror.
Before they could recover Noah Kurtz executed a lightning- slip-step his body blurring into the soundless sequence of the Ashen Step.
Puch. Puch.
His twin obsidian-alloy daggers glided through the air like phantoms driving cleanly through the core processing vents in the monsters throats.
The two Shadow Lurkers went mid-motion crashing heavily onto the stone before disintegrating into gray ash.
Total silence returned to the ruined transit concourse, broken by the whistling sub-zero wind and the sound of Chloe Harringtons ragged, bewildered breathing.
Chloe stood paralyzed her tactical knife held loosely in her trembling hand as she looked back and forth between the S-Rank Tank scratching his nose and the slouching commoner in a worn dark coat who was casually wiping his daggers clean with a handkerchief.
"You..." Chloe gasped, her voice trembling with unadulterated shock as she pointed a finger at Noah. "Who the hell are you guys?! Where is your catalyst squad?! Where is your magic?!"
Noah slid his obsidian daggers back, into their sheath beneath his coat his hands returning to his pockets as he turned his steel-gray eyes toward her.
"We don’t use magic " Noah replied dryly his voice carrying a quiet weight. ". You’re standing on my transit line."
