Chapter 5: The Duck That Stole His Highness’s Sleep
In the novel, he had eventually regained the ability to stand and walk. Even so, he had never shown any interest in the women around him. Because of that, some readers had enthusiastically shipped him with various male characters, while others firmly believed that he simply could not perform as a man.
Unfortunately, Lin Xueyi belonged to the second group, though she sometimes belonged to the first group depending on her mood.
On the other side of the bed, Rong Shuyan slowly took a deep breath. His fingers tightened around the blanket as he clenched his jaw.
His legs might have been numb, but his proud pillar was still standing strong without the slightest problem!
But in the end, nothing really happened. Lin Xueyi, who had been overthinking ever since she arrived in this world, quickly fell asleep once she no longer felt overheated.
Meanwhile, Rong Shuyan finally managed to drift off as well after the constant noise of Lin Xueyi’s thoughts disappeared from his mind. However, he soon discovered that she had another talent for ruining his sleep.
Lin Xueyi was a terrible sleeper.
Every few minutes, she would roll into a different position. One moment, her head was resting properly on the pillow. The next, she had somehow turned around and ended up with her head near the foot of the bed.
At first, Rong Shuyan tried to ignore it. After all, she was just moving around in her sleep and as long as she stayed on her side of the bed, he could tolerate it.
Unfortunately, Lin Xueyi seemed completely unaware of such boundaries. A few moments later, one of her arms landed across his stomach, making Rong Shuyan immediately opened his eyes.
Slowly, he lifted her arm and placed it back on her side of the bed, then he closed his eyes again.
Five minutes later, something soft bumped against his shoulder. Rong Shuyan opened his eyes once more and saw that Lin Xueyi had somehow rolled halfway across the bed. Her long hair was spread everywhere like a dark blanket, and one of her legs was now dangerously close to kicking him in the face.
Rong Shuyan let out a tired sigh. "Why are you moving so much?"
The irritation in his chest continued to grow, and he even began to wonder if he had made the wrong decision. But for the sake of learning more about Lin Xueyi’s knowledge of the future, he forced himself to stay patient a little longer.
In the end, he pushed her back to her side of the bed, but the peace only lasted for a short while because Lin Xueyi rolled over again. This time, she even wrapped herself around his arm like it was a body pillow.
Rong Shuyan froze and swallowed hard.
As someone who hated physical contact more than anything, he had the sudden urge to kick her onto the floor if only his legs weren’t numb. For a brief moment, he even suspected that Lin Xueyi was pretending to be asleep.
But when he looked at her peaceful face and heard no thoughts coming from her mind, he immediately knew that she was completely asleep, the kind of asleep that could probably survive an earthquake.
Rong Shuyan eventually tried to pull his arm away, but Lin Xueyi immediately tightened her grip. He tried again, and somehow her grip became even stronger.
In the end, Rong Shuyan gave up. He stopped trying to free his arm and simply accepted his fate, a fate that seemed determined not to let him sleep that night.
By morning, Lin Xueyi had somehow returned to the exact same position she had been in when she first fell asleep. As a result, she had absolutely no idea that she had spent the entire night making someone else’s life miserable.
[What a good sleep!] The moment she opened her eyes, Lin Xueyi happily shouted in her mind. [I haven’t slept this well in years!]
She stretched lazily. [This bed must have some kind of magic that helps people sleep so wel—Good Heavens! A ghost!]
The moment she saw a face with terrifying dark circles under its eyes, she let out a silent scream and jumped off the bed.
She quickly hid beside it, using the mattress as a shield and only after a few seconds did she slowly peek over the edge again.
The "ghost" was still sitting there, but then she finally realized who it was.
It was Rong Shuyan.
His handsome face was still as perfect as ever, but the dark circles beneath his eyes were so heavy that he looked as though he hadn’t slept for several nights in a row.
"Y-Your Highness, good morning..." she said with an awkward smile as she stepped out of her hiding place. "Did... did Your Highness sleep well?"
Rong Shuyan took a deep breath and forced down all the frustration that had already reached the tip of his tongue.
"Not really," Rong Shuyan replied calmly. "There was a duck outside my bedroom window that wouldn’t stop making noise all night. It kept me awake."
"A duck?" Lin Xueyi asked innocently. "This consort didn’t hear any duck last night."
Rong Shuyan let out a dry, sarcastic laugh. "Ha. Ha. Perhaps that’s because Princess Consort slept a little too well last night."
Lin Xueyi was about to say something when a knock suddenly came from the door.
"Your Highness," Eunuch Shen called from outside. "This servant wishes to inform you that His Highness Prince Jing has come to visit and check on your condition."
Rong Shuyan and Lin Xueyi frowned at the exact same moment. He did so simply because he disliked his brother. Lin Xueyi, however, had a much more specific reason.
[It’s Rong Mingze!] Lin Xueyi nearly exploded inside her head.
She clenched her fists and puffed up her cheeks several times, looking like an angry squirrel storing food for winter.
[He’s even worse than the original Lin Xueyi!]
The more she thought about him, the angrier she became. [That damn smiling tiger is going to make Yanyan suffer for the next twenty Chapters!]
Her fists tightened even more. [Ugh! I really want to give those stupid Chapters a one-star rating over and over again!]
If she could somehow jump into the comment section of the novel right now, she would happily spend the entire day leaving angry reviews.
