Chapter 496 - 493: Taking Action
Half an hour later, Lin Xinghai led the other members to the Military Department’s training grounds and met the highest-ranking military leader of the Dongwu Shelter, Qiu Wei.
Qiu Wei looked to be in his forties and was still quite well-built. However, upon seeing Lin Xinghai and his group, he dropped his usual sternness and approached them with a broad smile.
"Haha, I’m truly grateful to all of you for lending a hand. I believe with your help, this problem will surely be resolved smoothly," Qiu Wei said with a smile, extending his hand.
"General Qiu, you’re too kind. We will certainly do our utmost to eliminate all the Mutated Zombies." Lin Xinghai also reached out and shook his hand.
After some brief pleasantries, the two got straight to the point.
Qiu Wei had already instructed his staff office to draw up a plan. It detailed the general operational areas of the various Mutated Zombies and mapped out several extermination routes.
Of course, all of this was merely a suggestion. The final decision on how to proceed was entirely up to Lin Xinghai.
In addition, the military was also dispatching 28 people to assist.
It wasn’t that this was all the men they could spare. The issue was that the military had only acquired 50 sets of Exoskeleton Armor, and the Xinghai Squad would be using 22 of them, leaving the rest for the military’s own personnel.
"Of course, you can rest assured. I will follow the route behind you. The moment a battle breaks out, I guarantee I can arrive within a minute," Qiu Wei said.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to go with them. The problem was that the Mutated Zombies’ Perception Power was extremely keen. If he were to follow, it would only alert the zombies to the danger, causing them to flee beforehand.
As for the aura released by Lin Xinghai and his group, it was only that of the Blood Qi Realm. Furthermore, with only 50 people, it wouldn’t be enough to frighten the Mutated Zombies into fleeing ahead of time.
"Mm!" Lin Xinghai nodded. He didn’t say much else and immediately began trying on the Exoskeleton Armor.
The suit felt like a thick layer of armor worn over the body, but thanks to its power-assist system, walking around felt completely comfortable.
However, when Lin Xinghai started to run, he grew a little dissatisfied.
This was because the Exoskeleton Armor had a maximum Speed of 500 points. Once he surpassed that, the assist system became useless.
To exceed a Speed of 500, he had to rely on his own strength to propel the nearly 220-pound suit of armor forward.
’It wasn’t that I couldn’t do it, but it was exhausting.’
In the end, Lin Xinghai decided against wearing the cumbersome suit. Instead, he took out the set of Battle Armor that Wei Tianxing had given him and put it on.
Although the Battle Armor’s Attributes weren’t significantly better than the Exoskeleton Armor’s, it was light! Running in it barely hindered Lin Xinghai at all.
More importantly, the Exoskeleton Armor only boosted Physique, Power, and Speed.
But this type of Battle Armor, much like a Mecha, could also amplify Superpowers.
Qiu Wei, for his part, was surprised that Lin Xinghai could produce a suit of Battle Armor. While this type of armor didn’t offer a significant boost to combat power, the technology was still in the R&D phase. The fact that Lin Xinghai could acquire a set was proof enough that his background was anything but simple.
’After all, their Dongwu Shelter doesn’t even have a single suit of Battle Armor!’
What he hadn’t expected, however, was that just as Lin Xinghai finished putting on his Battle Armor, Little Fatty also took off his Exoskeleton Armor and donned a suit of Battle Armor of his own.
This made Qiu Wei begin to doubt himself. ’Am I that far behind on the news? Has this new equipment, Battle Armor, actually entered mass production already?’
Of course, this was just a minor interlude. After changing his gear, Lin Xinghai took out some other equipment for a quick inspection. With that, his side was ready.
Since Lin Xinghai and Little Fatty were wearing their own Battle Armor, two sets of Exoskeleton Armor were freed up. Consequently, Qiu Wei added two more soldiers to the team.
At this point, the military contingent consisted of 30 people, while the Xinghai Squad had 22, making a total of 52 people.
The team boarded a military vehicle together and left the Shelter through a different tunnel.
This tunnel connected directly to the Dongwu City subway lines.
...
Upon reaching the subway line, Qiu Wei looked at the group and said gravely, "This is as far as I’ll take you all. The rest is up to you. Stay in constant contact."
"Don’t worry!" Lin Xinghai smiled. He was the first to jump off the vehicle, carrying the micro-version of Mjolnir in one hand as he led the way into the pitch-black tunnel.
Watching Lin Xinghai’s group disappear into the distance, an officer standing nearby couldn’t help but ask, "General Qiu, are we really entrusting such a difficult mission entirely to them?"
"What other choice do we have? Do you have a better idea?" Qiu Wei retorted.
The officer who had spoken immediately fell silent. If he’d had a better solution, he would have proposed it during the meeting.
He only asked now because he felt a sense of unease.
Qiu Wei also watched silently as Lin Xinghai’s group departed. ’I feel uneasy too, but what can be done? Unless I could get a Divine Demon Realm expert to come here, this is the best option we have. But every Divine Demon Realm expert has the duty of guarding an Abyssal Passage. Even someone like Zuo Wenyao, who doesn’t have to stay inside an Abyssal Passage, is absolutely forbidden from moving more than 10 kilometers away from it, barring special circumstances. Because of this regulation, getting a Divine Demon Realm expert to come and help costs more than just money.’
Of course, Lin Xinghai had no idea that the upper echelons of the Dongwu Shelter were feeling anxious on his behalf.
With his current strength, a mission like this wasn’t difficult at all. He didn’t even plan on letting Qiu Wei and his men interfere. ’After all, our reward would be cut in half if they did.’
THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!
Their Combat Boots thumped rhythmically against the ground. Lin Xinghai walked nonchalantly at the very front, but Little Fatty and the others behind him were on high alert.
There was no lighting in the subway tunnel. They had to rely on the light emitted from their Combat Suits, which only illuminated their surroundings within a 10-meter radius.
Beyond that, everything was pitch-black.
Recalling what Lin Xinghai had previously told them about the Shadow Demons, they all felt a chill of fear.
What made them even more uneasy was that Lin Xinghai had left the planning for this operation entirely up to them, under the fine-sounding pretext of "honing their abilities."
"Boss, what do you think of this guard formation? How effective is it?" Little Fatty asked in a low voice, moving up beside Lin Xinghai.
Based on discussions between himself, Liu Miaomiao, Sun Tianbo, and Xie Shanyong, they had devised a plan to counter the elusive Shadow Demons: two people at the front and two at the rear of the formation would continuously use their Perception Power to scout.
Furthermore, to maintain uninterrupted surveillance, they would rotate every 10 minutes, ensuring everyone’s Perception Power remained at its peak.
But Little Fatty truly had no confidence that this method would be enough to detect the Shadow Demons in advance.
"You guys are the ones who cooked up the plan, so you should know better than I do how effective it is," Lin Xinghai said, amused.
