Chapter 55: Last Riddle

The stone giant moved again, the grind of shifting rock louder than before.

Cracks spread wider across his marble armor, ancient light leaking out through every gap until the whole garden started to glow with it. The black trees behind him rustled with no wind to explain it. He raised three fingers, and his voice came out heavier this time.

["You have spoken two truths."]

["Few reach this far."]

The sapphire light behind his visor burned brighter. ["The final question is the oldest. And the hardest."]

Damien’s pulse picked up. The Guardian planted one foot forward, and ancient symbols lit the ground beneath it, older than any written language he recognized.

One last warning came before the riddle itself.

["Three truths open the Garden."]

["One lie seals it forever."]

The air thickened around them, heavy enough to make breathing an effort. Damien’s hand went to the dagger on instinct, summoning it, then sending it right back to his inventory a second later. Not a fight he was preparing for. Just the pressure finding somewhere to go.

Daria glanced at him. "...Ready?"

He let out a slow breath. "...No." A small smile anyway. "Do we have a choice?"

The Guardian opened both hands, and the whole garden went still around them.

His sapphire eyes burned brighter than they had for either of the first two riddles, something heavier riding underneath this one.

Daria swallowed. "...Why does this one feel different?"

The Guardian answered before Damien could. ["Because this is the question civilizations rise or fall on."]

He raised one finger toward the sky, voice dropping deeper, older, edged with something close to grief, and recited the final riddle.

["No cradle bore me into dawn, Yet every child has called my name. No tongue can drink me to the last, Yet every scholar seeks the same. I dwell not, bound in ink or stone, Though libraries become my throne. The proud proclaim they carry me, The humble know they walk alone. Whoever grasps me loses me at once, Who seeks me finds me every day. Speak now the name that has no chain, Or leave this sacred place as prey."]

The words settled over the garden and stayed there. No timer appeared this time, no countdown. The Guardian simply waited.

Daria frowned first. "...Knowledge again?"

"No."

"...Truth?"

"No."

"Wisdom?"

He let that one sit without answering. It came close, closer than the others, but something about it didn’t fit clean.

He ran back through every line. No cradle at his birth, and yet every child knew his name. No mouth could ever fully drink him dry, and yet every scholar kept chasing him anyway. Not bound to ink or stone, though libraries claimed to hold him regardless.

Nothing landed exactly right yet, not Knowledge, not Truth, not Experience, not Understanding, not Reason.

Daria sat down on a nearby stone. "...We’ve still got all three chances."

"We shouldn’t burn through them guessing, though."

He nodded. "The Guardian isn’t trying to trick us. He’s been honest every time. The answer’s sitting inside the poem somewhere."

He closed his eyes and let the garden fall away, the streams, the leaves, the wind, all of it tuned out on purpose so only the words remained.

Then something caught. "...Wait."

He opened his eyes. "The proud proclaim they carry me. The humble know they walk alone." Someone who insists they’ve got it figured out usually doesn’t. A truly wise person spends most of their time aware of everything they still don’t know.

"Whoever grasps me loses me at once." The moment someone believes they’ve finally arrived at it, fully, completely, they stop reaching for it. And the second they stop reaching, it’s already gone.

"Who seeks me finds me every day." Not a destination, then. A direction. Something you kept walking toward for the rest of your life, never actually arriving, and that was the whole point of it.

A slow smile crossed his face. "...I understand."

Daria stood. "You do?"

He walked forward until he stood right in front of the Guardian and said it plainly. "...Wisdom."

She blinked. "Again?"

"Different question this time. The last riddle asked what wisdom does. This one’s asking what wisdom actually is."

He held the Guardian’s gaze. "You can’t own it. The second someone says they’ve fully got it, they’ve already lost it. A wise person never stops looking, never stops questioning themselves, never stops growing." He lowered his head, a small gesture of respect. "It’s not a place you reach. It’s something you spend your whole life walking toward."

Silence again, longer this time. Even Daria seemed to be holding her breath.

The Guardian didn’t move for several seconds. Then his massive head lowered, slow, deliberate, not a verdict this time but something closer to a bow. The sapphire flames behind his visor blazed bright, and his voice rolled out across the whole garden.

["Correct."]

Light exploded outward through the garden all at once. Golden flowers burst open across every field in the same instant, the streams sparkling like something had poured stars into the water, the two black trees shivering together as thousands of glowing petals lifted into the sky.

Daria let out a shaky laugh. "...We actually did it. I genuinely thought we were dead after the second one."

"Same, honestly."

The Guardian’s hands slid off the hilt of his stone sword. Cracks spread through the rest of his body at once, marble crumbling piece by piece as he looked at Damien one last time.

["Strength conquers kingdoms."]

["Wisdom conquers ages."]

["Never forget. The sharpest blade dulls."]

["The wisest mind keeps learning."]

Those were the last words he gave them. The cracks widened further, stone falling away in slow pieces as his enormous frame collapsed, not violently, more like something finally being allowed to rest after a very long watch.

Within moments, five meters of ancient guardian had become nothing more than a scattered pile of white stone.

The garden went quiet again. Then the pile shifted.

A soft golden light rose from underneath the fragments, and the broken rock slid apart on its own to make room for something climbing up out of the center. A chest, but not the kind either of them had seen in a dungeon before, carved from white crystal veined with gold, ancient runes shimmering faintly across its surface, the same symbol from the Guardian’s breastplate worked into the lock. It settled gently onto the flower-covered ground.
