The message came late in the evening.Liam, was that really you on the news? I checked three times. We need to talk. In person.

Liam stared at the screen for a few seconds before answering. Yeah. It’s me.The reply arrived almost at once.

Aurelia. Tomorrow, ten. Claire is already talking about showing up at your door if you ignore this.

He let out a quiet breath. The Aurelia was still the kind of place that felt slightly removed from the rest of the city quiet marble, soft lighting, and a doorman who only opened the door for names already on the list.

He had been there once before with Victoria, back then. He arrived a few minutes early. The doorman checked a tablet and stepped aside without a word.

Victoria and Claire were already at a corner table. Victoria looked up first. The moment she saw him, the tension in her shoulders eased.

"There you are," she said softly. She reached out as he sat and rested her hand over his for a moment, the touch easy and familiar. "I was starting to think the city had swallowed you."

"Not yet," Liam said, returning the pressure briefly before letting go. Claire watched them with a small smile.

"You two still do that," she said. "That quiet little thing with your hands. Victoria didn’t argue. She did have time to do that with Claire and not right now.

Claire leaned in a little, interest clear in her voice. My office hasn’t shut up about you for two days. Three different channels. People I barely speak to were sending me the clips."

"That doesn’t make me feel better," Liam replied.Victoria studied him the way she always did when something mattered calm and fully present.

"So how did this actually happen?" she asked. "One week you’re barely on anyone’s radar, and the next you’re standing next to a case the entire city is watching."

Liam was quiet for a moment.

"There was a woman named Grace. She used to come by sometimes. When I found out what her old boss had done to her, I couldn’t ignore it. I helped her reach the right people. That’s all."

Victoria didn’t look away. There was no judgment in her face, only the same careful attention she had always given him.

"I’ve been thinking about it all night," she said.

Trying to figure out when it happened."

"When what happened?"

"When you stopped being someone I worried about, and started being someone this whole city apparently needs to worry about instead."

The three of them laughed it off. But Claire was genuinely surprised Liam had never stopped surprising her in the least he always does something mind blowing every time.

Claire’s expression changed. The earlier lightness faded. You’re still holding something back," she said. "You always do."

Liam didn’t deny it. "I usually do." I know." Claire didn’t push. She simply accepted it.

A man in a gray suit passed their table, slowed, and turned back.

"Mr. Sterling?" He sounded almost uncertain until he was standing right in front of Liam. "I just wanted to say thank you. My sister worked under Harrison for six years. She called me the night of the verdict... and she was actually smiling. I hadn’t heard that in a long time."

Liam shook his hand."I’m glad."The man nodded once and left. Victoria watched the door close behind him.

"That’s the third one I’ve heard about," she said quietly. "People stopping complete strangers just to say thank you."

Claire’s voice was softer now. "I watched Grace’s interview last night. She looked real. Happy in a way people don’t usually manage on camera."

"She earned it," Liam said. "I didn’t do any of it alone." You keep saying that," Claire replied.

"Because it’s true. She stood up and told the truth after years of being afraid to. That takes more than anything I did."

Claire looked at him for a long moment, then simply nodded. Victoria didn’t look surprised at all.

Claire recovered first.

"There’s a fundraiser this weekend," she said. "I’m hosting it with a few partners. The usual mix of people who care about the charity and people who care more about being seen caring. It’s not a small event, Liam. The guest list is selective."

Victoria spoke before he could answer.

"I already had your name added this morning," she said. Her tone was gentle but firm. "You’re coming."

"I don’t really do those kinds of parties." You don’t have to do anything," Victoria said. "Just be there. Let people see the person we’ve known was there the whole time."

Liam looked between them. The man in the gray suit. The empty villa. The number in his account that still didn’t feel fully real. Whatever life he had been living before the courtroom was already gone.

"Fine," he said. "I’ll come."Claire’s face brightened. Good. Because I already told them you would. "You told them before I even agreed?" I had faith in you, she said simply.

Liam glanced around the lounge as they prepared to leave the quiet conversations, the polished floors, the kind of room that once would have felt completely closed to him.

A week ago, no one here would have known his name.

The rest of the morning passed in quieter conversation. Victoria asked about how he was sleeping. Claire asked whether he had eaten properly in the last few days.

Neither of them pressed him for more details about the case. They already understood he would only say what he was ready to say.

When they finally stood to leave."Don’t disappear again," she said. Victoria’s hand rested lightly against his arm for a second.

"Call if you need anything," she said. "Even if it’s late." Liam nodded.

He watched them walk toward the entrance together, two women who had known him long before the rest of the city learned his name.

For a moment he stayed where he was, letting the quiet of the lounge settle around him. Then he followed them out.
