Chapter 209: Poker Table Strip Therapy
I swear I hear it. The soft, wet little sound of her body agreeing with me before her mouth even gets the chance.
Her knees actually buckle a fraction, heels wobbling on the tile, and I catch her weight with a loop of tail around her waist without even thinking about it, pure reflex at this point.
"Matt," she breathes, and her voice has gone somewhere else entirely, lower, rougher, the shy stammer draining out of it word by word like water down a plughole.
"Yeah?" I tug the chain again, just to watch what happens.
Her eyes flick up to mine, and the colour’s already deepening, sliding from that soft candy pink into something darker, something with teeth in it.
"You have no idea what you just started," she says, and for a second the shy girl is gone completely, replaced by something that looks a lot more like a predator sizing up its next meal.
I grin, fangs and all. Old Mate, you seeing this?
[System: Mate, I’ve seen a lot of things today. This one’s going in the highlight reel.]
The elevator doors are still open behind her, casino floor waiting three levels down, and I figure we’ve got about a thirty-second window before either of us does something we can’t take back in a semi-public hallway.
I tug the chain one more time, slow, testing.
"You wanna behave," I say, "or you wanna give the empty casino a show nobody’s around to see?"
Her answer isn’t words. It’s her stepping forward, closing what little distance is left, the chain pulling taut between us, and the fact that I can feel the heat coming off her skin through actual smoke tells me exactly which option she picked.
"Strip. Slow. I want to watch."
Internally, I am not a cold mafia boss. Internally I am a teenager who just found his older brother’s laptop history, poorly hidden panic dressed up as swagger. But she doesn’t need to know that.
Cherry’s whole body goes rigid, shy-Cherry visibly fighting for control somewhere behind her eyes, and then loses. Her spine straightens. Her chin lifts.
"You want a show," she says, voice dropping a full octave, slow and deliberate, "you’re gonna have to earn it."
There she is. Succubus mode, fully loaded, safety off.
"Baby, I own the building." I let my grin split wide, fangs on full display. "I don’t earn things; I take them, and this time, tonight I’m owning you."
She laughs, low and rich, nothing like her usual stammer, and lets the towel fall.
"Now get on your knees."
Cherry swallows and looks down. Then gets on her hands and knees.
I walk her out onto the casino floor like that. Lingerie intact, collar looped loose around her neck, the little chain I clip to it trailing behind her as she crawls across the carpet on hands and knees, every movement stretched out and exaggerated like she’s daring me to look away first; I don’t. I
The whole place is lit up around us, neon buzzing pink and gold off empty tables, roulette wheel spinning on its own from some automated maintenance cycle, throwing red and black light across her skin in slow pulses. No dealers, no tourists. No sound except her breathing and the click of her nails on hardwood.
"Poker table," I say, voice flat, bored, like I’m reading off a grocery list instead of watching the single hottest thing I’ve ever witnessed in my very short and very weird life. "Up, good girl and on the felt."
She obeys, slow, deliberate, hips swaying with a confidence that has nothing to do with the girl who trips over her own notebook twice a week. I trail a smoke tendril down her spine, feel her shiver crawl up under my touch, and unclip one strap of nothing she’s still technically wearing.
"Question one," I hiss. "Favourite colour."
She blinks. That throws her- actual her, shy-Cherry poking through the cracks for half a second. "What?"
"Twenty questions: the rules are I strip something off, you answer something real." I lean in close, breath ghosting over her ear, cold and smoky. "Favourite colour."
"R-red," she stammers, then catches herself, voice dropping back down, dangerous and slow. "Obviously."
"Cute." I peel the second strap free, let it fall, watch her arch into the touch like she can’t help it. "Next question, first thing you noticed about me."
"That you were still fighting when all hope was lost." No hesitation this time. "You also smelt good, smelt like danger and safety. Sweet, and wrong, I knew I wanted you."
That one lands somewhere in my chest I don’t examine too closely. We move like that across the whole floor, roulette table, blackjack pit, the little private booths near the bar, each stop another piece gone, another question asked.
"Where are you from?" I ask instead, popping the clasp on her bra with two clawed smoke fingers, watching it slide down her arms and pool on the blackjack felt. "
She goes quiet for a second, longer than the others, and I watch the colour in her eyes flicker like she’s deciding how much of the truth to hand over.
"Surface," she finally says. "Nice part. Nicer than you’d think, for someone like me."
"Someone like you meaning? Beautiful? incredible? smart?"
"I wish, but no. Meaning nobody wanted a virgin succubus with broken horns and bad depth perception." She says it flat, no self-pity in it, just fact, like she’s reading off a spec sheet for a defective product. "Ran when I turned eighteen, down here around Twawi’s got room for things surface doesn’t want to look at."
I don’t say anything to that. Just peel the last strap off her shoulder, slow, and let my tail curl once around her ankle, gentle, more comfort than command.
"Why’d you stay?" I ask. "With me, after I got better? After I scared and killed those people? I mean, I know you asked me to stay with you, but you saw how dangerous my life was, well, is, so why did you stay?"
Cherry swallows. Her wings shift against her back, restless, and for a second I think she’s going to dodge the question entirely, spin it into something cute and deflecting like she usually does.
