Chapter 82: Beneath The Smile
The white lily snapped.
The sound was almost inaudible.
Yet Sera heard it clearly.
She stared at the broken stem resting in her hand.
For a long moment...
She simply looked at it.
"...I squeezed too hard."
Her smile remained exactly the same.
She gently placed the damaged flower into a nearby trash bin.
No one had seen her.
Or so she believed.
From the end of the hallway...
Lyra had.
Their eyes met.
Neither woman spoke.
The following morning...
The atmosphere inside Guardian Network Headquarters had subtly shifted.
Nobody could explain why.
Nothing had happened.
No alarms.
No new Gates.
No emergencies.
Yet conversations ended more quickly.
Silences lasted a little longer.
People found themselves glancing toward Dillan more often.
And every time they did...
Sasha was usually nearby.
Not clinging.
Not following.
Simply...
Present.
"...Morning."
Dillan entered the cafeteria carrying his usual coffee.
"...Morning."
Dana waved him over.
The familiar seat beside him remained empty.
He had barely sat down...
When another voice greeted him.
"...May I?"
Sasha stood beside the chair.
"...Of course."
She smiled warmly.
"...Thank you."
Across the table...
Dana quietly watched.
Again.
The same chair.
The same distance.
The same gentle smile.
"...You two really became comfortable fast."
Dana said casually.
Sasha looked toward her.
"...Is that strange?"
"A little."
"I suppose childhood helps."
Dana nodded slowly.
"...Maybe."
Her tone remained friendly.
But her eyes didn’t.
After breakfast...
Commander Yuna gathered everyone inside the operations room.
The abandoned subway investigation had officially been approved.
A map appeared on the screen.
Old maintenance tunnels stretched beneath central Seoul like veins beneath skin.
"We move tomorrow morning."
She pointed toward several marked locations.
"The resonance readings fluctuate every six hours."
Dr. Yeon stepped forward.
"The patterns resemble dreamwave interference."
Dillan frowned.
"...Dreamwave?"
"I’ve decided to call it that."
She enlarged the graph.
"It’s identical to the neural activity we’ve recorded during your nightmares."
Silence.
Commander Yuna looked directly at Dillan.
"...You won’t be entering first."
"...What?"
"You’ll stay in the second team."
"I can fight."
"I know."
"...But if this phenomenon reacts to you..."
She folded her arms.
"...I’m not risking unnecessary exposure."
Dillan sighed.
"...Fair enough."
The meeting ended.
Most Hunters returned to preparing equipment.
Sasha quietly waited outside.
"...Mission tomorrow?"
Dillan nodded.
"Apparently."
"...Be careful."
"I always am."
She smiled.
"...No."
"...You aren’t."
He laughed.
"...Was I this reckless as a kid?"
She thought for a moment.
"...No."
"...You were just kind."
"...Those are different things."
Elsewhere...
Mira sat inside the surveillance office reviewing Sasha’s movements.
Not because she suspected a crime.
Because she wanted patterns.
Arrival times.
Departure routes.
Phone calls.
Visitors.
Everything appeared perfectly ordinary.
Almost...
Too ordinary.
"...Nothing."
She whispered.
"No mistakes."
Every record aligned perfectly.
Financial records.
Employment history.
Travel documents.
Everything.
A flawless life.
Mira slowly leaned back.
"...Nobody’s life is this clean."
Later that afternoon...
Sera found Dillan watering flowers in the greenhouse.
"...Helping again?"
He shrugged.
"They looked thirsty."
She smiled.
"You always notice little things."
"...Really?"
"You’ve always been that way."
He chuckled.
"...Funny."
"What?"
"Everyone keeps telling me who I used to be."
She lowered the watering can.
"...And?"
"I don’t know who I am now."
Silence settled between them.
Sera walked closer.
Very gently...
She adjusted the crooked collar of his jacket.
"...You’re still Dillan."
Her voice remained soft.
"...Don’t let memories convince you you’ve become someone else."
He looked at her for several seconds.
"...Thanks."
She smiled.
"...Always."
From outside the greenhouse...
Sasha quietly watched through the glass.
She didn’t interrupt.
