Chapter 47: Bloody Flowers
Adam hadn’t been asleep the night of the apocalypse. He had been awake, preparing for the next day.
There had sat over his living room table a basket of goods he had been gathering, filled with a collection of fruits, natural dried fruit sweets, and a few pastries, glazed with flowers.
That had been then. And now, that same basket’s contents had been strewn across the ground of his kitchen, petals broken from the flowers, mourning over the ground.
Adam rushed through the back room, into a guest room to the other end of his apartment. A fingerprint and facial recognition mechanism had been built into the side wall of it that gradually unlocked the reinforced door.
No one had lived there in all the years since he had been granted this apartment.
The door groaned open, and he hurried himself inside. Within it, he was immediately brought to the sight of a series of guns hanging over the wall. There were pistols mainly, and even with the fact that there had been a room dedicated to this, there had not been too many of them in the room. The place was instead more like a workshop.
Adam maintained people’s guns for them after all, and hence the dedication of a room to them.
He drove through the room, leaving largely behind the tools that had been there, and he went directly for the weapons on the rack. Immediately, he took already filled magazines of bullets.
Then he took along a hip holster, putting the pistol that he had already carried with him here into one of the portions, and then he secured himself with a second pistol within the second holster.
Thereafter, he took the only rifle that had been there, a semi-automatic one, and with it, its magazines as well. He turned and he went for the table, where there had been a combat vest.
’I hope this one is more reasonable than the last guy. I really don’t want to have to...’
Adam briefly glanced over to the axe on the wall, and took it with himself. He could not leave it under any circumstances. Not with how things were working out to be in the world now, not after he felt the sensation of those essences going into his body.
Once he had finished, he immediately headed for the door, and he had taken one of the snake cameras with him.
To reach right before the shotgun that he had set up by the door, he had to pass by the kitchen, where his attention had been briefly drawn by the mess that he had made.
His lips pursed tighter and he tore his attention back to the door.
Adam first of all disabled his trap, lowering the shotgun and he took it along him where he rested it against the wall. Then, he used the snake camera and slid it down the floor.
The tablet connected to it rested in his palm and flickered on, showing the sight of the hallway beyond his door.
In his state, the last thing that he could afford was rashness. Thus, he waited, and watched.
With the commotion that had been caused, there would be zombies coming to this floor from the floors below.
Whoever had broken into the Jameson’s rooms should have been coming there to spend the night so there was no reason for him to be in a hurry, he could likely wait through at least an hour or two of the night.
A time later, through his camera he watched as zombies trudged up from the staircases from both ends. The sounds had died a long time ago, and yet still they drew closer to the rooms.
Adam pulled the camera back into his room and he dropped the tablet down on the ground beside him and he pulled one of the pistols from his hip.
He creaked his door open slightly, and it opened to the stretch of hall leading away from the Jameson’s apartment.
There were seven zombies that had come up from the direction that he was facing.
He adjusted his wheelchair, and he gripped the handle tighter, settling his aim on the swaying, blood-hungering creature.
The crack of the gun’s fire resounded, and it cocked back. One of the zombie’s head burst blood backwards and blood sprayed. Then a second crack, and the second zombie’s head was shot through.
The zombies, as he shot them, had turned towards heading for him, and likely those that had been heading towards the Jameson’s apartment had been as well, and more than likely, more from below.
A series of shots resounded and there had only been one left when his pistol ran out of bullets.
The magazine had been swiftly freed from its well and a replacement chambered within only a few seconds when the gun was cocked again.
Adam’s lips pursed at the sound that he heard from the other end. They had drawn very close by now.
The pistol clattered to the floor, and his hand had fallen towards the shotgun. His other hand smashed the door wider open and the impact against a body resounded.
Within the next second the second and third zombie from the other end appeared. The shotgun had raised, and the large blast of its fire echoed through the floor. Its power rolled him back, his brows furrowed and his teeth clenched having braced for the recoil.
Two of the zombies’ heads had been blasted through, and soon the second shot resounded and one of the next three had been shot through the head while two of the others had only been partially shot through on the side of their heads.
The shotgun fell and he pulled the pistol from his hip, the sound of the pistols firing filled the floor and the two others that had only been staggered were killed.
Adam didn’t hear any more directly near him, however he could hear them down the hall, and thus, he immediately began reloading the pistol in his hands.
He holstered it, and he drove himself ahead, picking up his other pistol.
