Chapter 897: A Promise That Could Not Be Fulfilled
When the man awoke from his slumber, he discovered that he had returned to the real world.
The blizzard had almost completely buried him beneath the snow. For some unknown reason, the traces of battle around him had vanished. Everything had returned to its original state, even Adam’s corpse had disappeared without a trace.
It was as though someone had deliberately erased all of it.
Whether it was the enormous crater blasted out earlier by the Infinite Reloaded Ceros, or the marks torn apart by the aftershocks and sword energy from their clash, everything felt as though it had only happened in a dream. There was not the slightest sign of any fierce battle having taken place.
But... was that really a dream?
The man raised a hand and pressed it against his chest, feeling the faint ache in his ribs as his eyes narrowed slightly.
Other things could deceive him, but his memories and his body told him that everything that had happened earlier was real. It was only that someone had somehow "erased" it.
At that moment, a mechanical voice suddenly rang out in his mind.
"Ding~"

The man suddenly blanked out for several seconds.
The voice in his head gave him a strange sense of familiarity, yet he could not remember what it was.
However, the mechanical voice had no intention of sparing him. Immediately afterward, a series of continuous notifications exploded in his head one after another, shaking his mind until he felt dizzy.

At last, the mechanical voice disappeared, returning to silence.
"To think I almost even forgot about the system..."
The man rubbed his hair, a bitter smile surfacing on his face as he muttered to himself: "If not for the mission completion notification, I might really never have remembered it."
Although more of his memories had returned, it also made him realize the seriousness of the problem.
Even the existence of the system could be forgotten. This was definitely not normal memory loss. It was more as though some sort of force had constantly been obstructing the restoration of his memories, especially his own name.
"Looks like some people... really don’t want me to remember my own name."
The man’s gaze grew deeper as he muttered: "But it doesn’t matter. Sooner or later, I’ll reclaim my name!"
He could clearly sense that he was incomplete.
Only after reclaiming his name would that feeling of emptiness deep within his heart finally be filled and completed.
But it didn’t matter. Sooner or later, he would find it!
The man firmly believed that he would definitely reclaim his name and uncover the true culprit behind all of this.
"Hoo... I’ve delayed long enough. Time to bring Yvette home."
The man slowly exhaled, then cast his gaze into the distance, locking onto the positions of two spiritual pressures before disappearing from the spot with Flash Step.
Not long after he vanished, a slender man appeared.
If the man had still been there, he would definitely have recognized him. This was the very same figure from Adam’s third memory, the one draped in a multicolored robe and wearing a golden double crown. Adam had called Him... Nyarlathotep.
"Tsk... failed again, huh."
Nyarlathotep wore a smile at the corner of His lips as He looked toward the direction the man had departed, speaking in an amused tone: "Even Adam couldn’t kill him. Looks like he’s not far from truly awakening. What a troublesome fellow."
"The surroundings have already been restored... is that meant as a warning to me?"
He crouched down and scooped up a handful of snow into His palm, as though cradling some precious treasure, strange colors flickering in His eyes: "If not for those eyes that can alter past and future, why would I need to go through so much trouble and use such a despicable method as borrowing another’s hand to kill?"

After sighing, He stood silently amidst the snow for a long while.
It seemed He was considering what to do next. Nyarlathotep’s eyes flickered as a half-smiling expression emerged on His face: "Since they want him to awaken, and there’s no way to stop it anyway, why don’t... I help accelerate things a little?"
The moment this thought appeared, He could not help but burst into laughter.
"Hahahahaha..."
"Interesting, far too interesting. That’s exactly what should be done!"
"I really want to see, after he truly awakens, which of you two will come out superior!"
"Don’t you want him to awaken?"
"Then I’ll help you out. Just hope that when the time comes... you won’t blame me."
Laughing loudly, Nyarlathotep’s figure gradually faded away, as though He had never appeared at all.
Amidst the endless falling snow, it seemed as though a pair of mysterious eyes silently watched over everything.
...
"It’s already over... Captain America."
Hive looked down from above at Steve, who was kneeling on the ground in a miserable state. His tone carried a trace of arrogance: "You’ve truly disappointed me. Just a few corpses were enough to reduce you to this."
"You... despicable bastard!"
Steve gritted his teeth until they nearly shattered as he lifted his bloodshot eyes, veins bulging at the corners: "You actually... actually used their corpses!"
Facing his former comrades, even though they were already dead, he still could not bring himself to strike ruthlessly. In the end, he exposed an opening while being overwhelmed, and all four of his limbs were branded with the eyeball symbol.
"To say something this childish... are you an idiot?"
Hive kicked Steve square in the face, flipping him onto the ground before stepping forward and crushing his head beneath his foot. With a savage grin, he said: "There has never been such a thing as noble or despicable in battle. There is only victory and defeat!"
"A weakling shackled by the past has no right to lecture me!"
"The victor now is me. Look at your pathetic appearance. If only you had been a little more decisive and smashed in those few people’s heads, perhaps you wouldn’t have ended up like this. Softness and compassion... humans are such weak creatures!"
The immense pressure crushed down upon his skull, suffocating him from lack of oxygen.
His vision quickly turned blood-red. Everything became blurry and indistinct as tangible death enveloped Steve.
Was he... going to die?
Die in this cold laboratory. Die beneath the Alps.
"I’m sorry... Carter."
Steve’s eyelids slowly closed as weakness spread throughout his body: "I’m going to break our promise... That dance... I’ll dance it with you in the next life."
"Finally got it!"
Greed flickered in Hive’s eyes as he impatiently split off a parasite, sending it flying along his arm toward the unconscious Steve.
Whoosh!
A piercing sound suddenly exploded through the air.
Just as the parasite was about to burrow into Steve’s brain, a deep blue light arrow suddenly appeared and nailed it viciously into the metal floor.
"Who?!"
Just as his prey was about to fall into his hands, someone had suddenly interfered. Hive furiously raised his head and looked toward the direction from which the light arrow had come.
"A passing hero."
The man’s expression held neither joy nor sorrow, yet his gaze bypassed Hive and landed upon the young girl inside the container, a trace of gentle warmth appearing in his eyes.
"I’ve come to take you home... Yvette."
