Chapter 84: ZERO FRICTION
The cold, cobalt-tinted silence of the Imperial Ballroom hung heavy in the air.
On the marble floor below the terrace, Director Sterling of Apex Global lay unconscious, his body limply sprawled across the shattered remnants of his high-society composure. The six Sovereign Enforcers who had attempted to pin Noah Kurtz to the floorboards were pinned instead against the gilded marble pillars, their heavy exo-plate armor cracked and leaking pressurized mineral oil from Rin Asakura’s single, effortless kinetic palm strike.
High above the hall, the Grade-S Anti-Magic Field continued to hum its high-frequency tune, choking out modern mana channels and rendering the high-tier Guild Masters in the crowd completely helpless.
Yet, in the absolute center of the suppressed domain, Noah Kurtz walked smoothly toward the elevated stage.
His hands remained shoved casually deep into his suit pockets. His slouching posture was completely unbothered, as if the screaming corporate executives, the panicked guards, and the dead mana static in the atmosphere were nothing more than light rain on an autumn afternoon.
Beside him, her slender fingers linked naturally through his palm, walked Rin Asakura. Her dark blue kimono swished gracefully against her ankles, her wooden practice sword resting undisturbed at her hip. Her black silk blindfold was turned toward the stage, her face serene, unbothered, and completely at peace.
On the main stage, the CEO of Aegis Plaza stumbled backward, hitting the back of his knees against the glass display pedestal. Panic flared in his bloodshot eyes as he watched the slouching young man step up the first marble tier of the stage.
"Sover-Sovereign Vanguard! Fire!" the CEO shrieked into the podium microphone, his voice cracking violently. "Shoot him! He’s a Class-Zero Heretic!"
From the upper balconies surrounding the ballroom, thirty elite Aegis marksmen—equipped with heavy, pneumatic kinetic rifles designed to operate within anti-magic zones—aimed their iron sights directly at Noah’s chest.
THWIP-THWIP-THWIP—!
A volley of heavy, armor-piercing iron slugs rained down from the balcony rafters, traveling at four times the speed of sound. The projectiles tore through the air, creating localized sonic booms that shattered the nearby crystal chandeliers.
"Jiho," Noah spoke softly, his flat voice carrying zero stress.
"Got it, Master!" Jiho Park called out lazily.
Jiho didn’t even drop his silver plate. The broad-shouldered Juggernaut simply took two steps forward, stepping directly in front of the stair path. He didn’t raise a shield. He didn’t flex a flashy aura. He simply planted his faded, scuffed slide sandals into the plush carpet and let his unquantifiable physical density absorb the incoming volley.
CLANG-CLANG-CLANG-CLANG—!
Thirty heavy kinetic iron slugs struck Jiho’s chest, back, and shoulders.
The impacts carried enough force to dismantle a armored vehicle, yet as they hit Jiho’s tailored tuxedo jacket, the iron slugs simply flattened into useless silver pancakes, dropping harmlessly onto the carpet like spent coins. The ironwood-reinforced silk of his suit didn’t even tear.
Jiho picked up one of the flattened iron slugs from the floor, examining it with sleepy confusion. "Man... these central city rifles shoot soft lead. It feels like getting hit by soggy peas."
Meanwhile, on the eastern side balcony, six Aegis squad leaders attempted to manually trigger the ballroom’s secondary kinetic containment net.
"Don’t bother, boys," Chloe Harrington’s voice echoed merrily from the balcony stairs.
Chloe stood atop a marble landing, her asymmetric evening gown fluttering in the draft. Her amber eyes glowed with a faint, mathematical gold iris as her passive Probability Distortion read the mechanical linkages of the containment winch.
She raised her right hand, holding her dead platinum revolver. She didn’t aim through iron sights; her perception tracked the single, fragile luck vector where kinetic friction intersected with the winch’s mechanical release pin.
BANG.
Chloe fired a single, unpowered iron round.
The bullet struck the brass railing, ricocheted off a decorative bronze statue, clipped the winch release pin at a thirty-degree angle, and bounced directly into the primary power line of the upper security grid.
CRACK-LE—!
The entire secondary containment system backfired. The heavy iron containment nets dropped straight down—not onto Noah’s team, but directly over the six Aegis squad leaders, pinning them inside their own security alcove like caught fish in a net.
"Probability vector closed," Chloe smirked, spinning her revolver back into her dress holster with a stylish click. "You guys really need to hire better engineers."
