Lust System: Conquering the World Beauties

Chapter 587 Hold The Line

Sponsored

More than a thousand soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder before the reinforced perimeter of the underground bunker.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody joked.

Even the veterans, men and women who had survived months of fighting against creatures once thought impossible, kept their eyes fixed on the horizon.

Rows of sandbags stretched for hundreds of meters, reinforced with concrete barriers, steel hedgehogs and armored vehicles positioned at carefully calculated intervals. Heavy machine-gun nests overlooked every possible approach while mobile anti-air missile systems had been repurposed as anti-personnel launchers. Self-propelled artillery waited several kilometers behind the frontline, already locked onto coordinates transmitted by reconnaissance drones circling high overhead.

Missile trucks lined the rear.

Rocket batteries stood ready.

Mortar crews waited with shells already loaded.

Several squads carried modern assault rifles fitted with thermal optics while heavier units wielded belt-fed machine guns capable of pouring thousands of rounds into a target in minutes. Anti-material rifles rested atop bipods overlooking the valley. Engineers hurried between firing positions carrying additional ammunition crates while medics prepared stretchers behind armored transports.

Every position had been planned.

Every firing lane measured.

Every soldier knew exactly where they would stand.

Because if this line broke...

There would be nothing between the enemy and the thousands of civilians sheltering beneath the bunker.

A middle-aged commander climbed onto the roof of an armored vehicle before grabbing the field microphone.

His voice thundered across the battlefield.

"ATTENTION!"

More than a thousand pairs of boots slammed together instinctively.

Helmets turned forward.

Weapons tightened in determined hands.

"You already know what stands behind us!"

His voice echoed through the loudspeakers positioned along the defensive line.

"Your wives!"

"Your children!"

"Your parents!"

"Our future!"

He pointed toward the massive steel blast doors leading underground.

"They are not soldiers!"

"They cannot defend themselves!"

"So today..."

He drew a slow breath.

"...WE DEFEND THEM!"

"YES SIR!!"

The response rolled across the valley like thunder.

The commander nodded once.

"I don’t care how many come!"

"I don’t care how terrifying they look!"

"I don’t care if they’re faster than us!"

He slammed his fist against the armored vehicle.

"THEY DO NOT TAKE ONE MORE STEP!"

"YES SIR!!"

"THEY DO NOT REACH THIS BUNKER!"

"YES SIR!!"

"THEY DO NOT PASS THIS LINE!"

The roar from over a thousand soldiers shook the defensive position.

"YES SIR!!!"

For several seconds...

Silence returned.

Then...

One young private frowned.

"...Sir..."

His voice was barely audible.

"They’re here."

Every eye followed his trembling finger.

Far beyond the tree line...

Something moved.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Then hundreds.

Within moments the distant forest appeared alive as countless dark figures poured from between the trees.

Like ants.

No...

Like an endless black tide.

The ground itself seemed to move.

Thousands upon thousands of vampires sprinted across the open terrain with frightening coordination, vaulting over rocks, abandoned vehicles and ruined buildings without slowing down.

One soldier slowly lowered his binoculars.

His face turned pale.

"My God..."

"They’re over five thousand..."

Nobody answered him.

Because everyone else had reached the same conclusion.

Another private swallowed hard.

"This isn’t a battle..."

His fingers tightened around his rifle.

"...it’s the end of the world."

Several soldiers instinctively took one step backward.

Then they remembered.

Behind them...

Children.

Families.

People who trusted them.

Running wasn’t an option.

Not anymore.

The commander’s voice exploded through the speakers again.

"ARTILLERY!"

"BARRAGE ONE!"

Several kilometers behind the defensive line—

BOOM!

BOOM!!

BOOM!!

Massive artillery guns recoiled almost simultaneously.

Dozens of shells screamed through the sky.

The sound arrived before the explosions did.

Then—

The horizon erupted.

Columns of fire burst upward one after another, dirt and shattered concrete thrown hundreds of feet into the air as shell after shell landed directly inside the advancing formation.

The first wave disappeared beneath smoke and debris.

Before the dust even settled—

"MISSILE BATTERY!"

"FIRE!"

Entire trucks shuddered violently.

Long-range missiles blasted into the sky, white smoke trailing behind them before sharply diving toward the incoming horde.

The impacts were deafening.

Fireballs bloomed across the valley.

Successive detonations rolled into one continuous wall of thunder.

The ground trembled beneath the soldiers’ boots.

Even from this distance the heat reached the frontline.

One young corporal stared with wide eyes.

"...Did we get them?"

The answer arrived seconds later.

Figures burst through the smoke.

Running.

Still running.

The explosions had scattered them.

Slowed them.

Thrown entire groups off balance.

Yet the survivors continued charging.

The commander never hesitated.

"MORTARS!"

"CONTINUOUS FIRE!"

Dozens of mortar tubes answered.

Thump!

Thump!

Thump!

Shell after shell arced overhead before crashing into the advancing vampires.

The battlefield transformed into controlled chaos.

Explosions chained together relentlessly, ripping apart the terrain and forcing the attackers to leap through burning craters and collapsing earth.

Some vampires were blasted backward.

Others disappeared beneath falling debris.

Still more simply kept running.

Their speed was terrifying.

They didn’t advance like human armies.

There were no formations.

No marching columns.

Each vampire sprinted independently, changing direction almost every second, making them nightmarish targets.

The commander watched the distance through binoculars.

"...Eight hundred meters."

His expression hardened.

"Machine-gun teams!"

"Prepare to engage!"

Metal bolts slammed forward.

Belts of ammunition were fed into waiting weapons.

Tripods locked into position.

Rifle safeties clicked off one after another until the entire defensive line seemed to inhale together.

"...Six hundred meters."

The commander lowered his hand.

"OPEN FIRE!"

The world exploded into noise.

Thousands of rifles fired together.

Heavy machine guns unleashed continuous streams of rounds that stitched across the battlefield.

Tracer fire painted glowing lines through the smoke.

The defensive wall became a storm of lead.

Several vampires stumbled.

Others rolled across the ground.

Some disappeared beneath concentrated fire from multiple positions.

Yet many more simply zigzagged between bullets with frightening agility.

"They’re too fast!"

A sergeant yelled.

"Keep firing!"

Nobody stopped.

Spent shell casings covered the ground almost instantly.

Barrels glowed.

Smoke filled the air.

The smell of burning propellant became overwhelming.

"...Three hundred meters!"

"They’re getting through!"

Several vampires suddenly broke away from the main assault, using destroyed vehicles as cover before accelerating directly toward weak points in the defensive line.

One leapt over a burning barricade.

Another vaulted an armored personnel carrier.

A third landed inside a trench before soldiers nearby could react.

The neat defensive formation immediately began to fracture.

Close-range fighting erupted across several sections of the line.

"Hold your positions!"

"Don’t let them split the defense!"

The commander shouted desperately into the microphone.

But the battlefield had changed.

This was no longer an artillery engagement.

The enemy had reached them.

And the soldiers could only hope that Vanessa, Lana, Lilith and the others would arrive...

Before the line finally broke.
