Xuan left Chen Hao working through a second bowl with a bed promised at the end of it, and instructions to be downstairs at first light, ready to start earning boots he hadn’t grown into yet. The kid nodded without looking up, already elbow-deep in the stew, and Xuan let Old Fu handle the rest: a cot in the back, a wash the boy needed a good deal more than he’d ever admit.

That left nothing on the night’s list but the stairs.

He climbed them slower than he meant to, which was its own small surprise. He’d walked into a great sect’s open trap, faced down a princess across her own table, cracked a prodigy in half in front of a screaming crowd, and none of it had put quite this weight under his ribs. One closed door and the woman behind it managed what a continent of enemies hadn’t.

[ I am going to go be somewhere else, ] Mira announced, with more tact than he’d ever credited her with. [ Very far away. Profoundly uninterested. You will not get a single word out of me. ]

And mercifully, she was gone, and it was only him.

Qingyue had left the door unlatched.

She stood at the window when he came in, hair loose and still damp down her back, the road-worn layers traded for something plain and soft, the lamplight tracing the edge of her like she’d been set there on purpose. She’d washed the frost off along with the dust. What was left just watched him cross the room, and didn’t pretend otherwise.

"You took your time," she said, and there was no bite in it at all.

"Business." He halted an arm’s length from her, near enough to feel the warmth coming off her skin. "It’s done. He’s ours."

"I wasn’t asking about the boy."

"I know."

For once he had nothing clever loaded and waiting. The room had gone quiet in a way that pressed against his ears, and she was close enough now to count the places the lamp touched her, and the gap between them had stopped being a distance and turned into a decision.

Qingyue raised a hand and laid it flat over his heart, not pushing, resting, over a beat she’d somehow knocked out of rhythm. "You’ve been planning something since the counter downstairs," she said, low, reading him the way she read everyone. "It was written all over you."

"And?"

"And I gave up waiting for you to find your nerve about three towns back." Her fingers closed in the front of his shirt.

He shut the last of the distance and kissed her, and the careful, guarded thing he’d carried the whole way up those stairs finally, gladly, came undone.

It was a determined kiss. Too determined. Her lips were closed too tightly, her angle slightly off, and he could feel the faint tremor in her jaw from the effort of holding herself so perfectly still. She was trying to kiss him the way she did everything else: with flawless, cold precision. But this wasn’t sword forms or meditation, and her inexperience was written in every stiff line of her body.

Xuan’s surprise melted into a low hum of affection. He brought one hand up to cradle her cheek, his thumb brushing the corner of her mouth, and let the other settle at the curve of her waist. He didn’t push. He just tilted his head, softening the press of their lips, coaxing her into a slower rhythm. ’Like this’, he thought, letting his mouth part just enough to guide her. ’Just breathe.’

Qingyue made a small, stifled sound against his lips—half frustration, half relief—and her hands came up to clutch the front of his dark robes. Her grip was fierce, knuckles digging into the embroidered red threads, but her mouth began to yield, following his lead. The kiss deepened, turning warm and unhurried, and he felt the tension start to drain from her shoulders.

When they finally broke apart, her breathing was uneven. Her eyes, usually so cool and unreadable, were bright with something that looked suspiciously like embarrassment. She stared at him for a long moment, her lips slightly swollen, then narrowed her eyes.

"You," she said, her voice low and accusatory, "are far too good at that for someone who is supposed to be doing this for the first time."

Xuan grinned, his red eyes glinting in the lamplight. "Jealous? Or just disappointed I’m not as clumsy as you expected?"

Her gaze flicked down to where her hands were still fisted in his robe, then back up. "Suspicious. There’s a difference."

"I swear on my cultivation," he said, letting his thumb trace a slow circle against her waist, "I’ve never done this before. You’re my first. My only." He paused, letting the teasing edge soften into something more earnest. "I’ve just... thought about it. About you. A lot."

Qingyue’s cheeks flushed a delicate pink, but her expression remained stubbornly composed. "Thinking about it doesn’t explain practical skill. That was not the kiss of a man who has only theorized."

"Maybe I’m just a natural talent," he murmured, dipping his head to brush his lips against the corner of her jaw. "Or maybe you inspire me."

She let out a breath that was almost a laugh, dry and self-deprecating. "Ridiculous man." But her hands unclenched from his robe, sliding up to rest on his shoulders instead. It was a small surrender, an admission that she wasn’t going to retreat.

Xuan kissed her again, slower this time, giving her every opportunity to pull away. She didn’t. Her fingers curled into the fabric of his shoulders, and when his tongue traced the seam of her lips, she opened for him with a shaky inhale. He explored her mouth with patient strokes, learning the taste of her—faint tea and something sweeter underneath—while his hand at her waist tugged her closer until their bodies were flush.

He could feel the rapid hammer of her heart against his chest, or maybe that was his own. It was hard to tell anymore.

"We can stop," he whispered against her lips. "Whenever you want. Just say the word."

Qingyue pulled back just enough to meet his eyes. Her face was still flushed, her hair slightly mussed from his fingers, but her gaze was steady. "I don’t want to stop." She swallowed, and some of that brittle composure cracked, revealing the raw nerves beneath. "I’m... I want this. I want you. I’m just not certain what to do."

"Neither am I," he admitted, and the confession seemed to startle her. "But we’ll figure it out. Together."

Something in her expression softened. She reached up, her fingers brushing the high collar of his robe with tentative curiosity. "Then take this off. I want to see you."
