The System notice faded as quickly as it had come. Derek was already moving.

He came in hard and fast, sharper than the last time they had traded hands. His strikes were tighter, heavier, timed to drive Liam backward.

Liam drove Derek back a step for the first time, and then he moved too, closing the distance with a speed that didn’t match his age at all.

Liam took a hit from dexter square across the jaw that put white light behind his eyes, staggered, and barely got an arm up in time to block the next one from Derek coming in low.

There was nothing rushed about the way the dexter moved. In his prime he had been a heavyweight contender with a record of 31 wins, 2 losses, and 24 knockouts a fighter known for walking men down behind a tight guard and ending nights with a single clean right hand.

The footwork was still there. The timing was still there. The calm, heavy pressure that had once made younger boxers wilt under the lights was still there. He did not throw wild. He measured, stepped, and punished.

The first right hand landed solid against Liam’s side. The second clipped his jaw and put a brief flash of white behind his eyes. Liam tasted blood and stayed on his feet.

They worked together well. Derek kept the pressure high and the angles tight. Dexter waited for the openings and made them count.

Liam answered where he could short counters, an elbow that grazed Derek’s cheek, a low kick that forced Dexter to adjust but the early minutes belonged to the two of them.

His back hit a concrete pillar. A thin cut opened above his eye. His breathing stayed controlled, but the cost was starting to show.

Dexter saw it and pressed harder, the old ring instinct rising. He stepped in with a combination that had finished many nights in his fighting days jab to occupy the guard, heavy right to the body, left hook that caught Liam on the temple and sent him stumbling into the side of a dark sedan. The garage stayed quiet except for the sound of fists and breath.

Derek moved in to finish.

That was when Liam changed.

The martial skill the System had given him in the early days settled into his body without warning or display.

There was no chime, no interface. It simply arrived a cold clarity that pushed the pain into the background and made every movement precise.

His feet found cleaner angles. When Derek came in again, Liam met him with a short, brutal sequence that broke his rhythm completely.

A forearm, a knee, a straight right that put Derek into the door of the sedan hard enough to leave a dent. Derek tried to rise. Liam hit him once more and left him on the concrete, conscious but finished for the night.

Dexter’s eyes narrowed. He adjusted at once. The exchange that followed was the hardest of the fight. Dexter’s heavyweight timing still sharp, but the broader skill now moving through Liam’s body was cleaner and more complete.

They traded in close. Liam took another solid shot to the body, then answered with a sequence that forced Dexter backward for the first time a trapping hand, a short elbow, a pivot that put the older man’s back toward a support pillar.

Liam drove him three full steps, each strike heavier than the last, until Dexter’s shoulders hit the concrete hard enough to knock dust from above.

Blood ran from a cut on Dexter’s cheek. His breathing had lost some of its calm. Liam kept the pressure on, forcing him to cover and give ground.

Another heavy exchange left both men marked. Neither looked ready to fall, but both were starting to pay a price that would only climb if the fight continued.

Dexter suddenly raised one open hand and stepped back, creating space.

Liam stayed in stance, fists still up.

Dexter wiped blood from his mouth with the back of his wrist and looked at him properly. There was no anger in his face. Only the hard respect of a man who had spent his life in hand-to-hand combat and still valued true strength when he saw it.

"Enough," Dexter said. His voice was rougher than before, but steady. "You keep coming like this and we’re both walking out of here worse than we need to be. So answer me something. Why are you fighting this hard? Why get in my way at all?"

Liam did not lower his hands. "Why Claire? Why me?"

Dexter took a moment before answering. "She was never the real target. Her cousin Ben took something that belonged to me. A shipment. Cocaine. Worth millions on the street.

He disappeared with it and left a mess behind. We used her as pressure. Same reason we came after you once you stepped in the way. We needed Ben to surface. That was all it ever was."

Liam stared at him for a long moment. Behind him, Derek was still on the ground, one arm curled around his ribs.

"You can hunt Ben," Liam said. His voice was flat and final. "I won’t stop you. But Claire is finished business. No more teams. No more accidents. No one under you goes near her again for any reason. If that line gets crossed, we don’t have a second conversation. We finish this."

Dexter studied him, still breathing hard. Then he gave a short nod. "Agreed. She’s off the board.

The tension in the garage shifted. Not trust. Just a clear understanding between two men who had finished trying to kill each other for the night.

Dexter rolled one shoulder, testing the damage, then looked at Liam again. In that moment the thought settled in him cleanly this was the kind of strength he wanted near him.

Not hired muscle. Not men who folded when things turned ugly. Someone who stood his ground and made even a man with thirty-one professional wins take a step back.

"You move through this city like a man who plans to keep doing it," Dexter said. "We have a gathering in my neighborhood in a few days. Big one, the people who matter to me. Come through. Better we see each other face to face when we’re not trying to break ribs."

Liam considered the invitation in silence, then gave a single nod.

"I’ll be there."

Dexter glanced once at Derek, who was finally getting to his feet with visible difficulty. Then he turned and walked toward the exit ramp without looking back. Derek followed after a moment, saying nothing.

Liam waited until both of them were gone and the sound of their car had faded before he let his shoulders drop. His body hurt the cut above his eye, the deep bruise along his side, the lingering ache in his jaw but nothing that would keep him down.

He left the garage by a different ramp, stayed off the main streets, and did not stop moving until he had put real distance between himself and the place.

Later, in a new temporary room on the other side of the district, he stood at a small sink and cleaned the blood from his hands and face. The water ran pink, then clear. He looked at himself in the mirror for a moment and then turned away.

The fight was over. Claire was protected by the only kind of agreement that mattered in that world. A new door had opened, whether he fully trusted it or not.

He would go to the party.

And he would find out exactly how far this new arrangement could be pushed before it turned again.

For now, though, there was only the room, the quiet, and the slow work of getting his breathing back to something normal.

His ribs pulled tight with every breath. The cut above his eye had stopped bleeding but would need something better than a wet towel by morning.

He thought about calling Rowena and decided against it, at least tonight.

Instead, he sat with it alone. The truce might hold, or it might not. Men like Dexter didn’t hand out invitations lightly.

He sat on the edge of the bed in the new temporary room and let the quiet settle. The cut above his eye had stopped bleeding, but the deep bruise along his side still pulled tight every time he breathed.

His jaw ached with a dull, steady throb. None of it was enough to put him down, yet the cost of the night sat clearly in his body.

The System had stayed silent through the entire fight. No windows. No prompts. Just the cold clarity of the martial skill it had given him long ago. Now, in the stillness of the room, it finally stirred.

A soft chime sounded inside his mind.

Liam stared at the residual glow until it disappeared.

So these were the pieces the System had been holding back since the evolution. Not combat skills. Something else entirely. This is .... JACKPOT!

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, and examined the cut above his eye in the small mirror across the room.

The bruise along his ribs still throbbed in time with his heartbeat. Under normal circumstances he would have needed days to recover cleanly. The System had just offered a faster path.

He raised his right hand and focused on the first new function.

[Vital Restoration – Activate?]

He accepted.

A low warmth spread from the center of his chest outward. The pain in his side began to loosen, thread by thread. The sharp pull when he breathed softened into a dull ache, then faded further.

The cut above his eye tightened and closed, leaving only a thin, clean line that would be gone by morning. Even the lingering bruise along his jaw cooled and settled.

Liam exhaled slowly and tested his range of motion. The ribs still felt tender, but the deep damage was already knitting itself back together.

He rolled one shoulder, then the other. Everything moved more freely than it had any right to after a fight like the one in the garage.

He sat back against the headboard and let the new reality settle.
