Chapter 59: The Sixth Prince’s Mercy
Rong Shuyan stared at him for a long moment and the soldier could feel sweat gathering along his forehead despite the cold air inside the tent.
He knew what he had done. Giving military information to the enemy was enough to cost him his life.
Finally, Rong Shuyan spoke. "This conversation never happened."
The soldier stared at him in shock. "Your... Your Highness?"
"Everything you told me stays inside this tent," Rong Shuyan said firmly.
The soldier’s eyes widened, meanwhile Rong Shuyan leaned back slightly in his wheelchair. "When the others ask, you will tell them that the Southern Wolf Tribe questioned you, but you gave them the information under the spell. Then, they carved that message into your arm and you escaped before they could kill you."
The soldier could hardly believe what he was hearing. "You’re... not going to punish me?"
Rong Shuyan’s gaze turned cold again. "Do not mistake my decision for forgiveness."
The soldier immediately lowered his head. "Yes, Your Highness."
"You failed to protect military information. Under military law, I have every reason to punish you."
"But you were captured because you followed an order given by your superior." Rong Shuyan paused. "And right now, knowing exactly what the enemy learned from you is more useful to me than having another soldier executed."
The soldier’s eyes burned with shame after hearing that.
Rong Shuyan turned his wheelchair toward the entrance, but before leaving, he stopped. "One more thing. If I discover that you lied about Lin Xueyi..."
His voice remained calm, but the threat behind it was unmistakable. "I will not spare you a second time."
The soldier immediately shook his head. "I didn’t lie, Your Highness. I swear!"
Rong Shuyan watched him for another moment before turning away. "Good."
His hand reached for the tent flap. "Then recover quickly. You still owe this army a life."
Not long after, Rong Shuyan came out of the tent. The physicians and several officers were still waiting outside. The moment they saw him, their attention immediately turned toward him.
General Zhou stepped forward. "Your Highness, did he tell you what happened?"
Rong Shuyan gave a small nod. "He did."
"He admitted that he gave the Southern Wolf Tribe some information about our army," Rong Shuyan stated.
The expressions around him immediately changed. "What?!"
"He revealed military information?"
One of the officers frowned. "Your Highness, according to military law, revealing information to the enemy is a serious crime. Even if he escaped and returned to us, he must still be punished."
"I know," Rong Shuyan replied calmly. "But he was under a spell."
Rong Shuyan glanced toward the tent behind him before continuing, "The Southern Wolf Tribe used a spell to force the information out of him. He fought against it for as long as he could, but eventually, he could no longer resist."
General Zhou frowned. "A spell?"
"Yes."
It was a lie, but Rong Shuyan said it without the slightest change in his expression.
He had already decided that whatever had truly happened inside that tent would remain between him and the wounded soldier.
"If he had willingly betrayed the empire, there would be no reason for me to spare him," Rong Shuyan continued. "But that is not what happened."
His gaze swept over the officers standing around him. "The fact that they needed to use a spell to force him to speak proves that he fought against them. His mind resisted because he had no intention of betraying the empire."
The officers exchanged glances. Some still looked doubtful, but no one immediately argued.
Rong Shuyan’s voice became colder. "A man who willingly betrays us is a traitor. A man who has information torn from his mind against his will is a victim."
He paused for a moment before adding, "I will not execute one of our own soldiers for refusing to betray the empire until his mind could no longer endure it."
General Zhou was silent for a moment before finally lowering his head. "Understood, Your Highness."
The other officers followed. "We understand, Your Highness."
Rong Shuyan glanced back at the tent. "Let him recover. No one is to question him about what happened while he was captured."
Physician Xu immediately bowed. "Yes, Your Highness."
Rong Shuyan then turned his attention to the officers around him. "We need to hold an emergency meeting. Gather everyone in the command tent."
"Yes, Your Highness."
Rong Shuyan looked around and quickly noticed that one person was missing. "Where is Rong Yunzhou?"
For a moment, no one answered. But then Rong Shuyan asked in a more serious tone. "I asked where the Second Prince is."
One of the soldiers finally stepped forward and lowered his head. "Your Highness, the Second Prince is still sleeping."
Rong Shuyan stared at him in disbelief. "Sleeping?"
The soldier immediately became nervous. "Yes, Your Highness. His Highness gave orders earlier that he did not wish to be disturbed while he was resting."
The air around Rong Shuyan seemed to turn cold. Dozens of soldiers had been captured because Rong Yunzhou had ignored his orders and attacked the Southern Wolf Tribe without permission. One of those soldiers had just returned barely alive, carrying a message carved into his own flesh.
And the man responsible for sending them there was sleeping?
Rong Shuyan’s fingers slowly tightened around the armrest of his wheelchair. "General Zhou."
General Zhou immediately stepped forward. "Your Highness."
"Go wake him up."
General Zhou hesitated. "But the Second Prince ordered that no one—"
"I don’t care what he ordered." Rong Shuyan’s voice was quiet, but everyone around him immediately fell silent.
"Tell him there will be an emergency military meeting and that he is expected to be there."
"Yes, Your Highness."
General Zhou turned to leave, but Rong Shuyan spoke again. "And General Zhou. If he refuses to wake up..." Rong Shuyan’s expression darkened. "Burn down his tent."
Not long after, Rong Yunzhou finally arrived at the command tent with messy hair and clothes, clearly trying to hold back his anger.
The moment his eyes landed on Rong Shuyan, his expression darkened. "Shuyan, you’ve become quite bold."
Rong Shuyan, on the other hand, didn’t even bother looking at him. His eyes remained fixed on the military map spread across the table.
"Sit down," he suddenly ordered.
