King of Hollywood

Chapter XVII Right to Adaptation

Venice is naturally called the Water City because it is situated on the water, full of water alleys the size of the city, Venetian steeple boats called gondolas and more than 400 bridges make up a unique landscape that attracts tourists from all over the world.

The festival takes place on the slender island of Lido, in the southeast of TransVenice, and is a well-known resort in the United States of America, Miami and Hawaii, in Rivera, France. With both private beaches and public baths, casinos, restaurants, nightclubs, theatres and other entertainment facilities, it's perfect for a film festival.

On August 27, Adrian arrived in Venice with his team a day ahead of schedule. It was a team, actually just himself, Catherine, Dennis and two assistants, and LaVerne flew in from the United States a week ago to take responsibility for other things, such as filing entries.

Adrian had some concerns, because of the tight deadline and the fact that the first edition of the clip did not achieve the best results in his mind, but it passed smoothly under LaVerne's operation, and he had to say that he was very capable. Imagine, seven years ago, Paramount's CEO, but now Dinesh's CEO, Michael? Eisner, LaVerne must not be underestimated as one of the powerful people who can bring Dinesh to this point today. That's why Adrian eventually acquired Bosworth Films when he clearly had a cheaper and better option.

Upon arrival at the hotel, Adrian took a short break and found LaVerne to discuss it. Although he has been following his film company, Los Angeles and London, after all, are across the Atlantic and the American continents, and now heavy mobile phones do not support global communications. It is too much trouble to contact them either over cable or over satellite phones. Besides, after the shoot, most of his energy went to the later stages, while a small part went to Catherine, so it was very necessary to take this opportunity to talk face-to-face and ask the details.

“Eddie from the planning department? Blake, Clarice from the editorial department?" After a few chills, Adrian came to the point, "I assured them that I would not fire any of my employees for six months, but I also said that they would be visited during this period. Frankly, I'm not satisfied with your performance. ”

“I'm sure there's been some misunderstanding in the middle of this," LaVerne said after going through some of Adrianti's information, "Eddie and Clarice are not the best employees, but they're also due diligence. ”

“But mistakes are always true, right?” Adrian laughed and raised his hand before LaVerne spoke, "Well, LaVerne, I was just making my point and... Since I entrust the company to you during this time, I will certainly trust you and respect your opinions. ”

“Thank you, Mr. Corwell.” LaVerne said after a few seconds of silence.

“Just call me Ed - talk about the festival now.” Adrian changed the subject.

“Okay, Ed, the organizing committee has accepted Two Big Smoke Guns in the name of an independent film.” LaVerne said he had delivered the accompanying documents to Adrian.

“Good, so we can save some money.” Adrian looked over and nodded.

The key to abandoning the name of a film company to participate in a film festival as an independent film is the legal requirement in the United States that film producers should not combine the production and distribution of the same film. That is, if a movie is produced by a movie company and wants to be released, it has to be handed over to another movie company, which extends from antitrust powers.

For groups in Hollywood that have several movie companies, the law is nothing more than a piece of paper, and releases are handed over from the left hand to the right - you know, even if the anti-monopoly law expressly prohibits movie companies from owning exhibits, these big groups still think of ways to drill loopholes in the law, indirectly controlling exhibits - and small and medium-sized movie companies have to comply with the law.

Actually, it's nothing. Hollywood has a perfect hairstyle channel. You don't have to worry about someone getting in the way, but Adrian doesn't want to waste that distribution fee. Business starts, all the money should be spent on the blade, so why not go to the festival in the name of an independent film and hand it over to your own film company for distribution? Anyway, he did it all the way from investing to producing -- okay, with the help of the company, but that's okay, isn't it?

“Have you seen the specimen? What do you think?” Adrian asked at this point, seeing LaVerne hesitate to add: “It's okay, I just want to hear your opinion. ”

“Well… it's interesting to say, but I'm not sure how many people would like this British style cut film, and it's basically impossible to be below level r, which can have a huge impact on the number of viewers.” LaVerne said in discretion.

