The seaplane lifted off the following morning beneath a sky considerably more overcast than the endless, brilliant blue that had greeted their arrival, as though the island itself had chosen to mark their departure with quiet, sympathetic weather rather than false, cheerful sunshine.

Allen watched the island shrink steadily beneath them through the small cabin window, the pale sand and swaying palms gradually giving way to endless, glittering ocean, and felt the familiar weight of returning responsibility settle gradually back over his shoulders, gentler now than it had been before their departure, but unmistakably present regardless.

"You’re doing the quiet, thoughtful thing again," Vivian observed, settled beside him with her hand finding his.

"Just processing," Allen admitted. "Ten days of genuine peace, and now we’re heading straight back into S+ rank promotions, an Emperor crisis, a conspiracy that tried to kill the WHRIB Commander, and an entire town waiting to be transformed into something considerably more ambitious than anything we’ve previously attempted."

"When you list it out like that," Irene said from across the cabin, "it sounds considerably more overwhelming than it felt on the beach yesterday."

"It’s not actually more overwhelming," Myria said, reviewing what appeared to be an already-extensive planning document on her tablet, resurrected from whatever careful storage she’d kept it in during their communications blackout. "It simply feels that way because we’re no longer distracted by parasailing and jet ski races. The work remains exactly as manageable as we discussed."

"Somehow that’s both reassuring and not," Allen said, managing a tired, genuine smile despite the mounting weight of everything waiting for them.

Everlyn, seated near the window on Allen’s other side, reached over to squeeze his free hand. "We faced considerably more daunting odds before this trip," she said gently. "A Queen. A Prince. An ancient Emperor freed from centuries of sealing. I think we can manage rank promotions and civic planning without losing ourselves to the weight of it."

"You’re right," Allen said, drawing quiet comfort from her steady certainty. "I know you’re right. It’s just a lot, all landing at once."

"Then we handle it one piece at a time," Vivian said firmly. "The same way we’ve handled everything else. We don’t need to solve every problem simultaneously the moment we land."

The flight continued for several hours, the cabin’s earlier subdued mood gradually giving way to more practical, forward-looking conversation — Myria outlining preliminary considerations for Hegeville’s eventual transformation, Irene enthusiastically contributing ideas ranging from genuinely useful to delightfully impractical, Everlyn quietly sketching what she imagined the town’s eventual green spaces might look like, and Vivian offering careful, tactical assessment of how their growing public profile might complicate or assist the considerable undertaking.

By the time their connecting flight touched down at the airport nearest their guild headquarters, exhaustion from the long journey had settled comfortably over the entire group, though beneath the fatigue, Allen felt something steadier than the anxious uncertainty that had accompanied their departure from the island — a clear, considered readiness to face whatever waited for them, rather than simply bracing against it.

Reyes met them at the arrivals gate, her usual professional composure carrying visible, genuine warmth as she took in their considerably more relaxed, sun-touched appearances.

"You all look considerably better rested than the last time I saw you," she observed, a faint smile touching her lips. "I trust the trip served its purpose."

"Thoroughly," Allen confirmed. "What’s waiting for us?"

Reyes’s expression sobered slightly, professional focus reasserting itself. "Considerable developments, actually. The investigation into the summit attack has yielded significant results. And the Association has finalized your party’s S+ rank promotion, pending your formal acceptance."

Myria’s sharp eyes engaged immediately, exhaustion giving way to focused, professional attention. "What kind of developments regarding the investigation?"

"That," Reyes said, "requires a more secure conversation than an airport arrivals hall permits. I’ve arranged transport directly to headquarters. Vice Commander Farrow will brief you personally once you’ve had a chance to properly settle back in."

Allen absorbed the weight of the returning responsibility fully, exhaustion and renewed purpose mingling in equal measure as he glanced toward his wives — rested, strengthened, and unmistakably ready for whatever considerable challenges still waited for all of them.

"Then let’s get settled," he said, "and find out exactly what we’re walking back into."

They followed Reyes toward the waiting transport, the airport’s familiar, bustling chaos closing steadily around them once more, and Allen felt the last, lingering traces of the island’s borrowed peace settle quietly into memory, cherished and complete, making room for whatever considerable, extraordinary Chapter still waited to be written next.

The drive toward headquarters passed in comfortable, if increasingly focused, conversation, Myria already peppering Reyes with careful, strategic questions about the promotion ceremony’s logistics and the summit investigation’s preliminary findings, while Irene stared out the window with visible, restless energy, clearly eager to properly reconnect with the guild she’d missed across their considerable absence.

"How’s Cole settling back in?" she asked eventually, glancing toward Reyes.

"Recovering well, according to his last report," Reyes said. "Damon mentioned he’s already requesting clearance for light training, though the medical team’s holding firm on another two weeks of rest first."

"Sounds about right," Irene said, a fond, knowing smile touching her lips. "He never did know how to sit still properly."

Vivian, quieter than the others, kept her attention fixed on the passing city, her restored eyes drinking in familiar streets and buildings with the same grateful appreciation she still brought to every ordinary sight. "It’s strange," she said softly, mostly to herself. "Being back somewhere so familiar, after everything that changed on that island."

"Good strange, or unsettling strange?" Allen asked, catching the observation.

"Good strange," Vivian said, offering him a small, genuine smile. "I just keep noticing how much I actually see now, that I never properly appreciated before. Even something as mundane as city traffic feels worth paying attention to."

Allen squeezed her hand gently, understanding completely, and the transport continued its steady course toward headquarters, carrying five considerably rested, considerably strengthened people back into the heart of a world that had, in their brief absence, continued its own complicated, consequential motion without them.
