Chapter 510: Tit for Tat
Rosalind White saw the faint red marks on Cecilia Vaughn’s neck, and a wave of disbelief engulfed her entirely.
No... impossible.
Adrian Law, such a genteel gentleman, once showed no qualms in having Wyatt Law throw out a naked woman. How could he possibly conduct such scandalous affairs with Cecilia Vaughn in a place like this?
Adrian has always shunned women’s advances, hasn’t he? What makes Cecilia Vaughn so special?
Adrian married her purely because she was easy to manipulate, with her brother Evan Vaughn having a heart condition and her father Gregory Vaughn being a live-in son-in-law. He just wanted to merge the Sutton Family’s Radiant Group into The Law Group’s domain.
To such a target acquired purely for business interests, how could Adrian even stomach her?
...
Rosalind White stared dazedly at the red marks on Cecilia Vaughn’s neck, almost entranced, feeling as if her heart was bitten by a venomous snake. She couldn’t accept the glaringly obvious answer.
"It must be you, this vixen, who seduced Adrian!"
She raised her hand high, nearly slapping it across Cecilia Vaughn’s face.
Just then, an elegant porcelain-white, yet masculine large hand abruptly seized her wrist.
"Rosalind White, what nonsense are you spouting?"
Rosalind White let out a pained scream, looking up to see an impossibly handsome face reflected in her eyes.
Cold, noble, exuding an aura of unreachable arrogance.
Yet, at this moment, that man, usually distant to strangers, was holding Cecilia Vaughn close, his gaze turning to her, but those alluring eyes were filled with indifference.
...
This evident protection and emotional disparity brought tears to Rosalind White’s eyes.
She clutched her wrist painfully, biting her lip, with her beautiful almond eyes showing deep pleading.
"Adrian, why are you treating Rosalind this way? Is it because of this woman beside you?"
"You know I’m the woman destined for you; I... I once saved you! Besides, Cecilia Vaughn doesn’t even care about her own reputation, daring to seduce you into doing such scandalous things in a box. How could you possibly like a woman like her...?"
As she spoke, Rosalind White’s voice grew firmer, her radiant face seemingly only describable as self-deceiving.
...
Adrian Law glanced indifferently at Rosalind White, quickly turning away as he firmly embraced Cecilia Vaughn beside him.
"Cecilia, are you alright?"
"I’m fine."
Cecilia Vaughn shook her head lightly, naturally seeing Rosalind White’s stance like that of a wronged wife confronting an adulteress, which made Cecilia feel both absurd and amused.
Does saving someone mean you have to force them into reciprocating?
...
Seeing Adrian Law showing no intention to acknowledge her, Rosalind White felt even more frustrated and gloomy.
Tears welled in her eyes, and she almost bit through her delicately red lips.
"Adrian, please, don’t leave! Do you really not wish to see Rosalind anymore?"
"I know last time at Sage’s Mercy Temple, you were tired of me, but I really just wanted to see you too badly."
"You know how much I’ve liked you since we were young..."
The tears of a beauty were akin to a masterpiece, especially with her arched, delicate brows and pitiful, appealing glance towards others, reminiscent of Lady Serenya.
Cecilia Vaughn looked at Rosalind White coldly and sarcastically.
"Miss White, haven’t you misunderstood something? Just because you like a man, does it mean he must respond to your deep feelings? If every girl that admired my husband required a response, wouldn’t that make him a scoundrel?"
"I..."
Rosalind White was instantly choked by Cecilia Vaughn’s words, wiping away her undried tears, looking red-eyed and innocently feeble.
"But... but I’m different from other women; I grew up in the Law Family’s old residence with Adrian, I’m his childhood sweetheart, and I once saved his life..."
Hearing Rosalind White’s forced rationale, an inexplicable feeling welled up inside Cecilia Vaughn.
"A lifesaver? Childhood sweetheart? By those standards, there must be countless men and women fitting those conditions globally, yet we don’t see them all getting married."
"Besides, solely using the term ’lifesaver,’ Adrian and I have engaged in enough charity work benefitting countless individuals; should we then demand love relationships or marriages from them due to the gratitude we once offered?"
...
Though Cecilia Vaughn didn’t raise her voice, each word struck Rosalind White at her sore spots.
"Also, Miss White, if you really want to use the phrase ’lifesaver’ to disgust people, first move out of the Law Family estate, discard the credit card they gave you, and relinquish today’s extravagant clothing and luxurious delicacies, only then can you claim to talk about lifesaving grace."
Cecilia Vaughn raised her almond eyes slightly, thoughtfully surveying the finely tailored black tailored suit and coat Rosalind White wore.
"If I’m not mistaken, isn’t your outfit from Chanel’s latest winter collection? It’s priced well into six figures; have you ever thought of how The Law Family’s repayment for their lifesaving grace might have far exceeded what you originally gave?"
Rosalind White’s face turned beet red.
Feeling uneasy, she twisted her fingers, faintly looking towards Adrian Law.
"Adrian, you know... you know Rosalind’s not the type who loves money. These things, these clothes, credit cards, are all Uncle Law and his wife insisted on giving me. If you don’t like them, I surely... surely won’t use them."
"Besides... Adrian’s life... how can it be measured by material wealth?"
Cecilia Vaughn burst into laughter at Rosalind White’s words.
"Since human life cannot be measured, does that mean you can comfortably continue enjoying these high-value returns? So... you are not in love with my husband, but with him as The Law Family’s eldest son..."
"That’s nonsense! When I met Adrian, he was already The Law Family’s eldest son, aren’t you making false assumptions against me?"
...
Watching Rosalind White’s increasingly uneasy expression, Cecilia Vaughn felt a stronger sense of absurdity.
Just as she intended to continue confronting her, Adrian Law lightly wrapped his arm around her.
"Cecilia, don’t let irrelevant people ruin your mood."
Irrelevant people?
Rosalind White felt as though struck by lightning as Adrian Law led Cecilia Vaughn to close the compartment door directly.
Unwilling to give in, Rosalind White wanted to pursue further disputes, but pleasant piano sounds suddenly resonated throughout the hall.
The auction was officially beginning!
