Chapter 44: Broken Bones and a Free Spatial Ring

"Is this the best your old bones can do?"

Rick spat a mouthful of bloody saliva onto the concrete floor and grinned through the split lip.

"I gave you the chance."

"But now it’s my turn."

Master Li’s emotionless eyes finally twitched. To think that this kid could still look him in the eye after getting hit by his punch. He did not give it is all, but he still used about seventy percent of power behind that attack.

And the way he smiled at him. That smile landed harder than any physical blow could.

Thirty years of training in the mountain, a lifetime of silent discipline, and this young man was treating him like a street thug.

"Boy! Lie down. Accept your beating quietly and I will leave you with just broken bones. Continue this nonsense and I will cripple you for life." Master Li looked at Rick and spoke with a calm, expressionless face.

Rick raised an eyebrow, still smiling despite the blood on his lip.

"Lie down? Old man, the only person lying down tonight is going to be you. Preferably with a few new joints that bend the wrong way."

Master Li’s expression darkened.

"You have no technique. No foundation. No respect for your elders. No knowledge of true martial arts," Master Li snorted, crossing his arms against his chest, "You are nothing but raw strength without discipline."

"And yet you need to lecture instead of finish the job? That’s embarrassing," Rick threw his arms like he was dying not from the pain, but sheer boredom.

"Insolent child!" Master Li’s eyes narrowed, "When I was your age I had already broken men twice your size."

"When you were my age the internet didn’t exist and people still thought flip phones were cool," Rick let out a short, cheerful laugh, "Times change, grandpa. Brute strength is back in fashion."

Master Li’s jaw tightened.

"You dare mock the path of cultivation. You will regret it, boy!"

"I will make you regret it."

"The only thing I am going to regret is listening to you." Rick tilted his head, still grinning, "So if you won’t attack, I will."

Master Li finally snapped.

The veteran martial artist channelled every drop of internal energy through his veins into his arms.

His hands suddenly glowed and turned a faint colour of blue.

His hands blurred into a tiger-claw strike aimed straight at Rick’s vital points. The air itself seemed to whistle with each precise movement.

And just like that, he blurred from his spot and vanished, before appearing in front of Rick the next second.

However Rick was ready this time. And unlike Roy who had already lost Master Li, Rick saw the claw aiming for his throat and ducked to avoid the strike.

But Master Li’s footwork was fluid and unpredictable.

Rick dodged the first strike, but Master Li striked again and aimed for Rick’s neck.

Rick leaned back just in time. The wind pressure from the strike still stung his skin like a thin blade.

"You only have brute strength, boy," Master Li hissed, voice gravelly with controlled fury. His body blurred again into a series of phantom step, appearing behind Rick before launching a kick straight at the knee joint.

But this time Rick counter-attacked.

He stomped his boot down with raw power, and the concrete floor cracked and shattered under the force, sending a shockwave that made Master Li’s lose balance.

And that split second of window was all that Rick needed.

His right hand shot out like a snake and clamped onto Master Li’s extended wrist with an iron grip.

"You talk too much, old man," Rick said lightly, almost cheerfully, even as blood dripped from his lip, "Let me show you a different conversation style."

And so he twisted his body weight in the opposite direction.

CRACK!

The sickening sound of bones snapping echoed through the underground garage. Master Li’s wrist bent backward at a horrific angle.

"Aaaargh!"

Master Li who has been the spokesperson of calmness and pokerface finally screamed.

However, Rick showed no mercy.

He kept his grip on the broken wrist and drove his knee upward into Master Li’s gut, folding the older man forward.

Then he raised his heavy boot and smashed it straight into the exposed kneecap. The joint bent the wrong way with a wet, crunching sound. Strength behind every kick and punch of Rick’s felt as if a stone crusher was punching a hole through Master Li.

Finally Rick let go of Master Li’s hand, but he srill did not stop.

He lifted his leg and drove his boot hard into Master Li’s side.

"Uggh!" The older man gasped and curled up, but Rick kicked him square in the face.

Master Li’s head snapped sideways and his cheek slammed against the concrete.

"Still conscious? Impressive." Rick sneered and with that he launched another kick.

And this one struck Master Li under the jaw and forced his face harder into the floor.

Rick kept going, and each kick landed with a heavy thud.

With every impact Master Li’s face was driven a little deeper into the rough surface.

One kick broke his nose. With the next kick his lips split wider. Then his eye swelled shut. The concrete under his head slowly turned dark and sticky.

"Thirty years of training," Rick said between kicks, voice still carrying that light, cheeky edge even as blood dripped from his own cuts. "And this is how you end up? Face-down in a parking garage while a ’street thug’ uses you as a doormat."

He delivered one final, heavier kick that made Master Li’s body jerk and then go limp. The martial artist’s face was now half-buried in a shallow crater of cracked concrete and his own blood.

Only weak, wet breathing showed he was still alive.

The garage fell dead silent.

"N-no... This is impossible..." Rick stammered. All the colour drained from his face, as he backed away until his back hit the body of a parked luxury car.

Rick wiped the blood from his split lip with the back of his hand and turned toward the trembling young master. His expression was almost playful, but the dark look in his eyes made Roy’s knees shake.

"You really don’t learn your lesson, do you, Roy?"

"Rick! Wait! I am sorry! My father made me do it!" Roy blurted out, throwing his own father under the bus without a second thought.

Tears streamed down his bandaged face as he pleaded with folded hands.

"Please! I was forced! My father made me do it!"

Rick ignored the pleading, and grabbed a fistful of Roy’s while dragging the screaming young master across the rough concrete. The suit tore and left a trail of blood and oil.

"Ahhh! Let me go! Please!"

Rick hauled him over to the centre of the parking and forced him onto his knees.

He grabbed Roy by the throat, lifted him just enough to look him in the eye, and delivered a rapid series of open-handed face-slaps that echoed like gunshots.

Slap!

"You wanted to break my legs?" Rick asked his teeth gritting.

Slap! Slap!

"You wanted to tear out my tongue?"

Slap! Slap! Slap!

"Let’s see how much barking you can do when your teeth start feeling loose." Rick said and pushed Roy away before standing straight.

"What a fucking useless son."

"Throwing his father under the bus."

"Poor guy does not even know me."

"It’s a good thing I am a reasonable guy."

"If I was one of those unreasonable hot-head young master."

Rick looked at Roy whose face was already swollen and red. And showed him a devilish smile.

"He would be dead by now."

Slap!

And one final backhand sent Roy crashing into a pillar and the arrogant young master was left curled into a fetal position, weeping, and in pain.

[Ding!]

[Item Detected: Low-Grade Spatial Ring on the backup the young master brought with him]

[Description: A rare ancient cultivation artifact capable of storing physical items within an internal pocket dimension. Highly coveted by elite families.]

"Ohhh!" Rick cracked his knuckles and turning his attention away from the crying Roy, walked back over to Master Li, who was still groaning on the ground.

He casually stepped onto the shattered wrist, drawing another agonised scream.

While looking down at the defeated expert, it did not take him more than two seconds to notice a faint metallic glimmer on Master Li’s uninjured left hand.

It was a dark black ring that seemed to be pulsing with a subtle, unnatural energy.

And on first sight, Rick felt attracted to it.

"Well, look at that." Rick grinned as he looked at the ring, stars practically shiining in his eyes, "My very first loot?"

And Rick yanked the ring off Master Li’s finger, ignoring the weak protest, and slipped it onto his own hand.

Just as he did, a strange, cold connection immediately linked to his mind.

"Thanks for the gift, old man," Rick said cheerfully. "I’ll take good care of it."
