Chapter 34: The Morning After
Xavier woke up at 7:43AM after the long marathon they had the previous night..
The top floor room was quieter than the standard rooms had been. Better insulation. The city outside the window was already moving but it felt distant from up here. Like watching something through glass.
He lay still for a moment looking at the ceiling.
The second time, he thought. Different and wild from the first.
He wasn’t sure exactly what made it different. The first time had been unplanned . From a concert to a hotel lobby, a decision made at 2AM on the edge of something neither of them had named yet. This time had been deliberate. He’d reached for his phone specifically. Booked the hotel before she’d finished responding.
The first time was something that happened, he thought. Last night was a choice.
He turned his head.
Amira was asleep beside him. Same stillness she always had.Even unconsciously she didn’t sprawl or take up unnecessary space. Just present, contained, breathing quietly.
She came in a black gown, he thought. Not burgundy. Different choice but ended up being the better choice.
He filed that away and got up carefully.
He was in the bathroom when the system chimed.
[CHIME]
[ REBATE SYSTEM ]
[ HIDDEN TASK COMPLETE ]
Deepening Bond — Bound Target
Description: Host has strengthened connection with bound target beyond surface level
Reward: +1,000 EXP
[ EXP: 14,250/50,000 ]
[ BINDING UPDATE ]
Amira Hassan — Favorability: 91% → 96%
[ Note: At 100% favorability bound target enters Maximum Bond status ]
[ Maximum Bond unlocks permanent 4x binding multiplier on all target spend ]
Xavier read through both notifications standing at the bathroom sink.
96%, he noted. Four percent from Maximum Bond.
He looked at the second notification again.
Permanent 4x binding multiplier, he thought. Not weekly. Permanent. Every transaction directed at Amira at Maximum Bond returns 4x before the base multiplier adds on top. He did the math quietly. 4x binding plus 2x base. Effectively 6x total return on bound target spend. Permanently.
He set his phone down and looked at himself in the mirror.
In my previous life, he thought, I gave everything I had to one woman who used it as furniture. Eighteen months of effort that returned nothing. He turned the tap on. Now the system literally multiplies what I give and sends it back doubled.
Different life.
He washed his face and went back into the room.
Amira was awake.
Sitting up against the headboard with the sheet pulled up, glasses back on. She must have found them on the nightstand. Looking at her phone with the composed morning expression of someone who processed things quietly and at their own pace.
She looked up when he came back in.
"Morning," she said and yawned slightly.
"Morning," he replied.
He ordered room service from the desk phone without asking. Same instinct as last time. She didn’t object.
He sat in the chair by the window while they waited. Outside the city was doing its Wednesday morning thing; traffic building, the particular energy of a day starting in earnest.
"You’re thinking," Amira said from the bed.
"I’m always thinking."
"You’re thinking about something specific." She set her phone down. "You have a different stillness when it’s specific versus general."
Xavier looked at her. "You’ve been studying me."
"You study everyone," she said. "It goes both ways."
Fair, he thought.
"Showcase is in nine days," he said.
Amira looked at him for a moment. "That’s what you’re thinking about."
"Among other things."
"Sarah’s showcase," she said. Not a question. Flat and even the way she said things she’d already processed.
"Yes," Xavier said.
She was quiet for a moment. Looking at him with the particular expression she wore when she was deciding how much of what she was thinking to put into words.
"Xavier," she said.
"Amira."
"Whatever you’re planning with Sarah." She paused. "I’m not asking what it is. I know you won’t tell me and I know it’s already in motion." She held his gaze steadily. "Just tell me one thing."
"Ask."
"Am I a part of the plan or am I separate from it."
Xavier looked at her across the room. The morning light. The glasses. The sheet. The complete absence of performance in how she asked it . No manipulation, no jealousy dressed up as casual curiosity. Just a direct question from someone who had decided she deserved a direct answer.
He looked at her. Also the only person in his life who reads the room without being told what the room means.
"Separate," he said. "Completely."
She held his gaze for a moment longer.
Then nodded once. The small precise nod of someone who had asked for the truth and received it and was choosing to accept it.
"Okay," she said.
Room service knocked.
Xavier stood to get the door.
They ate at the small table by the window. Glancing at the site of the city below them. Good food arriving without apology the way it always did at The Meridian Grand.
Amira ate and talked about the Kenvale General proposal. The expected response timeline. What a positive reply would mean for the second research phase. Xavier listened and asked the right questions and found himself genuinely engaged the same way he always did when she talked about work.
She thinks in systems, he noted again. Always has.
"You’re doing it again," she said.
"Listening," he asked.
"Thinking while listening," she said. "There’s a difference."
"I was thinking that you think in systems," he said.
She looked at him. "Is that a compliment?"
"It’s an observation," he said. "But yes."
She looked back at her food. The corner of her mouth moved.
96%, he thought. Four percent.
Close.
They checked out at 10AM.
Xavier settled the bill at the desk while Amira waited near the entrance. He joined her and they walked out into the morning together.
At the pavement outside she adjusted her bag and looked at him.
"Nine days," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"You’re going to be busy."
"I’m always busy."
"Busier than usual." She studied him briefly. "Be careful Xavier."
He looked at her. "With what."
"Whatever it is." She said it simply. "Just be careful with it."
He held her gaze for a moment.
She doesn’t know what the plan is, he thought. Doesn’t know what the showcase means or what Sarah’s favorability is sitting at or what the main quest requires. He looked at her. And she’s still telling me to be careful.
"I will," he said.
She nodded. Flagged a cab without being prompted.
Got in. Rolled the window down slightly.
"Xavier."
"Amira."
"See you later," she said. A small smile. Then the window went back up and the cab pulled away.
Xavier watched it go.
That’s it, he thought. Just see you later.
He stood there for a moment longer than he needed to.
Something about the simplicity of it sat differently than he expected. No loaded goodbye. No dramatic parting line. Just see you later like it was already assumed there would be a later.
But she was already rolling the window up. The cab pulled away.
Xavier stood on the pavement outside The Meridian Grand and watched it go.
He stood there for a moment longer than he needed to.
Then pocketed his phone and ordered his own cab.
Nine days, he thought. To Sarah’s showcase.
Focus.
