Chapter 217: I Thought He Had Already Left
’If I had supported her from the beginning instead of teaming up with Charles Prescott, I wouldn’t have ended up in this mess.’
’In fact, everything at the Fawcett Group would be his by now. Why would he need to walk on eggshells around the Prescotts?’
Yvonne Evans said, "She should be able to help the company now, right?"
Sean Sutton replied, "I’m just afraid she’ll ignore me."
’Now that she’s the chairman, all it would take is a single word from her to help me. Her word carries more weight than Charles Prescott’s now.’
’But now... she knows about me and Maya Evans. She must still hate me!’
But after seeing the news, Sean Sutton’s spirits lifted.
’I can’t give up!’
...
By the time Anne Sutton finished her work and came out, it was almost eleven o’clock!
She had signed so many agreements that her hand felt like it was about to fall off.
’This really isn’t a job for a human!’
It wasn’t the least bit easier than her old job at the hospital.
She walked out and saw Charles Prescott still standing there. "All done?" he asked.
Anne Sutton replied, "Yes. What is it?"
She wasn’t as angry when she saw Charles Prescott. In fact, looking at him now, she felt like she was watching a clown.
’Charles Prescott must be fuming inside right now!’
Charles Prescott said, "Your father came to see me again today. I’m here to ask for your opinion on the matter."
Anne Sutton’s brow furrowed at the mention of her father.
Charles Prescott continued, "His company is on the verge of bankruptcy. I told him to sell it to me, since we happen to need a company like his for production. I just don’t know what your thoughts are on this. You’re my boss now, and I’m afraid of offending you. What do you think? If you want to help him, I won’t make things difficult for him."
Anne Sutton said, "Handle it however you see fit. Don’t worry about me. I won’t get involved in his affairs. I have nothing to do with him anymore."
Anne Sutton felt a pang of sadness at the mere mention of her father.
’My mother has been so upset about this lately!’
’The man she loved her whole life, and this is how he left her in the end.’
Hearing this, Charles Prescott nodded. "Then I’ll proceed as you’ve instructed."
Anne Sutton watched him, noting how remarkably obedient he seemed at that moment.
’He really is a hypocrite!’
’Back when Nathan Fawcett and the old chairman were in charge, he was the same way. On the surface, he was completely deferential to them, but behind their backs, he wouldn’t even spare Nathan’s child. He’s a disgusting hypocrite.’
’Still, seeing him like this is much more satisfying than watching him act so smug in front of me before!’
...
Anne Sutton left the company with Chairman Grant. Charles Prescott watched her retreating figure, then smiled and lowered his head to look at his own shadow. ’Looks like she’ll have to be my new target for a while,’ he thought.
’If I don’t take care of her, there’s no telling whose hands the company will fall into.’
’That bastard Nathan Fawcett...’
’He really knows how to make people suffer!’
...
「The next morning.」Before Charles Prescott could even leave the house, Sean Sutton stormed right in and cornered him.
"Why are you here again?" Charles Prescott asked upon seeing Sean Sutton.
Mrs. Prescott, who was eating with her grandson nearby, shot Sean Sutton a look of disgust. ’It’s him again!’
’Anne Sutton’s father!’
’The debt collector is here!’
Sean Sutton announced, "I’m here to talk about the company!"
Charles Prescott looked at him. "Regarding the company, there’s no way I can help you."
"Charles Prescott, my Anne is the chairman now! You think you can push me around like this? Believe it or not, I’ll have her take you down!"
Charles Prescott calmly picked up his cup. He had already asked for Anne’s opinion last night. Not helping Sean Sutton was a goal they both shared.
"Even so, I can’t help you," Charles Prescott said. "You should leave."
Mrs. Prescott walked over and looked at Charles. "Anne Sutton is the chairman? Did I hear that correctly?"
Sean Sutton glanced at the old woman, remembering how she had bullied him before. He snorted and said proudly, "Everything in the Fawcett family is up to my Anne now! She’s the Chairman of the Fawcett Group! Your Charles has to answer to her now."
Mrs. Prescott stared at Charles. "That’s impossible! She’s just a woman..."
"It’s true," Charles Prescott confirmed.
Mrs. Prescott was speechless. She thought back to all the things she had said to Anne in the past. ’She’s not going to cause trouble for me, is she?’
’I never thought things would turn out like this!’
’How on earth did she become the chairman of the Fawcett Group?’
...
Sean Sutton glared at Charles Prescott. "So you’re really not going to help me?"
"I’ve already made my offer. Sell the company to me at the price I offered."
The initial offer was three billion, but the last time Sean Sutton came, Charles had already lowballed him down to one hundred million. That’s right, just one hundred million.
It would keep him out of prison and let him walk away with a hundred million.
Enough for him to live out his golden years in peace.
But Sean Sutton refused.
His company was worth more than that. It was his life’s work, and he wasn’t ready to give it up.
...
Seeing that Charles Prescott was completely ignoring him, Sean Sutton stood up. "Fine! Charles Prescott, you’ll regret this!"
With that, he stormed out the door.
Charles Prescott watched Sean Sutton’s retreating figure, unconcerned.
...
「In the morning.」Anne Sutton was still in bed. She had gotten back late last night, so she woke up late.
She sat up, realizing her alarm hadn’t gone off. When she checked her phone, she saw that it had been turned off at some point.
The man who had been beside her was gone.
Anne Sutton froze for a moment. ’He’s gone?’
She sat up. Just then, her phone rang. It was the hospital director. "Anne."
"Director, I’m so sorry, I overslept," Anne said.
"Not at all, not at all," the director said. "I’ve already made arrangements here at the hospital. You must be very busy! Just focus on your own affairs. You can come back whenever you’re finished."
The whole world knew that Anne Sutton had become the chairman!
’Of course he had to curry favor with her now.’
After all, her position was now even higher than Charles Prescott’s.
Anne was taken aback by the director’s words, but she didn’t have time to dwell on it. She quickly got out of bed. There was no sign of Nathan Fawcett in the house. ’He said he was leaving tonight. He couldn’t have gone back already, could he?’
Standing barefoot on the carpet, the thought that Nathan Fawcett was already gone made her eyes instantly well up with tears.
"You’re up?"
Before a tear could fall, Nathan Fawcett’s voice came from behind her. Anne turned to him. He was dressed much as he had been yesterday and was coming in from the backyard.
"You didn’t leave?" Anne asked, surprised.
"My flight is at six this evening," Nathan Fawcett said. "Slept well?"
Anne awkwardly averted her gaze so he wouldn’t see her red-rimmed eyes. "I forgot to set my alarm."
Nathan Fawcett said, "I turned it off this morning. It was too loud. I also called the director for you. You should get some rest. A lot has happened in the last couple of days. It’s been hard on you."
