...

John closed his eyes and fell asleep instantly for once.

However, an hour later, someone slipped in from the open window alongside the cool air. Her footsteps made no sound as she came closer.

The invader was in black and white spandex, looming beside John’s bed.

’He’s really sleeping so soundly after causing all that mess.’ Spiderwoman took off her mask, and as the blonde hair settled around her face, a frown formed on her cute brow.

Gwen had a meeting with Nick Fury regarding her addition to the Avengers’ Initiative, but he suddenly cancelled, and she got hit with the news of the attack on Centurion Club. The same place John had gone to.

Honestly, she hadn’t switched to her Spiderwoman suit faster before this. But by the time she had reached the place, everything was already over, and there were people moving all over the place, helping the victims.

Thankfully, she got a rundown of the situation over the phone from Natasha and followed John home after he had spent over 60 minutes stuffing himself in that IHOP.

"So damned carefree, aren’t you?" She lightly poked at his cheek with a slight pout.

Even now, he seemed out for the count when someone had broken into his place. And after hearing the details, she couldn’t blame him. Still, she was worried sick.

What was she supposed to do if something happened to him and she wasn’t there to watch over his back?

They still hadn’t talked about her Spiderwoman secret, and she still hadn’t asked him how his powers came either. Honestly, there was so much to talk about. So much to ask.

But if something had happened today, she would never get the chance to ask those questions deep in her heart.

’I shouldn’t have cancelled going to the party.’ With the glove off of her right hand, she brushed the brown hair away from his brow.

Before she could register it, Gwen was already on the bed, leaning over him as she watched him sleep. She twisted a loose strand of his hair with her finger as her thumb slowly caressed his cheek with a tender touch.

His strong nose, the sharp jawline, even the shape of his ears. In that moment, she felt it all and tried to commit it to memory. Because she almost didn’t get to feel any of it. If something did happen tonight, what would she even remember about him?

’If he wakes up right now, my heart might explode.’ She smiled, watching his chest rise and fall with each warm breath.

"If you were awake, I would’ve kissed you," Gwen muttered slowly, her heart beating loudly as she looked at his face.

The corners of her lips raised a little as his fingers slid up her back. She pressed her hand on his chest, feeling his heartbeat rise a little as his left eye opened sneakily to catch a peek.

"Eyes closed, mister." She whispered, leaning in, just inches away from his lips. He had been awake for a while, probably the whole time.

But that didn’t matter; she had to keep her words now.

She could hear her own heart beating in her ears as their lips touched. Light and simple. No movie-like kiss where they were breathing heavy, no tongue action or groping at each other. Just a short and meaningful exchange that lasted a few seconds.

But it was damn sweet. A bit too sweet for Gwen’s already swooning heart.

"I have to go." She whispered, feeling his warmth on her lips.

It wasn’t an excuse to run away. She hadn’t been doing her Spiderwoman activities properly because of the pressure from the Avengers’ initiative and everything it entailed.

In fact, she hadn’t even slept more than two hours a night for the past few days now.

But his hand gripped her waist tight, fingers clinging to the curve of her hip. His other palm pressed against her face, fingers sliding in her hair, cupping her ear. She expected another kiss, but her cheek rested against his chest the next moment.

"You should rest." He said softly, his chin resting on her hair.

"But I have to..." She tried to argue until he lightly caressed the back of her head.

"You deserve rest, too, Gwen." John just wouldn’t take no for an answer.

’He always knows what to say to me.’ Gwen sighed, leaning onto his body completely.

Sleeping on someone’s chest, it wasn’t all that comfortable. But the romance novels hadn’t lied about one thing. Hearing the heartbeat of the one you like, it was very soothing indeed.

’I might get addicted to this.’ It was a bit too much for the heart of someone who had zero romantic experience in her life.

But there was one thing she knew: it was a great way to fall asleep.

***

The morning came fast for one of them. Gwen had started twisting and turning the moment John left, burying her face in the pillow and the blanket that still smelled like him.

She slowly sat up on the bed, eyelids barely open and her hair a mess, to the sound of sizzling bacon.

"Finally up, are you?" John smiled, whisking the eggs. "Wash up and change."

"Un..." Gwen’s face started to redden as she watched his back.

Although they hadn’t done anything too scandalous last night, compared to what she thought would happen at least, it still made her face redder when she slipped into his T-shirt after taking a shower.

The bright blue graphic T-shirt was a bit too small for someone his size, the black jeans too. But Gwen didn’t need to ask who it belonged to. It had his smell all over it, with the light scent of fabric softener the shirt from that day had.

The jeans were a bit tight around her thighs, but it was ok. But glancing at the new toothbrush he had gotten her, she wondered if leaving it here was a good choice. Didn’t leaving it here mean that she had made up her mind to spend the night here often?

’It’s ok, Gwen, this is nothing compared to facing terrorists and villains with cybernetic arms.’ She psyched her up while looking in the mirror before stepping out.

In truth, there was no need to be this worked up. They had only slept together in the same bed, after a kiss that couldn’t be called passionate by any stretch. He just held her all night in that skintight suit, yeah, totally no big deal.

But the moment she opened the door, John had placed a plate for her at the table with that inviting smile. And all that courage just cracked.

Honestly, why was he in a Hello Kitty apron with that build? And what was with that domestic vibe that made it work?

’I might be going crazy.’ Gwen sat down, trying to keep a straight face.

The only thing that brought her back to earth was the fact that all John could cook was tornado omelettes, bacon, premix pancakes, and steaks. That seemed to be the John special.

What irked her was that he still knew more about cooking than her.

Chewing the bacon like she had a personal vendetta against it, Gwen finished her breakfast and got ready to leave. It was a bit too much to be swinging out the window, and since she already had a change of clothes, leaving through the front door was better.

"See you at Uni." Gwen left with a smile; part of her wanted to kiss him goodbye, but that might be a bit too much for her shy heart.

And the moment the door clicked shut, John sighed. He sat down on the bed, face in his hands.

’This body has too much virility for its own good.’ He had been unable to get a wink of sleep after Gwen joined him in the bed.

Needless to say, his soldier had been at attention the entire night.

The skintight suit left nothing to the imagination. He was feeling every bit of her curves. But with how peacefully she slept, John kept himself in check by thinking about the deadpan face of his uncle.

It wasn’t like his uncle wasn’t a handsome dude, but he had the expression of a dead fish 24/7. And he somehow made others just as unenthusiastic as himself when he was around. That had helped him calm down and pass the night without making any hasty moves.

But it was sort of hard to forget that feeling, even more so when she had been nuzzling in his neck the entire night. And even now, she left wearing the clothes he had worn to Uni before his size changed.

"Distraction, Distraction." John slapped himself straight and turned on the TV for news.

He had expected the usual morning mundaneness, but found his name on the news. Not John Grayson, but the other one.

"John Doe, the writer of Fight Club, has he truly sparked a change with his work? Is this spark positive or negative? Let’s take a look into that."

Seemed like the start of the day would be quite monumental.
