Chapter 148: The Weekly Activation
Xavier got to the restaurant at 6:20PM.
Same host. Same area of the restaurant. The corner he’d claimed the night he’d shown Selene the Millhaven tickets. The host showed him to it without being asked which meant either the host had a good memory or Xavier had been coming here often enough to qualify as a known quantity.
Both are probably true.
He sat. Ordered sparkling water. Looked around the restaurant doing its Thursday evening thing — tables filling, the particular warm atmosphere of somewhere that took Thursday evenings as seriously as it took any other evening.

$29,187,383, he noted. Clean Thursday evening.
He put the phone face down on the table.
Thursday, he thought. Her restaurant. Standing arrangement now apparently.
He cycled one more donation while he waited.

Selene walked in at 6:38PM.
Same time as always. The Thursday evening version of her — dark top, hair down, the composed energy carrying itself differently from how it had carried itself before two days in Millhaven had rearranged something underneath it. Not unrecognisably different. Just less distance between the surface and whatever was underneath it.
She saw him at the corner table.
Walked over. Sat down across from him.
Looked at him.
"You’re early," she said.
"You’re on time," he said.
"Same thing from where I’m sitting," she said.
She picked up the menu. Not because she needed it. She knew this menu the way she knew the street the restaurant was on. Just the Thursday evening habit of someone who had been coming here long enough that certain gestures had become automatic.
Xavier looked at her across the table.
Post Millhaven, he thought. Post binding. Post standing outside a childhood building on a Saturday morning and deciding it was just a building. He looked at her. Different from the woman who called from the office line to give herself cover and attributed everything to Vincent.
Not unrecognisably different, he thought. Just a closer to the version that exists when nobody is watching.
They ordered. Xavier went with a slow roasted lamb shoulder with a mint jus and roasted root vegetables. Selene ordered the pan seared halibut she’d been looking at since she sat down and a side of sautéed greens that she added at the last moment like she’d been debating it since she read the menu and had finally decided life was too short.
The food came. They ate the way they ate now, without the professional layer sitting between them, without either of them performing anything.
Selene talked about work. A case Vincent’s firm had picked up that week. Not the details, just the shape of it. The kind of thing she’d started sharing the way people shared things with someone they’d decided was inside the circle rather than adjacent to it.
Xavier listened and asked the right questions.
They talked about other things. The city. Something she’d read. A restaurant near Hale & Associates that had changed ownership and had consequently gotten significantly worse which she felt strongly about.
She’s more herself, Xavier thought. Every week a little more herself in this specific room.
Halfway through the main course she set her fork down.
Looked at him directly.
"Xavier," she said.
"Selene."
"On the flight back from Millhaven," she said. "When I asked what this was between us."
"Yes," he said.
"You said something real that we don’t need to label yet," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"I’ve been thinking about that since Sunday," she said.
He looked at her. Waited.
Four days, he thought. She’s been carrying this since the return flight and has been sitting with it and has decided Thursday evening at this table is where she asks it.
"And," he said.
She held his gaze steadily. No composed professional surface doing extra work. Just her.
"I want to know if it’s going somewhere," she said. "Not a label. Not a definition. Just direction. Is there direction to this."
Direction, Xavier thought. Not a commitment. Not putting a name on anything. Just — is this moving toward something or is it moving in circles.
He thought about it properly. Not the gauge. Not the binding mechanics or the weekly activation or any of it. Just the actual answer to the actual question.
"Yes," he said. "There’s direction."
She looked at him.
Something settled in her expression. The particular settling of someone who has asked the question they needed to ask and received the answer that was sufficient.
"Okay," she said. "That’s enough."
She picked up her fork.
That’s enough, he thought. From Selene Adler. Yes there’s direction is enough. He looked at her eating with the focused appreciation she brought to good food. She didn’t ask for more than that. Didn’t push for the label or the definition or the timeline. He picked up his own fork. Just direction. And direction is what she got.
That’s her, he thought. Exactly her.
He checked the gauge quietly under the table.
Selene Adler — 79% → 82%
Three percent, he noted. From one question and one honest answer.
82%, he thought. Close to the intermediate binding threshold.
They finished eating. The cheese board arrived between them — something the waiter brought without being asked which meant it was either complimentary or the restaurant had decided they looked like people who stayed for cheese. Xavier paid when the bill came without looking at the amount.
[ REBATE SYSTEM ]

They walked out into the Thursday evening city together.
At the point where their routes diverged naturally Selene stopped.
Turned.
Looked at him with the expression that had been getting less composed the longer Millhaven had settled into the past and this. Whatever this was with direction — had settled into the present.
"Xavier," she said.
"Selene."
"The weekly activation," she said.
He looked at her carefully.
The weekly activation, he thought. She doesn’t know about the system. Doesn’t know about the binding or the 5x return or any of the mechanics that run underneath everything.
"What about it," he said.
She smiled. The real one that arrived before she decided whether to let it. "I meant Thursday evenings," she said. "This. Every week." A brief moment. "I like having it be a thing."
Oh, he thought.
She means Thursday evenings as a standing arrangement, he thought. Not the system. Not the binding. Just this restaurant and this table and this specific version of Thursday.
He almost laughed out loud.
"Every Thursday," he said.
"Every Thursday," she confirmed.
She turned and walked toward her building without looking back.
Xavier stood on the pavement watching her go.
She called it the weekly activation, he thought. With absolutely no idea.
He walked to the Panamera still almost smiling.
[ REBATE SYSTEM ]
Weekly Binding Activation — Selene Adler
Targeted spend: $1,850 on dinner
5x effective return: $9,250
[ Net Balance: $29,178,133.00 → $29,187,383.00 ]
[ Weekly activation used ]
The system activated the binding on the Thursday dinner, he thought. Without prompting. Just recognised it as the weekly targeted spend and applied the 5x.
The system, he thought. Always knows.
He got in. Started the engine.
Tomorrow, he thought. Friday. The system has been quiet since the Karma Return on Monday.
Which usually means something is coming.
He pulled out into the Thursday evening city.
