Chapter 347: The System’s Sick Sense of Timing
"Why is everyone coming out from the dead?" Rick muttered, shaking his head. He let out a harsh, annoyed sigh.
Marnus kept the suppressed pistol aimed perfectly at Rick’s head. The billionaire heir looked like a ghost. He was breathing heavily, his chest heaving under his shredded, soot-stained suit. His one good eye burned with an intensity that could melt steel.
"You ruined everything," Marnus growled. "My tower. My grandfather’s vault. My legacy. You stole the Precursor Core. Where is it?"
Rick just laughed. He shoved his hands deeper into his pockets and leaned back against the medical bed where Silas Warner lay dying.
"I traded it for a hypersonic jet and a really nice watch," Rick smirked. "You should have seen the explosion at the Chateau, Marnus. It was beautiful. I even pinned that scary assassin of yours to the wall like a bug."
"Shut your mouth!" Marnus screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Victoria stepped forward. She placed herself directly between Marnus’s gun and Rick.
"Marnus, lower the weapon," Victoria commanded. Her voice was steady, projecting her authority as a crime boss. She wasn’t going to let her nephew shoot her new favorite toy.
Marnus glared at his aunt. "Move, Victoria. This piece of trash destroyed our family’s assets. He killed our men. He needs to die right now."
"He is a hostage, Marnus, and he is needed," Victoria shot back. She pointed at the heart monitor, which was steadily beeping slower and slower. "My father has been poisoned. We don’t have time for this."
Marnus hesitated. He looked at the frail, dying man on the bed. For all his arrogance, Marnus still feared and respected his grandfather.
"He’s a thug," Marnus spat. "He’s completely worthless to us."
Before the argument could escalate, the heavy soundproof doors clicked open. Rachel walked back into the room on her own. She looked exhausted. She was carrying a clipboard full of blood test results.
She stopped in her tracks when she saw Marnus Warner standing in the room, looking like a charred zombie holding a gun.
"What is going on?" Rachel asked, her eyes darting between Rick, Victoria, and Marnus.
"Never mind him," Victoria demanded. "Did you figure out the poison?"
Rachel swallowed hard, looking down at the floor. "I know what it is. It’s a synthetic neuro-toxin called Ghost Viper. I know the antidote we need, but... it might not come to us in time. I don’t have the exact synthesis process. I can’t do anything."
Marnus’s face twisted into a mask of pure, unhinged rage. He snapped his arm to the side, pointing his suppressed pistol directly at Rachel’s head.
"Then you are completely useless!" Marnus screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Rachel froze in absolute terror. She looked at Victoria for help, but the blonde crime boss just stood there, her face cold and impassive. Victoria didn’t make a single move to stop her nephew.
"Wait," a calm, arrogant voice cut through the tension.
Rick stepped forward. He looked directly at Marnus and Rachel.
"I can do it," Rick said, ignoring the gun. "I’m going to give you the exact recipe."
Rachel frowned, her hands shaking. "Rick, I am a trained medical professional. You are a... whatever you are. You can’t just make up an antidote for a highly complex synthetic neuro-toxin."
"Just write this down," Rick said, ignoring her protests.
He closed his eyes for a split second, silently accessing the Lust System’s diagnostic database.
’System, give me the exact synthesis process for the Ghost Viper antidote.’
[Ding!]
[Antidote Recipe Retrieved.]
[Ingredients Required: 50mg of Atropine Sulfate, 10ml of synthetic Adrenaline, 5mg of activated Charcoal, and exactly 2ml of Dimercaprol.]
[Process: The Adrenaline must be heated to exactly 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit before binding with the Dimercaprol. Add the Atropine drop by drop over a span of two minutes. The Charcoal acts as the final binding agent to neutralize the synthetic proteins.]
Rick opened his eyes. He looked directly at Rachel.
"You need fifty milligrams of Atropine Sulfate," Rick began, speaking with absolute confidence. "Ten milliliters of synthetic adrenaline. Five milligrams of activated charcoal, and two milliliters of Dimercaprol."
Rachel stared at him, her jaw dropping slightly. Those were highly specific, highly volatile chemical compounds.
"Rick... how do you know those specific measurements?" Rachel asked, completely bewildered.
