Chapter 260: Her Neighbor
Nathan Fawcett took exception to Anne Sutton’s claim that he had a bad temper.
To prove what a good temper he had, he looked at Anne Sutton and said, "Actually, if you want to have dinner with Justin Shields, just go ahead!"
"..." Anne Sutton stared at the man. Uh, he had just been against it, badmouthing Justin Shields the whole time, and now he was agreeing to it?
’What is he up to now?’
Anne Sutton was a little confused.
"Are you serious?"
Nathan Fawcett said, "Of course, I’m serious."
"But weren’t you just against it?"
"If I disagreed, would you not have gone?" Nathan Fawcett looked at her.
Anne Sutton denied it, "Of course not!"
’Not go because of him?’
’In his dreams!’
Anne Sutton was wide awake now; she wouldn’t fall for any of Nathan Fawcett’s sweet talk.
She remembered back in Westhaven, how he had been nice to her, and she’d actually believed him!
Only later did she realize how badly she’d been deceived!
Nathan Fawcett looked at the woman and said, "Well, there you have it! I won’t stop you! I’m even doing you a favor! This way, you’ll also think I’m a good guy."
He was especially serious when he spoke.
Seeing him like this, Anne Sutton actually started to believe him.
Ian had already eaten while he was out, so after coming back, he didn’t eat much and was quickly full.
Nathan Fawcett ate a little by himself.
Anne Sutton went back to her room first. She hadn’t worked today, but going out to see a movie and have a meal had somehow felt more exhausting than a normal day.
After washing up, she peeked in on Ian, who was already asleep.
The light in Nathan Fawcett’s study, however, was still on.
’I wonder what he’s busy with.’
Anne Sutton paid him no mind.
She went to sleep.
...
In the morning, when Anne Sutton got up, she saw Nathan Fawcett in his sportswear, having just returned from playing ball.
The person who had been playing with him was Butler Walters.
Anne Sutton stood to the side, noticing that the man was incredibly handsome, even with a hat on.
She watched him. Although she kept telling herself that she hated this man, her gaze would still linger on him whenever she saw him.
The old butler followed behind Nathan Fawcett, who was holding his phone and making a call.
Anne Sutton returned to her room, sat down, and dozed off for a little while longer.
Since she didn’t have to work and was at the Linden Family’s house, she didn’t know what to do. Feeling bored, she made a few phone calls.
The last call was from Justin Shields.
Over the phone, his voice was apologetic. "Anne, I have to go back to Westhaven. Let’s do dinner another time! I’m sorry, something came up with work that I have to handle."
Hearing this, Anne Sutton said, "It’s fine. Go take care of your business. Work is more important."
’It seems like something urgent came up!’
After finishing the call, Anne Sutton changed her clothes and went downstairs, where she saw Nathan Fawcett sitting on the living room sofa.
Butler Walters was sitting to the side, chatting with him.
When he saw her come down, he took a sip of water from his cup, the corner of his mouth lifting in a faint arc.
’Hmph!’
’She must have gotten the call from Justin Shields. She won’t be going out this afternoon now, will she?’
’Since Justin Shields had so much free time, I figured I might as well make him busy!’
The Shields Family had always relied on Nathan Fawcett’s support.
So for Nathan Fawcett to send him away was a piece of cake.
He saw Anne Sutton and said, "Morning. Aren’t you going out for dinner this afternoon? Why are you up so late?"
"It’s not afternoon yet, is it?"
"I heard Justin Shields has to go back to Westhaven today. Are you two still able to have dinner this afternoon?" Nathan Fawcett asked this with a smug, mischievous tone.
Hearing his words, Anne Sutton asked, "How did you know?"
Nathan Fawcett placed his cup on the coffee table, his eyes filled with unconcealable pride. "Is there anything I don’t know? I’m well-informed. Is there a problem with that?"
At this, Anne Sutton looked at the man. For some reason, she felt something was off.
But then she thought, ’Maybe I’m just overthinking it!’
’Nathan Fawcett couldn’t be so petty as to get rid of someone just to stop them from having dinner with me, right?’
...
Since Justin Shields had left, Anne Sutton had no choice but to cancel their dinner plans.
However, she had nothing to do at the Linden Family’s house, so she decided to visit her new home.
Aside from her most important belongings, she had already had someone move the rest of her things over.
Arriving at her own place, Anne Sutton’s mood improved immensely.
The house Justin Shields had recommended was truly nice—the layout, the surroundings, and even the price was reasonable.
There was even a swing set in the yard.
The sun was quite nice today.
Even though it was winter.
Anne Sutton sat down on the swing, pushed off a few times, and a smile spread across her face.
She was suddenly reminded of her childhood. Her family had a swing set just like this one back then, but it was later taken down.
It was just that...
Those wonderful times could never be brought back.
Caleb Summers was passing by and stopped at the gate.
The gate was made of iron bars, and as Caleb Summers passed by, he happened to see Anne Sutton.
In the sunlight, her smile was so warm.
Caleb Summers stopped instinctively and said, "Are you new here?"
Seeing a neighbor speaking to her, Anne Sutton nodded. "Yeah."
The person before her had long hair and fair skin. At first glance, she thought he was a woman, but then she saw his Adam’s apple and realized, ’This is a man?’
Caleb Summers said, "This house has been empty for a long time. Did you just buy it?"
Anne Sutton nodded. "Yes."
Caleb Summers said, "Alright! Welcome."
Anne Sutton saw that this man was talking to her and seemed to have a decent temper.
Caleb Summers said, "Since we’re neighbors, let’s get acquainted! If you need anything in the future, you can just ask."
Hearing him, Anne Sutton said, "How so?"
Caleb Summers said, "I’m Caleb Summers. What’s your name?"
When he said this, there was a hint of showing off in his tone.
After all, there were probably very few women in Veridia who didn’t know who he was.
He had even imagined that as soon as he said his name, she would look at him with utter admiration.
But after he said it, Anne Sutton had no reaction.
She just politely replied, "You can just call me Yorke."
Anne Sutton didn’t want to give him her real name.
She was a woman living alone, and this was a man she knew nothing about.
’Besides, what kind of respectable man has hair that long?’
So she just made up a surname.
’It’s just a little white lie,’ she figured. ’It should be fine.’
Caleb Summers said, "Alright! Have you eaten?"
"No."
"There aren’t any good places to eat around here. I just bought some groceries. How about we have hot pot together later?"
He was usually busy with work and had a lot of social engagements. On a rare weekend, this particular man wanted to make hot pot at home.
He’d invited Nathan Fawcett, but that guy had to spend time with his son and mercilessly rejected him.
He didn’t have many other friends, and since he had a decent impression of Anne Sutton, he invited her to join him.
Anne Sutton said, "Isn’t that a little strange?"
"What’s strange about it?" Caleb Summers didn’t think so.
Anne Sutton said, "Inviting a woman to your house the first time you meet?"
Hearing her words, Caleb Summers’s lips curved into a smile. "You’re right, it is a little strange! In that case, I’ll bring my things over and we can eat at your place."
