Chapter 12: Collapse of Known World
While Damien and the other first-generation Players struggled for their lives inside the Tutorial.
The world they had left behind no longer resembled the one they knew.
The world had become something entirely different.
Cities stretched across distances that hadn’t existed a day earlier.
Strange, comical walls taller than skyscrapers surrounded every civilized region.
Towering crystal spires rose from city centres, radiating soft light day and night.
Roads had shifted. Neighbourhoods had disappeared. Forests now stood where shopping malls once did.
And shopping malls... Well, some had become dungeons.
Panic spread faster than the System could issue announcements.
Millions rushed into the streets, and millions more stared silently out of apartment windows, hoping someone else understood what was happening.
Nobody did.
The only places busier than the hospitals were the enormous crystal towers that had appeared overnight.
The Class Change Towers.
Every town possessed one.
Cities possessed five.
Capitals possessed ten.
And New York City was categorised as a capital.
From dawn until midnight, crowds gathered around them in endless lines.
People couldn’t enter yet. Not while the first generation remained inside the Tutorial.
Still... Hope was a surprisingly patient thing.
Everyone wanted to be ready. Everyone wanted answers.
Most importantly...Everyone wanted power.
A young office worker repeatedly opened his status screen.
An elderly woman adjusted her glasses before doing the same.
Children watched enviously, unable to activate the System because they hadn’t reached the required age.
Although the profiles remained inactive, one feature had become everyone’s favorite discovery.
A tiny question mark sat in the lower-right corner.
(?)
Someone pressed it. Thousands copied.
Within hours, nearly the entire planet had discovered the System’s beginner manual.
[Beginner Assistance Menu]
Frequently Asked Questions
Basic System Knowledge
Common Problems
Housing
Currency
Transportation
Occupations
General Rules
The information was surprisingly detailed.
Some people even forgot the apocalypse while reading it.
Not because things had become safer. Because the explanations were strangely... comforting.
The System had anticipated confusion. Every obvious question already had an answer.
One particular announcement shocked almost everyone.
[Residential Allocation Policy]
Previous ownership records have been archived.
All private housing ownership from the pre-System era has been dissolved.
Every registered adult citizen shall receive one standardized residential unit.
Specifications:
• Approximately 100 square meters.
• Three bedrooms.
• One living room.
• Kitchen.
• Bathroom facilities.
• Fully furnished.
Housing shall be allocated in accordance with the current registered settlement.
Additional residences may be purchased through System-approved methods.
Silence followed before the internet exploded.
"So... my mansion is gone?"
"What about my villa?"
"I had four apartments!"
A different comment appeared beneath them.
"I was homeless yesterday. Today I own a three-bedroom apartment."
"...Best update ever."
Opinions varied dramatically depending on previous financial status.
Millionaires were furious. College students were celebrating.
Some families argued over whether this counted as socialism.
Others were simply happy to have a roof over their heads.
The System, naturally, ignored every complaint.
Another discovery caused fresh confusion.
Cars. None of them worked.
It didn’t matter whether it was an old pickup truck or a luxury sports car.
Engines refused to start; electric vehicles remained equally useless.
Mechanics across the world simultaneously became unemployed.
People initially assumed another bug had occurred.
Then someone opened the Help Menu.
Transportation
Outdated transportation methods have been retired.
System-approved transportation has been deployed.
"...Retired?"
"What does that mean?"
The answer arrived several minutes later. A loud whooshing sound echoed across countless cities.
People looked upward, then instantly became dumbfounded.
Long silver trains glided silently through the sky.
Not airplanes. Not helicopters. But, trains and there were no rails, no engines or visible source of propulsion.
The cabins floated several hundred meters above the streets, following invisible routes with astonishing precision.
Every carriage gleamed beneath the sunlight.
Doors opened automatically whenever a station was reached.
Children pointed excitedly. Adults questioned reality for the hundredth time that day.
An old physics professor watched one pass overhead.
He removed his glasses, cleaned them, and put them back on. The train remained airborne.
"..."
He quietly went home.
Thirty years of research suddenly required extensive revision.
The Help Menu offered exactly one explanation.
System Transit Network
Driverless Aerial Trains operate on designated spatial routes.
Passengers are advised to remain seated during travel.
Attempting to interfere with System transportation is prohibited.
That was it.
No explanation of how they floated. No discussion of physics. Apparently, asking why has become optional.
One online comment quickly became famous.
«"If you’re trying to argue with the System, you’ve already lost."»
Millions agreed.
The final revelation affected every single person alive.
Money.
Banks reopened. Only... Nothing inside them mattered anymore.
Paper bills had become decorative. Credit cards no longer functioned. Stock markets vanished from sight.
Years of investments disappeared with a single update.
Instead... The System introduced a completely different economy.
Currency Update
Previous currencies have been archived.
Official System Currency:
• Silver Coin
• Gold Coin
Exchange Rate:
1 Gold Coin = 100 Silver Coins.
System Currency may be earned through approved occupations, quests, commissions, monster-related activities, and authorized commerce.
Global markets panicked. Economists fainted. Accountants cried.
One businessman stared at his inactive bank account before muttering,
"I spent thirty years chasing numbers. My grandmother, who bakes bread, will probably be richer than I am tomorrow."
His grandmother agreed as she grinned with her teethless mouth.
Unlike the old economy, wealth could no longer be generated through speculation alone.
People would need to contribute. A blacksmith forged weapons. A pharmacist brewed medicine. A farmer cultivated crops. A hunter gathered monster materials. A chef prepared meals that restored stamina.
Every occupation suddenly mattered. Even the simplest profession held value in the new world.
As humanity struggled to understand its new reality...
One enormous crystal screen appeared above every Class Change Tower.
Only a single line of text was displayed.
First Generation Tutorial Progress
Status: In Progress
Millions looked up at those words.
Some prayed, few waited, many envied, and several feared for their loved ones trapped inside. They had no way of knowing.
It has been two hours since the 1st generation of players disappeared.
The time within the tutorial was vastly faster than in the real world.
