Chapter 102: Three Hearts, One Forgotten Promise
The old oak tree stood beneath a sky that had forgotten how to rain.
Clouds gathered above Seoul, but no drops fell.
Everything felt suspended.
Dillan stood beneath the branches with Sasha beside him.
Across from them...
Aurelia.
For twenty-two years, she had existed as a hole in their memories.
Now she was standing directly in front of them.
Real.
Breathing.
Remembered.
And somehow...
That made the silence harder to bear.
Aurelia looked between them.
"...You really remembered."
Dillan nodded.
"...Not everything."
"Enough."
She smiled.
Then her eyes moved toward Sasha.
"...And you?"
Sasha swallowed.
"...Enough to hurt."
Aurelia’s smile softened.
"...Good."
Dillan frowned.
"Good?"
Aurelia touched her chest.
"If remembering me hurts..."
"...then it means I was important."
Sasha’s eyes filled with tears.
"You were."
Aurelia looked away.
"...I know."
A sudden tremor passed through the ground.
The leaves above them rustled violently.
Lyra immediately stepped forward.
"...They’re coming."
Commander Yuna raised her weapon.
"Who?"
Lyra looked toward the sky.
"...The Watchers."
Seven golden eyes slowly appeared behind the clouds.
Not physical eyes.
Observations.
Seven points of awareness pressing against reality.
Dillan felt the pressure immediately.
His pocket watch grew hot.
Tick.
Tick.
Aurelia looked upward.
Her expression became strangely calm.
"...They want me."
Dillan stepped beside her.
"Then they’ll have to come through us."
Aurelia looked at him.
"...You haven’t changed."
He smiled faintly.
"Neither have you."
She laughed softly.
"...That’s not true."
Her blue eyes became darker.
"I’ve changed a lot."
The first golden eye narrowed.
A voice descended.
"Aurelia."
She looked upward.
"Return to the place from which you were removed."
Aurelia smiled.
"...No."
The second eye opened.
"Your existence destabilizes the timeline."
"...Then stabilize it around me."
The third Watcher spoke.
"You were given a purpose."
Aurelia’s smile disappeared.
"...You erased my life."
Silence.
Then...
"You agreed."
Aurelia’s fingers curled.
"I was eight."
The Resonance Field suddenly trembled.
Her voice grew stronger.
"I was eight years old."
The sky darkened.
"I didn’t understand what you were asking."
Aurelia looked toward Dillan.
"He did."
Then Sasha.
"She did."
She looked back toward the Watchers.
"But none of us should have been asked."
Dillan felt something inside his chest shift.
The memory returned.
A little more this time.
The seven Watchers standing around them.
The seven Seats behind them.
Aurelia crying.
Sasha screaming.
And Dillan...
Standing between them.
But there was something else.
Someone else.
A fourth presence.
Someone the children had been protecting.
Someone whose face remained hidden.
Dillan suddenly grabbed his head.
"...Wait."
Sasha immediately caught him.
"Dillan?"
"I remember..."
His breathing became ragged.
"...There was someone else."
Lyra’s expression changed.
"...What?"
"Someone..."
He struggled.
"...Someone we were protecting."
Aurelia suddenly looked terrified.
"...No."
Dillan looked toward her.
"You remember?"
Aurelia shook her head.
"No."
She stepped backward.
"...I don’t want to."
Sasha stared at her.
"...Aurelia?"
Aurelia covered her ears.
"Stop."
Her voice trembled.
"Please."
The Watchers became completely silent.
That silence told Lyra everything.
"...They’re afraid."
Commander Yuna looked at her.
"Of what?"
Lyra slowly looked toward Dillan.
"...Of what he is going to remember next."
The golden eyes vanished.
All seven.
The pressure disappeared.
The sky returned to normal.
Nobody understood why they had withdrawn.
Except Aurelia.
She slowly lowered her hands.
"...They’ve given us time."
Dillan frowned.
"Why?"
Aurelia looked toward him.
"...Because they know what comes next."
"What?"
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
"...The fifth lock."
That Night
Sasha couldn’t sleep.
She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the childhood photograph.
Three children.
Dillan.
