Chapter 47: RUINED THRESHOLD
The icy drizzle that swept over the high spires carried a bitter, metallic tang, washing over the shattered marble steps where the Void-Crag Colossus had fallen into gray dust.
Evelyn Vance lay on her knees in the dirty rainwater, her pale hands trembling against the cold stone floor. Her tailored blue silk coat was soaked through, her breath ragged and shallow. She stared down the long, ruined avenue where Noah Kurtz had disappeared, his dark coat fading smoothly into the pitch-black fog alongside his strange, invincible companions.
He hadn’t looked back. He hadn’t raised his voice in anger, nor had he demanded an apology. The absolute, clinical indifference in his steel-gray eyes felt far more devastating than a physical strike. In his sight, she was not an enemy to be hated or a rival to be respected; she was simply irrelevant—a passing shadow from a fragile modern world that was currently collapsing around her ears.
"My Lady..." the sole surviving Vance Clan guard stammered, his voice choked with terror as he dragged his battered body over the shattered marble. "My Lady... we have to move. The perimeter barriers are completely dead... more of those entities will be drawn to the thermal signatures."
Evelyn didn’t answer immediately. Her fingers clenched into the mud, her knuckles turning white.
Every memory of the past three weeks played on a cruel, endless loop inside her head: the quiet black-market lounge, the dark transit tunnel, his calm whispers guiding her casting vectors in the glitched zone... and then her own cold, arrogant voice on the rain-slicked platform, tossing twenty thousand credits onto the concrete and branding him an F-rank dead end.
"I was the fool..." Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking into a bitter, broken sob that was swallowed by the sub-zero wind. "The system... the ranks... it was all a lie..."
She had judged a man who walked outside of time using a piece of cheap corporate glass, and now she was left freezing in the ruins of her own family’s pride.
Five hundred meters ahead, deep within the primary subterranean transit concourse that connected the high spires to the northern industrial highway, the air was still and dry.
Noah Kurtz walked with a slow, rhythmic stride, his hands resting casually inside his dark coat pockets. Beneath his sleeves, the black ironwood forearm guards hummed at a low, continuous frequency, refining the stream of Ki that flowed from his lower spine through his meridians.
With the Bronze-Tier Archive unlocked and his synchronization rate at 0.25%, his perception of the physical world had reached a breathtaking level of clarity. He didn’t just see the dark stone walls; he read the structural stress lines, the airflow vectors, and the minute temperature variances in real-time.
Beside him, Jiho Park trudged along in his faded slide sandals, holding his oversized canvas duffel bag over one shoulder while letting out a long, dramatic yawn.
"Man, Master," Jiho mumbled, scratching his messy brown hair. "That girl back there was crying pretty hard. You think her family is gonna send more tin cans after us when their lights come back on?"
"Their lights aren’t coming back on, Jiho," Noah replied softly, his voice an absolute pool of calm in the dark corridor. "The modern System grid isn’t just turned off—it’s burnt out. The atmospheric mana conduits were designed for a stable environment. Now that the Black Sky has initialized, the old historical frequency is taking over."
Chloe Harrington walked two paces behind Jiho, her messy crimson hair swaying as she adjusted her leather duster. Her sharp amber eyes kept darting toward Noah’s profile, her mind still replaying the twenty-four-second execution of the S-Rank Colossus.
"Boss," Chloe spoke up, her voice carrying a mixture of wild excitement and deep curiosity. "Where does this transit arterial lead? The Harrington Syndicate’s internal maps showed that the lower industrial highway was sealed off fifty years ago during the First Rift Construction."
"Your family’s maps only showed what was built on top of the concrete, Chloe," Noah said dryly. "This arterial predates Sentinel City by twelve hundred years. It leads directly into the central core of the 14th Cycle’s primary logistics hub—what the modern Association calls the ’Dead Zone’."
Rin Asakura glided silently at the rear of their group, her dark blue kimono fluttering softly in the subterranean draft. Her black silk blindfold was turned toward the dark stone ceiling, her ironwood practice sword resting lightly in her hand.
"The Dead Zone..." Rin spoke, her soft, formal voice carrying a quiet, reverent cadence. "The Archive Church’s high diviners claimed that region was completely erased during the ancient cataclysm. They said no living entity could survive inside its boundaries."
"It wasn’t erased," Noah murmured, his steel-gray eyes glinting with a dry, ancient depth. "It was simply put to sleep. And now that the modern world’s noise has stopped, it’s waking up."
They reached the end of the basalt concourse, emerging onto a massive, cliff-side stone overlook that opened out into an enormous, subterranean valley buried deep beneath the northern sector of the city.
The view before them was breathtakingly terrifying.
A vast, sprawling ancient metropolis lay silent in the subterranean darkness, constructed entirely from massive black ironwood beams, petrified obsidian stone, and giant silver runic pillars that hummed with a cold, starlight frequency. It was not a primitive ruin, but a forgotten, ultra-advanced fortress city from the 14th Cycle, preserved perfectly in the zero-mana void.
High above the subterranean city, floating in the dark air, was a massive, triangular bronze gateway—the primary entrance to the Bronze-Tier Core Vault.
DING.

The silver system windows flickered once across Noah’s field of vision before dissolving into static particles.
"Whoa..." Chloe whispered, stepping up to the edge of the overlook, her jaw dropping open as her passive Probability Distortion vision went completely haywire. "The probability vector lines down there... they aren’t chaotic. They’re organized in a giant, perfect geometric wheel!"
Jiho looked down at the vast subterranean metropolis, letting out a sleepy chuckle as he patted his stomach. "Looks like a lot of stairs, Master. You think there’s a kitchen down there?"
"There’s an armory, Jiho," Noah replied softly, his slouching posture relaxing as he pulled his hands from his pockets, the black ironwood forearm guards glinting in the faint silver light.
He turned his steel-gray eyes toward the giant bronze gateway floating in the distance.
The fall of the high corporate spires was only the beginning. As Sentinel City succumbed to the Black Sky, Noah Kurtz was preparing to reclaim the true power of his dead past.
"Let’s go," Noah whispered into the cold subterranean wind. "We have an ancient city to wake up."
