Chapter 533: The Sea Lion King’s Desperate Charge
The moment the Mythic Blazing Explosive Arrows detonated, the violent explosion unleashed a powerful knockback effect. With a pained roar, the Blue-Eyed Sea Lion King was blasted three meters through the air.
Two enormous yellow damage numbers rose above his head: -23,000, -24,000. Both Marcus and Pebble had landed critical hits, and the damage was astonishing.
Each Mythic Blazing Explosive Arrow had dealt nearly twenty-five thousand damage to the level seventy Golden Boss, and for a brief moment, everyone watching stood frozen in disbelief.
Even Marcus couldn’t help but wonder what Liam Windrunner, the man who had granted him the Mountain Roarer class, would think if he saw this, but still, none of it was beyond his expectations.
He was wielding the Twin-Winged Ice Owl Bow, a Mythic Artifact, while firing Blazing Explosive Arrows that were also Mythic-grade. The arrows alone granted attack power equal to twenty times his level, adding well over a thousand points of damage before any other bonuses were even considered, and that alone was already absurd.
On top of that, he had activated nearly every buff at his disposal, and Freshwind Elara and Lily had layered blessing after blessing over him until he was fighting at the absolute peak of his abilities.
With two Mythic Artifacts and a full suite of buffs, even his ordinary attacks against a level seventy Golden Boss could comfortably exceed four thousand damage. The Blazing Explosive Arrow’s skill then multiplied that damage by three, and a critical hit doubled it again, making it six times the damage.
Under those conditions, hitting the Sea Lion King for around twenty-five thousand damage wasn’t surprising in the slightest; if anything, Marcus had expected the number to be even higher, somewhere closer to thirty thousand.
The underwater environment was probably weakening the arrow’s fire attribute, preventing the flames from reaching their full destructive potential. It was a shame; it could have hit even harder.
There was one other regret: he hadn’t used Insight to inspect the Sea Lion King’s attributes before attacking, and this was the first level seventy Golden Boss he had ever encountered, so he had no idea how much health the creature actually possessed.
Hopefully it wouldn’t collapse too quickly, as that would make for a rather disappointing fight.
Then again, a level seventy Golden Boss wasn’t likely to fall from just a few attacks, no matter how ridiculous his damage had become.
As expected, the Sea Lion King forced himself back to his feet after being blasted across the platform, his blue eyes locking onto Marcus with undisguised fury and murderous intent pouring from every glare. A deafening roar shook the air, and a brilliant blue aura erupted around his body, growing brighter and brighter. His muscles visibly swelled, the pressure radiating from him intensifying by the second, obviously some kind of self-enhancement skill.
Then he charged.
Marcus welcomed him without the slightest hesitation. The instant his first arrow left the bowstring, his hand was already reaching into the Diamond Quiver for another, and in one smooth motion, he drew the string back again.
"Blazing Explosive Arrow."
TWANG!
Another pair of blazing arrows streaked through the air toward the Sea Lion King.
Just like before, they appeared deceptively ordinary while flying, looking no different from a pair of flaming arrows. At the same time, Marcus ordered the two Sea Demon Souls forward, and they rushed ahead of Marcus and Pebble, activating Taunting Light in an attempt to seize the boss’s attention.
Against ordinary monsters, the skill worked remarkably well, but against a Golden Boss over ten levels higher than its summoner, Marcus wasn’t expecting much; the odds of it succeeding were practically nonexistent.
Then his eyes narrowed: as the Sea Lion King charged across the platform, a layer of icy blue frost rapidly spread across his body, and his movements immediately became sluggish, his speed dropping by at least twenty percent.
The Twin-Winged Ice Owl Bow’s Freezing Effect had activated, and it didn’t stop there. The countless vengeful spirits summoned by the Corpse Demon set continued to swarm around the Sea Lion King, clawing at him relentlessly, their haunting cries echoing across the battlefield as they slowed him by another ten percent while continuously inflicting over two hundred points of damage every second.
The Blazing Explosive Arrow had also applied Burn, and flames clung stubbornly to the Sea Lion King’s thick hide, scorching him for another two hundred damage per second.
Marcus almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
The Sea Lion King’s luck had been spectacularly bad, and watching every status effect stack one after another was oddly satisfying.
The contrast between the two of them couldn’t have been clearer: both were surrounded by glowing effects, but while Marcus’s auras strengthened him, every aura covering the Sea Lion King was steadily weakening him instead.
Even so, Marcus found himself wanting more; if only Stun or Blindness had triggered as well, that would have been completely unfair. Then again, the enormous level difference between them probably made those status effects much harder to inflict.
Even so, what he already had was more than enough. Between the bow’s Freezing Effect and the Corpse Demon spirits constantly slowing their target, the level seventy Golden Boss was now moving more slowly than an ordinary level sixty sea lion, and compared to Marcus riding Blackie, the Sea Lion King didn’t stand a chance of catching him.
So Marcus calmly continued retreating while firing one Blazing Explosive Arrow after another.
By the time he had released five more arrows, the Sea Lion King still hadn’t managed to close the distance. Nearly thirty meters separated them, leaving the enraged boss with no choice but to repeatedly unleash Sea Tsunami attacks from afar, the only way he could fight back.
Marcus almost laughed; the Sea Lion King had to be absolutely furious.
Of course, the boss’s attacks were still dangerous: each Sea Tsunami struck Marcus for roughly twenty-five hundred damage.
His Super Health Potions restored only a thousand health per second, so every hit still hurt. Fortunately, the Sea Lion King’s attack speed wasn’t especially high, giving the potions enough time to recover much of the lost health between attacks.
’If I wasn’t wearing the Adamant Shield, this fight would be a lot more troublesome.’ Thankfully, he was, and with its protection, the Sea Lion King’s attacks were threatening, but nowhere near enough to force Marcus onto the defensive.
All he had to do was stay patient, keep his distance, and wear the boss down, one arrow at a time.
