Chapter 185: The Man Who Wants Nothing
He took the seat across from her, and the audience got down to its real business, which turned out to be his father’s to run.
For a while it was patriarch’s work, and Xuan let it be. Lin Zhen and the princess talked in the measured, circling way of two people who already knew where the road led and were enjoying the walk to it. The coming war waited unnamed in the room like a third guest.
The princess did not dress it up for long.
"I will be plain, Patriarch, since I think you prefer it." She set her cup down. "There are four of us who might take the throne when my father lets go of it. And when it happens, every sword in the empire gets asked whose hand it swings for. I would rather have Skyedge’s answer decided before that question is shouted instead of asked politely."
Lin Zhen did not keep her waiting. "Skyedge stands with the Third Princess." He spent the words plainly, a patriarch putting his weight where he meant it. "We decided as much before you ever climbed our mountain. Yuncheng, the mines, the bond with Frostmoon, all of it was done with the eastern sea in mind. You have our swords the day the bell rings."
It was Qingyue who spoke next, and the room shifted to make room for her the way it always did, a young woman in Frostmoon blue with a voice like cold water over stone.
"And Frostmoon stands with Skyedge, which means Frostmoon stands with you." The princess turned to her with open interest, and Qingyue met it without a flicker. "My father sent me to this mountain himself. He blessed my betrothal himself. He chose his side in his own hall long before today, and it is yours. I am not handing you a guess about what Frostmoon Ridge will do, Your Highness. I am telling you what my father has already done."
The princess weighed her, and liked what she found. "You have no idea how rare that is. To be handed a certainty instead of a maybe. Most people sell me a promise they mean to break by spring. You gave me your father’s decision, and I believe it." A wry curve of the mouth. "Frostmoon raised you well. I will remember it when I am somewhere I can remember things generously."
Through all of it Xuan mostly watched, and Mira, for once, mostly did not talk.
’You have gone quiet,’ he told her. ’Which from you is basically shouting.’
[ Mhm. Just watching. ] She sounded thoughtful. [ Here’s the thing, though. I have been running the four of them since we walked in, and, yeah. She’s the pick. Genuinely. ]
’Go on.’
[ Okay, so. The eldest can’t cultivate his way out of a wet paper bag. The second is all teeth and armies, would run the empire like a boot on a throat. And the fourth, the drunk one everybody laughs at? ] A short pause. [ I do not have that one figured out yet, and I hate that, so leave him in the "watch this" pile. Which leaves her. Golden Core, actually good at it, actually liked, clever enough to take a whole room with tea instead of a knife. Out of a bad four, she is the one you would want holding the empire. Yup. Backing her is not the wrong call. ]
Then the princess set the patriarchs’ business down and turned the full warmth of her attention on Xuan, which he had been dreading since he took the chair.
"And that leaves you, Master Lin." She considered him with those deceptively soft eyes. "I do not flatter people, it wastes both our time, so take this exactly as I say it. You are nineteen. You won Yuncheng, broke a Frostmoon prodigy in a courtyard, clawed two mountains back from a sect three times your size, and walked out of a cave just now with a presence that tightened my own guards’ hands on their spears. Men like you arrive twice in a generation." A small smile. "So here is what I truly climbed this mountain to say. When I take the throne, I would like you beside it. Not as a soldier. As one of the few people in an empire of liars whose back I could turn on and sleep. Name the position, and it is yours."
The room went quiet, everyone waiting to see whether the young man was clever enough to pick it up.
’She just offered me a blank seat next to a throne,’ Xuan thought.
[ Yeah. She did. ] Mira, low. [ That is a genuinely gigantic thing to be handed. Kingmakers have been buried for less. ] A beat. [ So. Are you going to be smart, or are you going to be you? ]
’You already know.’
[ Mhm. Figured. ]
He set his cup down and chose the words the way she had taught him, carefully, honestly, and not all of them at once.
"Your Highness, I will not pretend that was not the most generous thing anyone has said to my face, and I am grateful. Genuinely. That you would think so highly of a man you have known for one conversation tells me the province has not been exaggerating about you, either. But let me be as plain as you were. That is not a chair I want. A title, a seat at court, a life spent holding up someone else’s crown, it is a good life, and the wrong one for me. I would only disappoint you in it."
His father went carefully still beside him. Xuan pressed on before anyone could reach in and smooth it over.
"What I can give you is better anyway. Skyedge is yours, because my father gave his word, and his word is the sect’s. Where the sect goes, I go. If standing in front of your brothers is what he wants, and what keeps this family and these two sects breathing, you will not find me anywhere but at the front of it. You have my sword in the war, Your Highness. You just will not have me at court after it." A dry flicker crossed his mouth. "I would be a disaster at court anyway. I would tell everyone the truth, and you would have to have me quietly killed inside a month."
The princess looked at him a while, and the easy, warm mask did a thing he had not caught it doing yet. It thought. Openly. A keen mind turning over a young man who had waved off a throne’s favor like a second bowl of rice.
She smiled, and this one reached a place the earlier ones had not.
"Do you know, in all my years watching people fight to sit where you just refused to sit, you are the first to turn me down, make me believe it, and leave me liking him more for it. I came wanting your loyalty. Now I find I want your honesty, which is far harder to keep alive near a throne." Her eyes stayed on him, warm and unreadable. "I will take the sword, and the alliance, and your father’s word, gladly. But I am not finished with you, Master Lin. A man who wants nothing from me is the one man I cannot afford to stop watching."
[ Well. ] Mira landed somewhere between impressed and alarmed. [ You turned down a throne and somehow made a Golden Core princess more interested in you, not less. ]
[ I honestly cannot tell if that was the smartest thing you have ever done or the opening move of a very long headache. Yeah. Let us go with both. ]