She simply stood there.
Her expression unreadable.
After a few moments...
She quietly walked away.
That evening...
Lyra stood inside the Resonance Chamber.
The Field pulsed gently.
Then...
Another pulse answered.
Closer.
Clearer.
"...You’re quiet today."
Lyra said.
A familiar voice responded.
"...I’m happy."
"...Because he remembered?"
"...Because..."
A soft laugh echoed through the chamber.
"...He smiled at me."
Lyra remained silent.
"...Do you know..."
She asked carefully.
"...What happens if he remembers everything?"
Silence.
Long enough that Lyra thought no answer would come.
Then...
"...I don’t."
"...And that scares me."
For the first time...
The voice sounded uncertain.
Not obsessive.
Not frightening.
Just...
Afraid.
Lyra slowly closed her eyes.
"...You’re afraid of losing him again."
"...Yes."
"...Would you hurt anyone to stop that?"
The chamber became completely silent.
Several heartbeats passed.
Then...
The answer came.
Very softly.
"...I don’t want to."
Lyra’s eyes opened.
"...Don’t want to..."
She repeated.
The wording stayed with her.
Not wouldn’t.
Not never.
Only...
Didn’t want to.
Late that night...
Dillan sat alone in his apartment.
The red ribbon rested beside his notebook.
He slowly opened to a blank page.
For several minutes...
He simply stared at it.
Then began writing.
Things I Remember
A swing.
Summer.
A pinky promise.
A red ribbon.
Sasha laughing.
He paused.
The pen hovered over the paper.
Then...
Almost without thinking...
He wrote another line.
I don’t think she ever stopped waiting.
He looked at the sentence.
His chest tightened.
"...Why does that make me feel guilty...?"
Outside his apartment window...
Rain began falling.
Across the street...
A lone figure stood beneath a closed umbrella.
Watching the illuminated apartment.
Not moving.
Not hiding.
Just...
Watching.
The streetlight flickered once.
When it stabilized...
The sidewalk was empty.
Dillan never noticed.
But somewhere deep inside the Resonance Field...
A faint crack spread across the invisible membrane.
Small.
Almost impossible to detect.
Lyra felt it immediately.
And for the first time since Sasha had returned...
She whispered a name into the darkness.
"...Sasha..."
No answer came.
Only the quiet sound of rain.
Rain continued falling over Seoul.
The city lights shimmered across the wet streets like broken stars.
Inside Guardian Network Headquarters...
No one slept particularly well.
Not even Dillan.
The nightmares hadn’t returned.
Yet...
He kept waking for no reason.
Not frightened.
Just...
With the strange feeling that someone had whispered his name.
Morning came quickly.
Commander Yuna stood before the assembled investigation team.
A three-dimensional map hovered above the table.
Red markers pulsed beneath central Seoul.
"The abandoned subway station."
She pointed toward the deepest tunnel.
"Three maintenance crews disappeared here after the Gates appeared."
Another marker lit up.
"Yesterday, an Association reconnaissance squad entered."
She looked around the room.
"They never came back."
Silence settled over everyone.
Dana folded her arms.
"So..."
"We’re the rescue team."
Yuna nodded.
"We move in ten minutes."
Outside...
Black Guardian Network vehicles waited with engines running.
Rain struck the rooftops in steady rhythm.
Hunters loaded equipment.
Weapons.
Medical supplies.
Communication devices.
Dillan tightened the strap of his combat vest.
A familiar voice stopped him.
"...Be careful."
He turned.
Sasha stood beneath a black umbrella.
She wasn’t smiling.
Not this time.
Her crimson eyes quietly searched his face.
"...I’ll be back."
He answered.
She nodded.
"I know."
"...How?"
A small smile returned.
"...Because..."
"You always come back."
The words stirred something inside him.
Another fragment.
A little boy covered in mud.
Laughing.
"I’m back!"
A little girl throwing her arms around him.
"I knew you would!"
The memory disappeared.
Dillan rubbed his temple.
"...These memories..."
Sasha gently stepped closer.
"...Don’t force them."
"They’ll hurt less if you let them come naturally."
He gave a small nod.
