Cang Yuwen crossed thirty feet of courtyard in a single step and nearly ended it right there.

Xuan didn’t see him move. He saw Xinhua’s blade come up, heard the crash of the curved sword meeting hers, and felt the shockwave punch him backward into a pillar hard enough to crack the stone behind his shoulders. When his vision cleared, the two of them were locked blade to blade in the middle of the yard, and the frost around Xinhua’s feet was boiling away into steam.

’What is that on his sword?’

[ Searing qi, corrosive variant, ] Mira said, clipped. [ It eats cold. Her ice melts on contact, which is why he’s smiling. He picked his art to beat hers, or he trained it after the Autumn Court specifically for the day he’d meet her. Either way she can’t win the exchange she’s built for. ]

’Then he’s mine.’

[ He is nine tenths hers and one tenth yours, and the one tenth is the part that kills him. Get in. Off his blind side, low, and do not let him see you as anything but a distraction until you want him to. ]

Xuan moved.

Cloud Step put him at Cang’s flank, and Piercing Dragon drove Marrow Dragon at the seam under the general’s ribs where his guard was busy holding a princess at bay. Cang didn’t even turn. His off hand came around and a wall of that hissing qi caught the thrust a hand’s width from his side, and the impact rang up Xuan’s arms into his teeth.

But the blue-green edge sank in.

Not far. Two inches, maybe three. Cang’s expression flickered for the first time all night, a man feeling something touch skin that had not been touched in years, and he threw Xuan across the courtyard with a backhand sweep of qi that would have folded a lesser body in half.

Xuan rolled out of it, came up bleeding from the nose, and grinned into the dark.

’It cut. His defence should have stopped that dead and it cut.’

[ Armorcleave. ] Mira’s voice had gone bright and vicious. [ Dragonvein shears defensive qi instead of bouncing off it. His whole style is built on being untouchable, Xuan, and he doesn’t know yet that he isn’t. Neither does she. Tell her. ]

"Xinhua!" He was already moving again. "His guard doesn’t hold against my edge! Stop trying to break it and pin him — I’ll do the cutting!"

She didn’t waste breath asking how. She simply changed everything.

Frostbreath ran out from her boots in a hard six-pointed bloom, and where her ice had been melting she stopped fighting the heat and started fighting the ground, freezing the flagstones under Cang’s feet, the air in his lungs, the moisture off his own blade. She wasn’t trying to cut him anymore. She was making the world around him slow, and every technique she threw shackled him another half-beat, and half-beats were all Xuan needed.

They found their rhythm inside four exchanges, and it was the best thing Xuan had felt since the day he woke up in this world.

She held. He struck. Frost locked Cang’s back foot and Xuan’s Twin Dragon Strike opened his forearm. Ice welded the general’s off hand to his own hilt for half a breath and Coiling Dragon wound the curved blade out of line and Marrow Dragon drew a line of red across his ribs that his armour of qi should have swallowed whole. Cang roared, and the searing wave he loosed cracked the courtyard from wall to wall, and both of them were flung apart, and both of them came back.

"Enough." Cang’s voice had lost every scrap of its earlier fun. Blood ran freely down his side now, and the pleasure in his face had curdled into something uglier. "That blade. What is that blade?"

"Old sword," Xuan said, wiping his mouth. "New metal. Turns out being untouchable only works on people who can’t touch you."

"Then I’ll break the arm holding it."

He came for Xuan.

It stopped being a duel and became survival. Xuan had never fought anything like it, not Yan Wuji, not the Foundation swordsman in the gorge. A mid-Golden Core cultivator with his temper up moved faster than thought and hit like a falling wall, and Cloud Step, which had saved Xuan’s life a hundred times, was suddenly only barely enough. He gave ground and gave ground, blocking what he could, absorbing what he couldn’t, and Marrow Dragon rang in his hands like a struck bell every time the curved blade found it.

The fourth blow broke two of his ribs. The fifth put him on one knee.

Xinhua hit Cang from behind with everything she had left, ice spearing up through his shadow, and he shrugged it off and put her through a pillar without turning around.

She didn’t get up quickly.

[ Xuan. ] Mira, flat and fast. [ He’s going to kill you in the next ten seconds and he’s going to kill her after. Your ribs are broken, she’s down, and there is no clever left in this yard. ] A beat. [ You know what I’m about to say. One use. It empties you to the floor and you will be a man holding a heavy sword with nothing behind it. But if you don’t spend it now, there’s no later to spend it in. ] Her voice dropped. [ Make it count. ]

Xuan got up.

He put Marrow Dragon over his head, both hands on the hilt, and stopped moving entirely — and Cang Yuwen, who had spent his whole career reading swordsmen, saw a wounded boy in a broken stance and did the only sensible thing, which was to come and finish him.

Every drop of intent Xuan owned went down his arms and into the steel. It was too much. He felt it straining at the edges of him, a Heaven-rank release crammed into a Foundation body, his meridians screaming under a weight they had no business carrying. He held it anyway for one whole second, and the world leaned in around him.

He cut down.

The dragon came out of the blade.

It ran the length of the stroke and kept going, blue-green and enormous and roaring, a manifested thing of pure sword-intent that filled the courtyard from stone to sky, and it took Cang Yuwen head-on. His guard rose. His guard meant nothing. The Armorcleave edge rode the manifestation like a rider on a beast, and the general’s untouchable defence sheared open like wet paper, and the dragon carried him backward the whole length of the yard and drove him through the keep’s outer wall and into the stone behind it.

The roar died. The light went out.

Xuan hit his knees, and the sword fell out of his hands, and there was nothing left in him at all.

Across the ruined courtyard, Cang Yuwen pulled himself out of the wall. He was opened from shoulder to hip, one arm hanging useless, and he was on his feet anyway, because mid-Golden Core cultivators do not die politely.

He took one step toward Xuan.

He never took a second.

Xinhua came out of the dark on his blind side, limping, her face bloodied, her slender blade held in a two-handed grip that had nothing elegant about it, and she put it through the ruin in his chest with the entire weight of her body behind it and her eyes wide open the whole time.

"You called me kind," she said, very quietly, into his face.

She twisted, and pulled, and Cang Yuwen went down onto the frozen stones of the fortress he’d asked for, and stopped moving.

For three full breaths, neither of them said anything. Xinhua stood over the body with her chest heaving. Xuan knelt in the wreckage with his ribs grinding and his qi at the bottom of a dry well, and he watched a panel unfold across his vision, gold-edged and lovely.

[ OBJECTIVE COMPLETE — General Cang Yuwen has fallen. ]

[ Reward granted — Foundation Breakthrough Pill (Stage 1 → Stage 3). ]

[ You beautiful, reckless idiot, ] Mira breathed. [ You did it. It’s in your inventory right now. ] Her voice snapped back to business so fast it hurt. [ And now the bad news, because I can hear boots. The fortress just lost its commander, which means every officer left is either running or panicking, and the ones panicking are coming this way in numbers. You have no qi, two broken ribs, and a princess who can barely stand. ]

Xuan reached out, closed his hand around Marrow Dragon’s hilt, and dragged himself upright by it.

Somewhere above them, past the smoke and the screaming and the dead general cooling on the stones, the main gate of Northreach was still shut — and an entire allied army waited out in the hills on a signal that hadn’t come.