Aurelia.
Herself.
She gently touched Dillan’s face.
Then Aurelia’s.
"...We were all together."
Her fingers stopped.
A strange thought entered her mind.
If Aurelia had never disappeared...
Would Dillan have still chosen her?
Would he have loved Aurelia more?
Would he have remembered Sasha at all?
Sasha immediately shook her head.
"...No."
She hated the thought.
Yet...
It remained.
She looked at the photograph again.
Her smile slowly returned.
"...It doesn’t matter."
She whispered.
"...You’re here now."
Her crimson eyes softened.
"...And you’re mine."
She immediately froze.
The words had escaped without permission.
"...Mine?"
She looked down.
Her heartbeat quickened.
Then she laughed nervously.
"...What am I saying?"
She placed the photograph against her chest.
"...Dillan isn’t an object."
Silence.
Her smile faded.
"...Of course he isn’t."
A tiny voice inside her answered.
Then why does it hurt when someone else gets close?
Sasha closed her eyes.
"...Stop."
The voice continued.
Why should they have him?
"...Stop."
Why should Aurelia?
Sasha’s eyes opened.
"...Stop."
Her reflection in the window smiled.
She wasn’t smiling.
For several seconds...
Neither moved.
Then the reflection slowly raised one finger to its lips.
Shhh.
Sasha stepped away from the window.
"...That’s not me."
The reflection continued smiling.
Meanwhile...
Dillan sat awake in his apartment.
The notebook lay open.
A new message appeared.
The Fifth Lock isn’t a memory.
Dillan stared.
Another line appeared.
It’s a choice.
His pocket watch began ticking.
4:26.
4:27.
Then...
A final sentence appeared.
And this time, you won’t be the one choosing.
Dillan’s blood ran cold.
Because beneath the message...
Another name appeared.
Not Sasha.
Not Aurelia.
Not Lyra.
A name he recognized instantly.
Dana.
Dana.
Dillan stared at the name.
For several seconds, he didn’t breathe.
The notebook remained open on the table.
The ink didn’t move.
The message didn’t change.
The Fifth Lock isn’t a memory.
It’s a choice.
And this time, you won’t be the one choosing.
Dana.
"...Dana?"
The moment he said her name...
The pocket watch stopped.
4:27.
Dillan’s expression hardened.
"No."
The System appeared.
[FIFTH LOCK: DORMANT.]
[TRIGGER CONDITION: UNRESOLVED.]
[IDENTIFIED VARIABLE: DANA.]
[WARNING.]
[HOST INTERFERENCE MAY ALTER OUTCOME.]
Dillan immediately grabbed the notebook.
"What does that mean?"
Nothing.
He turned the page.
Blank.
Another.
Blank.
Nothing.
"...Great."
He closed the notebook.
"Very helpful."
The Next Morning
Dana was the first person to notice something was wrong.
Dillan had been staring at her for almost thirty seconds.
She waved a hand in front of his face.
"...Hello?"
He blinked.
"...Sorry."
"You’ve been doing that all morning."
"Doing what?"
"Looking at me like I’m about to explode."
Dillan hesitated.
"...You might."
Dana raised an eyebrow.
"...That’s comforting."
"I mean..."
He lowered his voice.
"...Something’s going to happen to you."
Her expression changed.
"How do you know?"
"I don’t."
"Then why are you acting like you do?"
Dillan looked away.
"...The notebook."
Dana sighed.
"That stupid book again."
"Yeah."
"What did it say?"
He hesitated.
"...Your name."
Dana stared at him.
Then laughed.
"That’s it?"
"Pretty much."
"Dillan..."
She leaned closer.
"...You dragged me into a supernatural conspiracy because a haunted notebook wrote my name?"
"...When you say it like that..."
"That’s exactly what happened."
He sighed.
"...Yeah."
Dana smiled.
"Then we’re fine."
Dillan frowned.
"How are you so calm?"
"Because..."
She tapped his forehead.
"...You’re here."
She smiled.
"And whatever’s coming..."
"...We’ll deal with it."
Across the training hall...
Sasha watched.
Her smile remained perfectly pleasant.