"...Thanks."
She watched him climb into the transport vehicle.
Only after the doors closed...
Did she quietly whisper,
"...Please come back."
Several floors above...
Lyra watched through the rain-covered window.
Her silver eyes remained fixed on Sasha.
The Resonance Field pulsed softly around the crimson-haired woman.
"...You’re worried."
Lyra murmured.
Somehow...
She already knew.
Forty minutes later...
The convoy reached the abandoned subway entrance.
Police barriers surrounded the area.
Association personnel greeted Commander Yuna immediately.
"The readings are getting worse."
One officer reported.
"Every hour."
Dr. Yeon activated a portable scanner.
The screen instantly filled with unstable waveforms.
"...Dreamwave interference."
She whispered.
"It’s everywhere."
The station entrance descended into darkness.
Broken lights flickered overhead.
Old ticket machines stood abandoned.
Water dripped steadily from cracked ceilings.
The deeper they walked...
The quieter everything became.
No trains.
No rats.
Not even echoes.
Only footsteps.
Dana frowned.
"...This place feels wrong."
Sera quietly nodded.
"...Too quiet."
The scanner suddenly beeped.
Dr. Yeon stopped walking.
"...Wait."
Everyone froze.
The readings had changed.
The dreamwave pattern...
Was matching Dillan’s brain activity.
Exactly.
Commander Yuna looked toward him.
"...Stay behind me."
"I’m okay."
"You don’t know that."
She wasn’t taking chances.
Another hundred meters.
Then...
They found them.
Three Association investigators.
Standing perfectly still on the platform.
Facing the empty railway tracks.
"...Association!"
Commander Yuna called.
No response.
"Dana."
Dana cautiously approached the nearest investigator.
"...Sir?"
The man slowly turned around.
His eyes were open.
Completely blank.
"...Go home."
His voice sounded hollow.
"...She’s waiting."
Every investigator repeated the same words.
Exactly together.
"...Go home."
"...She’s waiting."
"...Go home."
"...She’s waiting."
Cold silence filled the station.
Suddenly...
Every light went out.
Darkness swallowed the platform.
Someone inhaled sharply.
The emergency lamps activated one second later.
Dim red lights illuminated the tunnel.
The investigators...
Were gone.
Only empty space remained where they’d been standing.
"...Impossible."
Dana whispered.
No footprints.
No sound.
Nothing.
Dr. Yeon’s scanner shrieked.
BEEP!
BEEP!
BEEP!
She looked down.
"...The readings..."
Commander Yuna stepped closer.
"What is it?"
Yeon’s face slowly lost color.
"...They’re coming from..."
She looked directly at Dillan.
"...You."
Silence.
Dillan frowned.
"...Me?"
"No."
Lyra quietly corrected.
Everyone turned toward her.
Her silver eyes stared into the darkness beyond the tracks.
"...Not him."
"...Behind him."
Every Hunter instinctively spun around.
The platform was empty.
Then...
A soft laugh echoed through the tunnel.
Gentle.
Almost playful.
Far too gentle for a place like this.
Dillan’s heartbeat quickened.
He knew that laugh.
He had heard it before.
In dreams.
In memories.
"...Who’s there?"
His voice disappeared into the darkness.
No answer.
Only...
Three slow footsteps.
Tap.
...
Tap.
...
Tap.
Then silence.
The lights flickered once more.
For the briefest instant...
A little girl stood at the opposite end of the platform.
White dress.
Long dark-red hair.
Glowing crimson eyes.
She smiled.
Not at everyone.
Only at Dillan.
Then...
She was gone.
The System exploded into existence before Dillan’s eyes.
[EMERGENCY WARNING !!!]
[ONEIRIC MALFORMATION DETECTED.]
[HYPER STATE REACTIVATED.]
[DO NOT FOLLOW THE MEMORY.]
Dillan took an involuntary step forward.
"...Wait..."
Dana grabbed his arm.
"Dillan!"
He blinked.
The platform was empty again.
No little girl.
No footsteps.
Nothing.
Only the abandoned station...
And the unbearable feeling...
That someone had just invited him deeper into the darkness.
