He closed the window and folded back down.

’All right, shopkeeper. Show me the dangerous one.’

[ With pleasure. But first, a word from your responsible financial advisor, who is also me, and who is briefly not enjoying herself.] The shopkeeper polish dropped away entirely. [ What I’m about to show you is a full tier above everything else you own. It is not a duelling technique. It will not help you win a fight against one man. It exists for exactly one purpose, and that purpose is the thing you are about to walk into. A war. Understand that before you look at the price and faint.]

’Show me.’

The listing bloomed, and even the light it cast felt heavier than the last.

[ DRAGON DESCENDS THE MOUNTAIN ]

[ Rank: Heaven, low. Nascent Soul-tier battlefield sword art. ]

[ Function: A single overhead descending cut releases the full of the wielder’s sword-intent as a manifested dragon of force that runs the length of the strike, tearing through everything along its path. Not a cut against one man. A cut against a line. ]

[ Scale: the manifestation carries dozens of paces forward and wide. Ranks, formations, and shielded clusters are cut as one. ]

[ Synergy — Seven Dragon Sword Art: this art is the true apex the seven forms only gesture toward. Your Heart of the Dragon is its shadow. Mastery of the seven deepens the manifestation. ]

[ WARNING — Realm strain: at Foundation Establishment, your body cannot yet channel a Heaven-rank release freely. Each casting drains you to the floor and cannot be repeated without rest. Usable perhaps once in a battle at your current realm. Grows with you. ]

[ Cost: 27,000 Origin Points. ]

Xuan read the warning line twice, and the price once, and did the arithmetic he was very good at.

’Twenty-seven thousand. That’s almost all of it. And I can only fire it once before it empties me.’

[ Once, ] Mira confirmed, grave now, the merchant entirely gone. [ At your realm, it’s a single, catastrophic swing, and you’re left a man holding a very heavy sword with nothing in the tank. Which is why it’s not a toy and never will be. It’s the thing you keep in your back pocket for the one moment in a battle where a whole enemy line has to stop existing, right now, or you lose. You spend it once, on the right heartbeat, and it redraws a battlefield. After that you’d better have people around you to carry the fight while you catch your breath.]

’And it grows. As I climb, the drain eases.’

[ As you climb, what empties you today becomes something you can throw twice, after that freely, in the end like breathing. This isn’t a technique you buy for the man you are. It’s one you buy for the man you’re going to be, and it happens to be devastating in the meantime.] A pause. [ But I won’t pretend the cost is small. Buy this and you walk in to meet your princess with your Origin Points scraped down to the bone. No safety net. No emergency purchase if something goes sideways in that room. You’d be betting the whole purse that raw strength serves you better than a reserve of coin.]

Xuan turned it over, and found the decision had already made itself somewhere back on that frozen sparring ground.

’She summoned me to a war. Not a negotiation, not a duel, a war. If I’m walking into that, I walk in able to break a battlefield, not clutching a purse I might spend on something smaller later.’ He exhaled. ’Besides. I’ve never once won by playing it safe. I win by being the thing nobody accounted for.’

[ Spoken like a man about to be gloriously broke.] Warmth threaded back under the words, the shopkeeper and the friend both at once. [ Last chance to flinch, Xuan. Twenty-seven thousand. It clears you out.]

’Buy it.’

[ Sold. And gods help whatever the Second Prince points at you.]

The panel flared, the balance gutted itself down to a lonely remainder, and the technique came home.

This one didn’t fill him as the first had. It landed in him like a weight dropped into deep water, vast and slow and sinking to somewhere below where his other techniques lived. He understood it completely in the same instant, the descending cut, the gathering of every scrap of intent he owned into a single downward line, the release, the form of the dragon that would run screaming down the length of the strike, and beneath the knowledge, underneath it, he felt the sheer size of the thing and understood without testing why it would flatten him to swing it. It was too big for the body he had. For now.

ORIGIN POINTS: 1,180

’One thousand one hundred and eighty,’ he read, and laughed under his breath. ’From a fortune to bus fare in a single morning.’

[ You spent it well, ] Mira said. [ A blade that ignores armor, a ranged strike that kills a man who thinks he’s safe, and a battlefield-ender in your back pocket for the day it all goes wrong. That’s not a shopping trip, Xuan. That’s you walking into a war rebuilt from the ground up, and doing it in one sunrise.] The ledger snapped shut. [ You are, officially, the best-armed broke man in the province. I’ve never been prouder or more concerned.]

’So have I.’ He slid Marrow Dragon home, the awakened steel seating with its new, deeper note, and stood in the grey light feeling the two techniques settle into their places alongside the old ones, the whole architecture of what he could do rearranged in the space of a morning. Foundation body. A blade that cheated. A duel-breaker and a battle-ender. He’d walked to that sparring ground a man with a good sword and a clever trick, and he’d come away rebuilt.

He’d barely finished the thought when a knock came at the door, fast and light, and Qingyue’s voice on the other side of it, pitched low and stripped of the warmth she’d left him with an hour ago.

"Xuan. Get dressed and come down." A beat. "The Princess didn’t wait for the new moon. Her banner just came through the city gates below, and she’s asking for you by name. She’s here."
