Chapter 43: S.H.I.E.L.D. Asks for Help
"To prevent the call from being intercepted, I had no choice but to come in person."
Hill sat down elegantly and efficiently on the sofa across from Orion Cross, placed the documents in her hand on the table, and glanced at the television beside them, which was still playing the news.
"It seems you already know. Tony Stark was attacked, and there’s been no word from him since. His fate is unknown."
"This attack was not an accident. It was a planned kidnapping."
"There are only two possibilities. First, there’s a problem among Stark Industries’ upper management."
"The second..."
When Hill reached this point, she glanced at Susan. After confirming that Susan was the person Nick Fury had entered into the system yesterday, she lowered her voice and said, "Nick Fury suspects that a spy has been planted inside S.H.I.E.L.D."
As one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D., Howard Stark’s son was naturally someone S.H.I.E.L.D. would not sit back and ignore.
That was why Nick Fury had long since arranged for S.H.I.E.L.D. field agents to record Tony Stark’s daily schedule to prevent accidents.
But now, Tony Stark had encountered an attack less than half a day after arriving in the Middle East. With that level of execution and efficiency, someone had definitely exposed Tony’s exact itinerary.
"He should be a little more confident and remove the word ’suspects.’"
Orion Cross smiled as he spoke.
"You also think a spy appeared inside our organization and exposed Stark’s itinerary?" Hill frowned slightly and asked.
"No, but I think taking this opportunity to thoroughly investigate would be good for you."
Orion Cross naturally knew that this time, the Hydra moles inside S.H.I.E.L.D. had inexplicably taken the blame.
"Only Stark Industries’ upper management, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the military knew Stark’s movements."
Hill flipped through the documents on the table and spoke to Orion Cross.
"Why not suspect the military?"
Susan sat down curiously and asked.
She knew that since the female agent in front of her had not asked her to leave, it meant she had already been treated as one of Orion Cross’s people, which meant one of their own.
Since that was the case, there was no need for her to keep pretending to be an outsider. If she had doubts, she could just ask directly.
"The military would love to treat Stark like their own father. They have no reason to do this."
Hill shook her head and spoke.
The military was the first to benefit from the various new weapons Tony Stark developed. They also had a long-term cooperative relationship right now. What meaning would there be in getting rid of their own partner for no reason?
It could even be said that if the military had to make a choice right now, they would rather destroy Stark Industries than destroy Tony Stark himself.
"All right. Then how long has he been missing? Since it’s already being reported on television, it shouldn’t have been a short time, right?"
Orion Cross glanced at the television screen and spoke.
Naturally, he would not ask Hill why Nick Fury had not come to him for help immediately.
Only two days had passed since Coulson had found Orion Cross after he left the seal.
With Nick Fury’s cunning methods, he would naturally satisfy Orion Cross’s requests first before slowly bringing up his own ideas.
"Nearly half a month. The military is putting pressure on us now, hoping we’ll send Level Nine and Level Ten agents to search for Stark," Hill said in a low voice.
"I can help you, but I have one requirement."
"A very simple requirement for you."
"This house may not be enough in the future. Help me take over this entire street."
Orion Cross tapped his finger on the table and looked at Hill as he spoke.
"I think when it comes to money, you can discuss it with Stark. He will definitely be very willing to pay for his own life."
Hill politely refused him outright. Buying an entire street in America’s economic center was not the kind of expense she dared agree to.
"Of course, I wasn’t planning to have you pay."
Orion Cross smiled at Hill with an extremely generous expression. "What I need is for you to place this street entirely under my name. No one else is allowed to interfere with anything on this street."
After learning extradimensional magic and seeing the precedent of Invisible Woman arriving from another world, Orion Cross already had a new idea.
And first, he needed an "ordinary" base.
"This request... Then why didn’t you choose one of those villa areas yesterday?"
Hill felt somewhat depressed. Orion Cross’s request would bring quite a bit of trouble. After all, this place could still be considered part of New York’s central area, and there were too many ordinary people.
If it had been one of those sparsely populated villa areas, even if Orion Cross said he wanted to demolish the villa and build a septic tank on the spot, S.H.I.E.L.D. could have handled it.
"When I’m ready to retire someday, maybe I’ll go live in a villa."
Orion Cross shrugged and spoke.
Helpless, Hill could only take out her communication device and notify Nick Fury. A few seconds later, she received a reply and looked up at Orion Cross. "He agreed."
"A pleasure doing business."
Orion Cross extended his hand to Hill.
"When are you planning to set out? If you need any support materials, you can tell me anytime."
Hill shook Orion Cross’s hand and spoke.
"Wait a moment. I’ll first find Stark’s exact location."
Orion Cross reached into his pants pocket and rummaged around.
"You have a way to know where Stark is?!"
Hill widened her eyes. After all, the hardest part of their rescue mission was precisely this. If they knew where Stark was, would their agents not be able to break through those terrorists armed with old weapons in minutes?
And... what was he preparing to take out? Some mythical pathfinding equipment? Heimdall’s horn? Captain Jack’s compass? Or a mysterious artifact from the East?
Hill stared nervously at Orion Cross’s hand inside his pocket, watching as he gripped something and slowly took it out.
The object was completely dark, gleaming with a metallic luster, and possessed a rather artistic beauty...
All right. It was just the agent phone S.H.I.E.L.D. had issued him.
That was it?
For a moment, Hill felt like she had been tricked.
Why take out a phone? Was he going to call Tathagata Buddha or Jesus?
