It stopped working when I pulled the flamethrower out of the boss room to show it off. However, when I put it back inside the boss room again, it started to activate.

An additional confirmation experiment showed that the trap apparently only activates on the same floor as the one installed.

Boss, the only reason I can't use it anymore is because the boss room was splitting the floor so that I could 'install' the monster in an emergency.

Perhaps the trap is only installation-type. Suppose you assume to use a trap as a riddle in the room, so you can travel as far as the floor?
