Chapter 119: Three Days
Liam sat on the edge of the bed and let Vital Restoration work.
The warmth spread under his skin in slow waves, knitting the deeper bruises along his ribs and sealing the worst of the cuts.
The split above his eye closed first. The sharp ache in his jaw faded next. His knuckles remained swollen and split, but the edge of the pain dulled with every passing minute.
He breathed through it in silence until the damage settled into something he could carry. The first gray light of morning had begun to edge in around the curtains by the time he finally stood.
He walked to the long glass wall.
The dark shape at the end of the private road was still there.Jack had not left.
He sat on the low wall beyond the gates, elbows resting on his knees, waiting.
He had been there through the remaining hours of the night without moving. Liam watched him for a moment, then turned away from the glass.
He spent the next hours moving through the villa. He showered the dried blood from his skin, watching the water run faintly pink at his feet before it cleared.
He changed into clean clothes and checked the security feeds out of habit, scrolling through each quadrant without real expectation. Everything remained quiet. No alerts.
No movement along the perimeter except for the single figure still sitting outside. Liam made coffee and drank it standing in the kitchen, the residual heat of the System’s healing still circulating through his body.
The mug sat warm between his palms. Outside, the morning light strengthened across the lawn in slow increments.
He did not go anywhere. Jack’s presence at the end of the road made unnecessary movement pointless. There was nothing outside the gates that required his attention more than the man who had already decided to wait.
Across the city, Dexter opened his eyes to a low ceiling.
His body felt heavy. One eye was nearly swollen shut. Every breath pulled at cracked ribs. The room smelled faintly of antiseptic and old cigarette smoke.
Vargas sat in a chair near the bed and only spoke once he was certain Dexter was fully awake."Jack left with him."
Dexter stared at the ceiling for a long time. The silence stretched."Of course he did."
Vargas frowned. "You’re not surprised."
"I’ve known Jack longer than most of the men in this organization have been alive." Dexter’s voice was rough, scraped raw from the fight and from whatever damage the final exchanges had done to his throat.
"He’s the only one who ever lasted that long against me. The only one who almost won. He doesn’t care about money or rank or territory.
He only cares about the next strong opponent. The moment he saw someone who could push me that far, he was always going to follow."
Vargas said nothing. He had seen enough of Jack over the years to know the assessment was accurate.
Dexter closed his eyes again."Let him go. He’ll come back when he’s finished."
The room settled into silence. Vargas remained in the chair long after Dexter’s breathing had evened back into something closer to sleep. Outside the door, low voices moved past and faded.
The organization was already adjusting.Liam was still in the villa when his phone vibrated against the counter.Claire.
He answered on the second ring."Liam?"
"Yes."A short pause. Her voice was careful, the same way it had been since the night everything between them had changed.
"Are you free later? I wanted to talk. In person, if that’s okay." "Where?"
She gave him the name of a quiet café near her neighborhood. Nothing dramatic. Just a public place with enough space to speak without being overheard.
Liam agreed to the time and ended the call. The phone screen dimmed in his hand a moment later.
He stood in the main room for a while after the conversation ended, looking out at the private grounds. The morning light had stretched fully across the lawn.
The marks from the previous night had faded further under Vital Restoration, but the deeper fatigue remained. Three hours of uninterrupted fighting against a man like Dexter left more than bruises.
It left a weight that healing alone could not fully erase. His body felt functional again. It did not yet feel light.
Outside, Jack was still waiting.Liam set his phone down, walked to the entrance, and stepped through the gates.
Jack stood up as he approached. The large man looked rested in the daylight. The blood had been cleaned from his face, and the dark tattoos along his neck and hands stood out clearly in the sun.
He watched Liam with the same open, eager attention he had shown the moment the fight with Dexter ended. There was no tension in his posture. Only expectation.
Liam stopped a few meters away."Three days," he said.Jack raised an eyebrow but said nothing. He waited.
"Come back in three days," Liam repeated. "We’ll finish it then. No interruptions. Until both of us are satisfied."
For a moment Jack only looked at him, studying his face as if checking the offer for any hidden condition.
Then a slow, genuine grin spread across his face. He gave a single deep nod, turned without another word, and walked away down the private road with his hands in his pockets.
He did not look back. His footsteps faded into the quiet of the morning street until the bend in the road took him out of sight.
The road was empty again.
Liam turned and walked back through the gates. Inside the villa the silence settled once more. He stood in the main room and let the quiet press in around him.
Three days.
Enough time to finish healing completely and meet with Claire.
Outside, the private road remained empty. In three days Jack would return.Until then, there were other things that still required his attention.