"I read a lot," Rick smirked. "Now listen closely to the process. You have to heat the adrenaline to exactly ninety-eight point six degrees. Body temperature. Not a degree higher or it degrades. Bind it with the Dimercaprol first. Then you add the Atropine, drop by drop, over exactly two minutes. If you rush it, the mixture will crystallize and kill him instantly. Add the charcoal last."
Rachel’s medical mind raced. The chemistry actually made theoretical sense. The Dimercaprol would act as a heavy metal chelator, stripping the synthetic base, while the heated adrenaline and atropine jumpstarted the failing organs. It was brilliant. It was also terrifyingly dangerous.
"Who gave you this formula?" Rachel whispered.
"A little bird," Rick lied smoothly. The existence of the System was his ultimate trump card. Nobody could ever know. "Can you make it or not?"
Rachel looked at the dying billionaire on the bed. "I can make it. But if you’re wrong about this, Rick... it will stop his heart the second it enters his bloodstream."
"I’m not wrong," Rick said. "Go make it. Victoria, go with her to the lab. Make sure she has everything she needs."
Victoria nodded. She looked at Rick with a mix of awe and burning lust. His sheer competence and commanding aura were pushing her Carnal Calibrator even higher.
"I’ll ensure she gets it done," Victoria said. She gestured for Rachel to follow her. The two women left the room, the heavy doors clicking shut behind them.
Rick was alone with Marnus again.
Marnus kept his distance, his one good eye tracking Rick’s every movement.
"You think saving my grandfather buys your life?" Marnus sneered. "You think I’ll just let you walk out of here after everything you’ve done?"
"I think you don’t have a choice," Rick said, stepping closer to Silas’s bed. "Because if I die, your family loses the only leverage it has against Corporate Oversight. They have the Precursor Core now, Marnus. Your little toy is gone. They will come for the rest of your empire next."
Marnus’s face darkened. He knew Rick was right. Corporate Oversight was a shadow agency that swallowed billionaires for breakfast.
"I will get it back," Marnus promised.
"Good luck with that," Rick laughed.
An hour later, the doors opened again. Rachel walked in, carrying a small metal tray. On the tray rested a single syringe filled with a cloudy, dark grey liquid.
Victoria followed closely behind her, looking tense.
"I followed your instructions exactly," Rachel said, her voice tight with stress. She walked over to Silas’s IV line. "This is it. The antidote."
"Administer it," Victoria ordered.
Rachel took a deep breath. She uncapped the syringe and injected the dark grey liquid directly into Silas’s IV port.
Everyone in the room held their breath. The only sound was the rhythmic, weak beeping of the heart monitor.
Beep... Beep... Beep...
Suddenly, the monitor spiked.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!
Silas Warner’s frail body violently convulsed on the bed. His back arched off the mattress. His eyes snapped open, wide and unseeing. He let out a harsh, wet gasp around the ventilator tube.
"His heart rate is spiking!" Rachel yelled, grabbing his wrist. "He’s going into tachycardia!"
"You killed him!" Marnus screamed, raising his gun at Rick.
"Wait!" Rick barked, holding his hand up. "Just watch."
Silas’s body dropped heavily back onto the mattress. His chest he heave.
Slowly, the frantic beeping of the heart monitor began to stabilize.
Beep... Beep... Beep.
The pale, ashen color of Silas’s skin began to recede, replaced by a faint, healthy flush. His breathing, though still assisted by the machine, became steady and rhythmic.
Rachel quickly checked his pupils with her penlight. She checked his pulse again. She looked at the monitors, completely astounded.
"His organ function is stabilizing," Rachel whispered, unable to believe her own eyes. "The toxin... it’s neutralizing. He’s going to live."
Victoria let out a massive sigh of relief. She looked at Rick, her ice-blue eyes shining with intense admiration.
Marnus slowly lowered his gun. He stared at his grandfather, then glared at Rick with a complex mix of hatred and begrudging respect.
"You saved him," Victoria said, stepping closer to Rick. Her heavy breasts brushed against his arm.
"I told you I solve problems," Rick smirked. He looked directly at Marnus. "Now, I believe we need to talk about my compensation."
