Chapter 212: We Didn’t Give Her a Hard Time Because You Protected Her
At the thought, Anne Sutton’s mood soured.
Anne Sutton woke up early. The first thing she did was check on Ian, waking him up to wash his face and eat.
Though Ian was just a little over three, he was very smart and seemed to know how to do everything.
He was standing alone at the small sink, holding a little towel and washing his hands.
They had installed the sink for the baby Anne had been carrying.
It was designed specifically for a child.
It was the perfect size for Ian.
Anne Sutton stood to the side, watching him act like a little grown-up. "Does Ian have class today?" she asked.
Even though Ian was staying with Anne and didn’t have to go to school, he hadn’t fallen behind on his lessons.
He still took some classes regularly.
Otherwise, he would get very bored at home all day.
Ian nodded. "Mhm! But after today, I don’t have to anymore."
"Why not?" Anne asked, confused.
"I don’t know," Ian said. "Daddy said so!"
Hearing that it was Nathan Fawcett’s decision, Anne froze for a moment. ’Right...’
’He’s taking Ian back to Veridia, so of course, the classes would stop.’
Anne’s mood, which she had managed to calm overnight, began to sink again.
Sigh...
’I can’t bear to let him go!’
’Such an adorable little boy!’
...
After helping Ian wash up, Anne Sutton took him downstairs to get something to eat.
But as soon as they got downstairs, she saw Nathan Fawcett.
That’s right—it was Nathan Fawcett, not Ethan Linden.
He was wearing clothes from several years ago, exuding that same cold, violent aura. Even his hair was styled like it used to be, a far cry from Ethan Linden’s clean, sharp look.
Seeing him sitting there, Anne felt as if she had been transported back several years...
The sight of him filled her with a renewed sense of fear.
Ian, standing beside her, saw Nathan and nervously grabbed Anne’s hand.
"Don’t be scared," Anne said. "That’s your daddy."
"No way! My daddy doesn’t look like that."
Looking at Nathan’s fierce and cruel appearance, the boy was genuinely repulsed.
Butler Walters stood nearby, observing his master. Ever since Nathan Fawcett had gone to Anna Linden’s place, he had dressed exclusively as Ethan Linden and never looked like this.
’Seeing him change back is actually quite nostalgic.’
...
Anne Sutton walked over with Ian in her arms. Looking at Nathan Fawcett, she asked, "Why are you dressed like this?"
To Anne, this appearance was, ironically, more familiar.
’Maybe it’s because the Ethan Linden in front of me now feels like a total stranger.’
So she was more accustomed to how Nathan used to be.
Nathan glanced at her. "This look. You don’t like it?"
"I quite like it," Anne said with a smile.
"Liar," Nathan said.
"Why don’t you believe me when I’m telling the truth?" Anne said. "I’m serious! I really do like you like this!"
"Fine, I believe you," Nathan said perfunctorily. "Now hurry up and eat."
Ian sat beside them, tugging on Anne’s hand. "Mommy, don’t talk to him. He’s not my daddy."
Because even the tone of Nathan’s voice was different from Ethan Linden’s.
Nathan looked at his own son, the corner of his mouth twitching. ’Forget it. I can’t be bothered to explain.’
’Just let him think I’m someone else.’
...
After breakfast, Anne Sutton got into the car with Nathan Fawcett and headed to the company.
Today was an important day. If everything Nathan had said was true, he would very likely take control of the Fawcett Family.
The thought alone made Anne’s heart race with excitement.
Ever since her baby was lost...
She had been waiting for this, hoping for this, for far too long.
...
「The company’s board members had already entered the conference room.」
Charles Prescott and Miles Prescott had also arrived.
Miles Prescott had just returned yesterday. Charles Prescott was by his side. Because of what happened to President Sterling, a large portion of their supporters had now shifted their allegiance to Chairman Grant.
The father and son sat down.
Miles looked at Chairman Grant. "Mr. Grant," he said, "long time no see."
Hearing this, Chairman Grant glanced at him. "You’re a busy man. It’s only normal that we don’t see you."
Miles said, "The company has many matters that require my attention, so I am very busy. All this running around I do is for the company’s sake. For years, Charles and I have poured all our time into this company. And yet, I hear you’d rather have Ethan Linden take over. I also hear you’ve been making quite a few moves behind the scenes lately."
Chairman Grant replied, "I haven’t made any moves behind the scenes; I’ve done everything out in the open. The Fawcett Group belongs to the Fawcetts. Now that Ethan Linden has returned, he rightfully has the claim to inherit. When the old man passed away, he left the company to his grandson, not to you."
If it had been left to them, none of the subsequent troubles would have happened.
And Chairman Grant certainly wouldn’t be this defiant.
Miles said, "If that child had been born, we naturally would have taken good care of him. But weren’t the circumstances unavoidable? Nathan’s child was lost in a miscarriage—it’s not like you don’t know that. For you to harp on about this now, aren’t you just making things difficult? Or are you trying to cause trouble for Anne?"
He would never admit it was his fault. If anyone were to press the issue, he would just push Anne Sutton out to take the blame.
"I’ve always been very curious about how that child was lost," Chairman Grant said. "How does a perfectly healthy baby just disappear? She was clearly seven or eight months along!"
When the incident with the baby happened, Anne Sutton had come to him for help. But she had no proof at the time, and Charles Prescott denied everything...
So there was nothing Chairman Grant could do.
But having no proof didn’t mean he had no suspicions.
Miles’s expression didn’t change. He said calmly, "How would I know? When Anne was at the Fawcett estate, everything was fine. She was the one who insisted on running off to the Sutton Family, and then the baby was gone! If you’re not satisfied, then call her over. We can question her and let her give you an explanation. If I recall correctly, you were the one who pleaded on her behalf back then, weren’t you? It was only because you protected her that we didn’t make things difficult for her!"
"You know what I’m talking about," Chairman Grant said. "If you all hadn’t been planning to do something to her, why would she have left the Fawcett estate? Miles Prescott, I think it was you who couldn’t stand the existence of that child!"
Miles’s face darkened. "That’s slander. Spreading baseless rumors will cause misunderstandings among everyone. We are all people of status and standing. We know better than to make accusations without proof, don’t we?"
Chairman Grant let out a short laugh. "All of that is in the past, and I can’t be bothered to bring it up again. I’m just telling you that you are no legitimate heir. As long as the old man’s heir is still alive, you have no say in the affairs of the Fawcett Family."
Even though Chairman Fawcett was gone now, this was a principle he had always upheld.