But her fingers slowly tightened around the paper cup in her hand.
Crack.
The cup split.
Coffee spilled across her fingers.
Sera immediately noticed.
"...Sasha?"
Sasha looked down.
"...Oops."
Sera handed her a towel.
"You should be careful."
"...Thank you."
Sasha cleaned her hand.
Her eyes returned to Dillan.
Dana was still standing beside him.
Laughing.
Touching his shoulder.
Sasha smiled.
A perfectly normal smile.
"...They’re close."
Sera looked at her.
"Yes."
Sasha’s eyes remained on them.
"...Very close."
The Resonance Chamber
Lyra stood alone.
She had been investigating the Fifth Lock since dawn.
Nothing made sense.
The first four locks were connected to memory.
The Fifth wasn’t.
It was connected to choice.
And that meant something far worse.
A lock based on memory could be opened by remembering.
A lock based on choice...
Required someone to lose something.
Lyra looked at the readings.
"...What are you hiding?"
The Resonance Field pulsed.
Then...
A tiny image appeared.
Dillan.
Dana.
A Gate.
Blood.
Lyra’s eyes widened.
"...No."
The image vanished.
She immediately activated the emergency system.
D-Class Gate
Three hours later.
The team received an emergency Gate assignment.
A D-class Gate had appeared unexpectedly in the southern district.
Nothing unusual.
Until the Association reported one strange detail.
The Gate’s classification kept changing.
D.
C.
D.
B.
D.
Then...
UNKNOWN.
Commander Yuna immediately frowned.
"...Nobody enters."
Dana looked toward the Gate.
"...But there are civilians trapped inside."
Silence.
Dillan’s expression hardened.
"...We have to go."
Yuna shook her head.
"That’s exactly what it wants."
Dillan looked at the Gate.
"...Then we’ll make it regret calling us."
Dana stepped beside him.
"...Together."
Sasha immediately moved forward.
"I’m coming."
Commander Yuna looked at the three of them.
Then at Lyra.
Lyra’s expression was unreadable.
"...The Gate is reacting to Dillan."
Yuna sighed.
"Of course it is."
Inside...
The Gate swallowed them.
Darkness.
Then...
A school.
Dillan froze.
"...This place..."
Dana looked around.
"...Do you recognize it?"
Dillan nodded slowly.
"...My elementary school."
Sasha’s expression changed.
"...Mine too."
A bell rang.
Ding.
Children’s voices echoed through the hallways.
Laughter.
Footsteps.
Running.
Then...
A classroom door opened.
Inside...
Three desks stood together.
Dillan’s.
Sasha’s.
And Aurelia’s.
Dillan slowly walked inside.
On the blackboard...
Three names had been written.
DILLAN
SASHA
AURELIA
Then...
A fourth name appeared.
Slowly.
Letter by letter.
DANA
Dana stared at the board.
"...Why is my name here?"
The classroom door slammed shut.
BANG!
The lights went out.
A child’s voice whispered from somewhere behind them.
"...Choose."
Dillan turned.
"...Who are you?"
The voice giggled.
"...Choose who stays."
The blackboard changed.
Four names.
One sentence beneath them.
ONLY THREE CAN LEAVE.
Dana’s face went pale.
"...Dillan."
Sasha grabbed his arm.
Aurelia’s image appeared at the far end of the classroom.
She looked terrified.
"...No."
Dillan stared at her.
"Aurelia?"
She shook her head violently.
"...Don’t choose."
The classroom began shaking.
The four names on the board started glowing.
Then the System appeared.
[FIFTH LOCK: ACTIVE.]
[TRIAL INITIATED.]
[CONDITION:]
[ONE MUST BE LEFT BEHIND.]
Dillan’s blood ran cold.
Dana looked at him.
"...Dillan."
He clenched his fists.
"No."
The voice laughed again.
"...You don’t get to save everyone."
The classroom walls began cracking.
Sasha stepped closer to Dillan.
Aurelia reached toward him.
Dana stood frozen.
And for the first time...
Dillan realized the terrifying truth.
The Fifth Lock wasn’t testing whether he could save someone.
It was testing...
who he would choose not to save.
