Chapter 2662: Gao Family Genealogy
"Do you have a way to start an extinction war?" Xiao Mei asked.
Xu Huo gave her an incredulous look, and Xiao Mei quickly added, "I was just curious, would anyone really start a war between countries just to clear an instance?"
"So many people would die, and it might not even achieve the goal."
"Who knows." Xu Huo didn’t continue the topic and was planning to head to the government office building again when the skinny player he had let go earlier suddenly appeared and said, "Someone wants to see you."
Xu Huo nodded and was about to leave when Beibao stopped him, "Who are you going to see?"
"A friend introduced an acquaintance," Xu Huo said. "You and Xiao Chun stay here, I will definitely fulfill what I promised."
Beibao tried to remain calm but couldn’t hide her regret. In fact, she had already regretted it when she was at the Wan Family because she had leaked secrets to an outsider. Although she thought that couldn’t really be considered secrets, she didn’t expect that someone could really find further clues from that information. Upon arriving at the Wan Family, she realized that Xu Huo’s presence was akin to a powerful time bomb, and the fourth son of the Wan Family might truly have inherited the Peng name.
How many people could be implicated by one thread? She didn’t understand the significance of the Gao legacy, but when the people implicated by this thread stood in front of her one by one, she realized that a small oversight could result in these people having no place to be buried!
Adventuring to find Lian Qingkong was even more so; she had previously tried to contact Lian Qingkong wanting to do something for Yu Country, and make the survival environment for the Gao descendants better. She even felt anger at Lian Qingkong’s indifference, but when she really arrived here, she was almost unable to sit still, especially hearing Xu Huo and Xiao Mei talk about an extinction war... That was a consequence she had never anticipated, to think that players from the Outer Zone would suggest it...
Kidnapping hostages to threaten the government and starting a war between the country and Outer Zone players had already become reality, if extinction could achieve the purpose, those Outer Zone players would definitely do it!
Watching the man walking away from her, Beibao started to tremble all over, involuntarily stepping forward while clutching her prop...
"Snap!" A hand was placed on her shoulder from behind, and the face of the Girl in the painting appeared beside her, staring at her unblinkingly.
Beibao tried to say something with a tug at her lips, but Xiao Mei casually said next to her, "Put away the prop, trying to assassinate with a Super Evolver, you’re still too green. When you move your eyeball, others know where it turns, ignoring you is giving you a chance to live, don’t be ungrateful."
Xu Huo and the skinny player had already left, and Beibao let her tense hands fall, not knowing if she was relieved or regretful.
Xiao Mei glanced at her, taking the communicator as she was about to walk out, not expecting the Girl in the painting to block her too.
"What, are you going to follow me to the bathroom?"
The Girl in the painting raised the communicator, "He told you not to leave."
"What if I just want to go?" Xiao Mei sneered.
The communicator remained unmoved in front of her.
After a few seconds of confrontation, Xiao Mei sat back down, put her feet on the coffee table, and chuckled, "I want to see how he clears the instance!"
Xu Huo followed the skinny player to the residential area of Capital City, where an elderly man in a wheelchair was waiting for him in a small courtyard. He seemed excessively old; his body looked fairly fit, but the skin on his face and the back of his hands was loose and full of wrinkles, with an almost undeniable fragility of life being exhausted.
"Who sent you to find the God of the Night?" the old man motioned for him to sit.
This person might not be the one Gao Ming had mentioned, but Xu Huo still took out the note Gao Ming had written.
The old man’s hand trembled slightly as he took it, glanced at it, and then chuckled, "Gao Ming is not so bright. Back then, his medical skills were not that good, but he remembered my mockery for twenty years."
"Is he doing well?"
"Fairly free," Xu Huo replied, "and he has some companions."
The old man nodded, very gratified, "I didn’t expect him to still remember me."
He didn’t ask for more details, instead sitting quietly for a while as if reminiscing. After a moment, he said to Xu Huo, "Thank you for bringing news. If there’s anything you need my help with, just ask."
"I want to clear the ’Illusory Spark’ instance," Xu Huo said bluntly.
The old man laughed and shook his head, "I can’t help you with that. I can’t locate the National Treasure either."
Xu Huo also smiled, not changing his request, but asking an entirely unrelated question, "Why do you call yourself ’God of the Night’?"
The old man laughed heartily, "In my youth, I was so full of myself, thinking I could do anything, now it’s just a joke."
After the laughter, his gaze moved from the lush trees in the courtyard to Xu Huo’s face, "Being young is nice, youth is full of endless possibilities."
"Choices are what offer endless possibilities," Xu Huo remarked, "Not just being young."
"You’re right too," the old man nodded, "You are young, with many choices. Any more questions? My time is limited."
"Does the Yu Country Government have any special arrangements for the descendants of the two surnames?" Xu Huo asked.
"Special arrangements?" The old man’s chest emitted a low chuckle, "What’s the difference between them and others in Yu Country?"
Xu Huo nodded slightly, "I understand."
After a pause, he asked, "When Gao Hui escaped back then, he might have taken with him a register of the descendants of the two surnames, does the Yu Country Government have any related information?"
The old man was a bit surprised, staring at him for two seconds before laughing softly.
This differs greatly from the rumored "National Treasure," what Gao Hui took might be national wealth or some token used to command hidden forces. But whether it’s wealth or a token, even having it wouldn’t really save everything. As for the supposed hidden forces... Yu Country has been in conflict for so long, what real hidden families could there be, without revealing their power to defend themselves, they’d just be devoured.
Yu Country’s war-torn, with scattered individuals, so many deaths, the local government can’t even keep track of residences. Who would dare imagine that a surname from centuries ago could be passed down and recorded in a register?
He wasn’t probing, so he was certain this register is the so-called "National Treasure."
After a long while, the old man placed an old book with a blank cover on the table, "This is as far as I can help you, take it and go."
Xu Huo took the book and walked out of the courtyard. He originally speculated this might record related clues, but opening it, he unexpectedly saw the words "Chengfeng Gao Clan Tree" right at the beginning.
He turned back sharply to look into the courtyard, but the old man was already gone. Looking again at the names recorded in this genealogy, they had already ended over two hundred years ago—this was an incomplete Gao Family genealogy.
