They were expected.

That much was plain before they reached the gate. No line of supplicant merchants here, or some papers nor any formation sweeping them for lies, only two rows of disciples in Heavenly Sword grey standing along the white stone bridge that leapt the gorge to the first tier. And at their head, not sent down by a steward but planted there in the wind himself, stood Yan Wuji.

Xuan hadn’t looked for that. A great sect did not spend its golden son to greet a guest at the door; it sent someone whose hours were cheap. Yan Wuji standing here in person was a statement, and a warm one.

He had changed. The last time Xuan laid eyes on him, he’d been flat on his back in the Yuncheng dust with his pride in fragments. Now he stood loose and straight, and the qi banked around him ran denser, deeper, ringing with a resonance Xuan knew from the wrong side of a locked door. Foundation Establishment.

The boy had broken through.

"Lin Xuan." Yan Wuji came forward and, to Xuan’s mild surprise, bowed — not the shallow tilt equals traded, but the deep bow of a man paying a debt. "You came. I half expected a courteous refusal and a crate of excuses."

"I don’t send crates. I come myself, or I insult a man twice." Xuan swung down from the saddle. "You look well. Foundation suits you."

Something kindled in Yan Wuji’s face, the private glow of a man who’d waited three months for someone worth showing. "You felt it."

"You’re throwing it off like a lit stove. Hard to miss."

Yan Wuji’s gaze drifted past him, and his composure caught — the first honest surprise Xuan had gotten out of him. "Young Mistress Su." He bowed again, deeper, flustered as only a proud man gets when a scene refuses to go as rehearsed. "Forgive me. I hadn’t heard you would be traveling with him."

"Few people had." Qingyue dismounted with the wintered calm she kept for strangers. "It’s recent."

"So the rumour reached even us, up here." He recovered, and the smile that surfaced was warmer than Xuan had braced for, real gladness beneath the manners. "Frostmoon and Skyedge, a betrothal blessed on both peaks. My congratulations, to you both. Sincerely." A beat, and the old competitor surfaced under it. "Though I’ll own it stings a little. I lose to the man, and he turns around and wins the Young Mistress of Frostmoon as well. Some people simply take the whole table."

"I do try," Xuan said.

Yan Wuji turned to lead them up, the disciples folding in behind. "You’ve taken longer than I looked for, I’ll say that much. The invitation went out well over few weeks. I’d started to wonder whether bandits had eaten you, or whether you’d thought better of me."

"Neither. There was a city on the road." Xuan let a thread of dryness through. "Something came up. It took a fortnight to put down."

Yan Wuji glanced back, amused, plainly picturing nothing worse than a tavern brawl. "That much time? What could one mortal town possibly throw at the man who broke me, an overpriced innkeeper?"

"Something like that." He let it lie, and behind his eyes Mira gave a delighted little cough.

[ ’Something came up,’ ] she echoed. [ You swallowed the town whole. Modesty is a marvellous new colour on you. ]

They climbed as they spoke, and the Pavilion opened around them tier by tier: halls of white jade, sword-racks taller than houses, the far ring of a thousand blades drilling somewhere in the cloud above. Yan Wuji wore his new realm out in the open, and Xuan gave him the room to do it, because a proud man handed space to boast tells you a great deal about himself.

"Some months already since Yuncheng," Yan Wuji said, "and I’ve turned that fight over most days since. It taught me something. I went home, I trained like the loss was a wound that wouldn’t close, and I crossed into Foundation on the winter solstice." He said it lightly, and watched Xuan sidelong to see it land. "And the man who beat me is, forgive me, yet to reach it. Which does make me wonder what you’ll become once you catch up."

There it was, the question wrapped up as a compliment. And Xuan, who’d spent the whole climb deciding how much to show, chose to show exactly enough.

"Ninth stage. Peak." He named it like another man mentions the weather. "My hand has been flat against the door of Foundation for some time now. I’ve only had reasons not to open it yet." He held Yan Wuji’s eye. "When I do, you and I are going to have a great deal to talk about."

Yan Wuji’s smile stalled for a heartbeat while he recalculated. Peak ninth stage at Xuan’s age, poised on the threshold with the door already unlocked, was not the standing of a man lagging behind. It was the standing of one about to arrive very fast, and both of them knew it.

Yan Wuji let it go with good grace, though Xuan could see him filing it away.

The courtesies had run their length, and Xuan set his real weight down. Whatever trade he’d once meant to beg these people for, he’d already sewn shut in a river city a fortnight behind him. Only one question was left that counted.

"Since we’re being honest, Wuji, I didn’t ride two weeks off my road just to watch you flex a fresh realm, flattering as the view is." He kept it easy. "Your sect is one of the three great powers of the East. And the East is about to have to pick a side, whether it wants to or not." He let the words hang. "So before your elders and I sit down to be exquisitely polite at one another, tell me plainly. Where does the Heavenly Sword Pavilion stand, when the war comes?"

Friend, enemy, or the worst of the three, undecided, and everything Skyedge did next turned on the answer.

Yan Wuji’s easy warmth cooled a single degree, not into hostility but into something careful, the face of a man who’s just heard a guest name the one subject the whole mountain has been holding its breath over.

"Ah," he said, quiet now. "So you felt that too."

He stopped on the bridge, the white halls climbing all around them, and for the first time since the gate his voice slipped out of courtesy into something that ran closer to a warning.

"You should know, before you set another foot up this mountain, that you are not the only one who came here to ask that. And you are very far from the only side already hunting for our answer."