On the main stage, Noah Kurtz reached the top of the marble steps.
The CEO of Aegis Plaza dropped his microphone, his hands trembling violently as he reached for a concealed kinetic disruptor dagger hidden inside his velvet robes.
"Stay back!" the CEO screamed, his face pale as chalk. "This Data Sphere belongs to the Triumvirate! NovaCox, Apex, and Aegis invested billions of Credits into extracting this artifact from the volcanic rifts! An F-Rank porter has no right to touch it!"
Noah stopped two paces from the glass pedestal.
He slowly took his hands out of his suit pockets. Pinned over his left lapel, the dark ironwood leaf brooch glinted under the cobalt light.
"Your guilds spent billions of Credits digging up what you didn’t build," Noah spoke softly, his flat, rasping whisper cutting through the screaming alarms of the hall. "You placed it in a glass box, put a price tag on it, and called yourselves masters of the world."
Noah reached out his bare right hand toward the floating Gold Data Sphere.
The moment his fingers came within three inches of the ancient artifact, the Gold Data Sphere’s passive security array ignited. Intricate, glowing golden pre-Cataclysm runes flared around the sphere, generating a lethal, high-frequency kinetic shearing force designed to instantly sever the arms of unauthorized users.
The CEO let out a manic, terrified laugh. "Fool! That sphere’s security grid operates on 14th-Cycle Sovereign Resonance! Touch it and your meridians will be torn to—"
Circulate.
Inside Noah’s spine, his Silver-Tier Ki loop shifted into the unyielding flow of his 1.50% Archive Authority.
Noah didn’t fight the sphere’s kinetic shearing force. He matched its exact frequency. His bare fingers passed smoothly through the lethal golden energy ring, making direct contact with the faceted metallic surface of the sphere.
Tap.
A single thread of pristine, zero-waste 14th-Cycle Ki poured from Noah’s fingertips straight into the sphere’s core.
The golden shearing force died instantly. The high-frequency hum vanishing into total silence.
The ancient Gold Data Sphere dropped smoothly into Noah’s waiting palm, its glowing runes shifting from aggressive amber to a calm, deep, and reverent gold that bathed the stage in warm light.
[Artifact Verification Complete]
Item: 14th-Cycle Gold Data Sphere (Primary Archive Key)
Authority Verified: Master of the Ashen Cabinet (Noah Kurtz)
Extracting Coordinates: NovaCox Facility Zero — Volcanic Vault Conduit
"It... it obeyed him...?" the CEO stammered, dropping his disruptor dagger as he fell onto his knees in total, shattered disbelief. "Without a System prompt... without an encryption bypass code... it just recognized him?!"
Noah didn’t answer the broken executive. He closed his fingers around the glowing golden sphere, sliding it smoothly into the inner pocket of his tailored black suit jacket.
He turned back toward Rin Asakura, who stood waiting at the top of the stage steps.
Rin took a smooth step forward, her dark blue kimono swishing softly. She held out her pale hand, her fingers sliding effortlessly into Noah’s palm. Through skin contact, she felt the deep, newly acquired Gold coordinates aligning inside his Silver-Tier Ki loop.
A serene, breathtaking smile touched her pale lips beneath her black silk blindfold.
"Did you find what you were looking for, Noah?" Rin asked softly, her formal, melodic cadence touching his ear with quiet warmth.
Noah gently tightened his grip around her hand, looking into her blindfolded face with a rare, quiet softness in his steel-gray eyes.
"I found the key to the volcanic rift," Noah said gently. "And we’re done playing high society."
"Finally," Jiho cheered softly from the bottom of the steps, casually wiping duck sauce from his mouth. "Can we get fried dough sticks on the way back? I’m still a little hungry."
"I know a great late-night stall near the Sector 09 conduit, Jiho," Chloe laughed, hopping down from the balcony railing with effortless flair. "My treat—courtesy of Director Sterling’s dropped wallet."
In the middle of the ruined Imperial Ballroom, surrounded by paralyzed guards, unconscious executives, and crying nobles, Noah Kurtz gently placed his arm around Rin Asakura’s waist, guiding her smoothly past the broken stage.
The Triumvirate’s grand exhibition had been dismantled, their Grade-S Anti-Magic Field had proven useless, and as Noah Kurtz walked out of Aegis Plaza with the Gold Data Sphere in his coat, the ghost of Sentinel City was ready to march on NovaCox Facility Zero.