Adrian wanted to say a few words, but after thinking about it, he abandoned the idea, and LaVerne was only analyzing it from the perspective of the U.S. market, so he couldn't be wrong.

“How was the show scheduled?” Adrian asked again.

“31, Fred Theatre.” LaVerne replied briefly.

“So wait till after the show," Adrian laughed, shifting the subject again, "what about the editing rights to those novels? Seems like you've had some trouble before? ”

“Stephen? Mr. King has agreed to sell us the right to adapt the novel, and may have signed it by now; Michael? Mr. Clayton's novel is still under negotiation, and judging by the circumstances, the chances are still high; the main problem is Winston? On Mr. Groom, he insisted on the need to participate in the adaptation of the script.” LaVerne explained.

Adrian's eyebrows frowned and thought for a long time before he opened his mouth: “It would be better if Clayton's novel was completely adapted as soon as possible, and if necessary he could make some more concessions, or even get him involved in the adaptation - Groom can't... doesn't he mean anything to loosen up? ”

“Yes, Mr. Groom said it was a necessary condition.” LaVerne sighed.

Adrian silenced for a few seconds: “I can understand what he thinks, a piece is like a child of his own, and no one wants to be dressed as a child at will, but the problem is… his piece is a political sarcasm novel that I want to convert into an inspirational film. If he is involved in the adaptation, we will inevitably not have a conflict - and that is why I stress that this book must be fully adapted. ”

What a troublesome guy. Paramount would have done that. Probably been forced to do the same? He squeezed his finger and thought about it before saying: "So, Ralph, you can agree to this condition, but at the same time prepare a special contract to guarantee that we can kick him out of the production alone in the first place, when there is conflict at the time of adaptation and there is no reconciliation. ”

LaVerne raised her eyebrows unexpectedly, but nodded and didn't say much. The conversation ended and Adrian went back to his room to rest.

The next day, the festival officially opened in front of numerous journalists' cameras and cameras, the opening of which was a work in mainland Italy. After walking through a red carpet, which was not a red carpet, and listening to the host's chairman at the opening ceremony, Adrian took Catherine along the streets and alleys of Venice.

He has little interest in communicating with European directors, his goals are not here, and he's just a new director. Of course, there are still some heavyweight characters from the American mainland, Martin? Scocist came to the festival with his new book, The Good Guy, who was originally Italian-American and naturally had a unique love for the Venetian Film Festival. Even his film themes are often the identity of Italian-Americans, sin and redemption in the Catholic sense, and violence in American society - probably one of the reasons Oscar hasn't left him in over a decade.

Now that Scorsese is here, Robert has been working closely with him since the '80s and is one of the stars of the Good Guy? Naturally, De Niro will not lag behind. Adrian had no feelings for Scorsese, but he loved De Niro's performance. As I said, he's just a new director now, and even if he met at most, it wouldn't be too salty to talk, so why did he have to make this noise?

Plus the whole movie thing had been handed over to LaVerne, and the holiday was supposed to be part of the festival, so he felt comfortable playing in Venice with Catherine.

The Governor's Palace, Sigh Bridge, Palazzo Rezonico, St. Mark's Square and St. Mark's Church are naturally the places to visit. One of the things that must be done is to sit in Gondola and cross the waterways across the spider web, and the two of them even went to the library where the view of Trooper 3 was taken. In three days, they walked half of Venice.

“Venice is so beautiful, I love this place!” Catherine couldn't help but praise herself for coming out of the alley and looking at the distant, fluctuating gulls above Gondola.

“If you like, we'll take the time to travel once a year in the future.” Adrian smiled around her waist.

Catherine did not speak and kissed him in the mouth with a shallow smile, glancing at Adrian halfway around his neck. Around Adrian, she hugged Catherine and kissed her deeply in her arms, enthusiastically entwined by the two of them in total disregard of the surrounding scenery, no different from those who loved her.

In his eyes, the boatman who sat on the last paddle sang a song, even though he spoke Italian, but the lovely smell sang extraordinarily true. Perhaps because of this love song, the two kissing became more enthusiastic.

(Finally, I really don't know where this chapter is sensitive... the next chapter is finally going to be pushed...)
