Chapter 172: The Race
Here’s the Extra Chapter!
Keep it going! 🤙🏼
----
When everyone heard that Haru Urara and the student council president Symboli Rodulf were having a racing match.
They thought it was a joke; all, why would the president challenge someone who had never won once in their entire career, while Symboli Rodulf herself was a top-tier uma, a living modern legend.
No one took it seriously, thinking it was just a joke from someone else.
To their shock, it was real. Although there was no special announcement of this match, everyone still found out, mostly because the entire school staff was at the academy’s racing tracks alongside the entire student council and Haru Urara herself.
It was no joke; the match was as real as it could be, and now, the racing tracks were filled with students and trainers across different sections and grades.
"What the..?! It’s real! How is this even possible?" A chestnut uma said in disbelief.
"Woah, woah, even in my standard this is way too far." Gold Ship said, who was surprisingly serious for once.
"Is this a new way of humiliating someone? This is too much.." Grass Wonder couldn’t help but say.
The other uma’s agreed with this statement; after all, everyone knew Haru Urara’s record; she was no doubt the weakest uma in the academy.
She was a true bottom-tier character; the only reason why she even admitted in the first place was because of her friendly and loving personality. It was an open secret that everyone knew, while others are here because of their achievements and talents.
Haru Urara is purely here to be a mascot; no one expects anything from her aside from being that one adorable and airheaded friend.
Make no mistake, they liked her; hardly anyone disagreed with this; however, when it came to racing, she was basically hopeless.
Now they were looking at the president at the starting gate, wearing her racing uniform to the booth, indicating that she was taking this race seriously.
Meanwhile, Haru Urara was also wearing her racing uniform, but compared to the president, hers was more like a pink tracksuit rather than a proper uniform.
She was the same as ever, that bright smile never disappeared from her face, as if she wasn’t racing a triple-crown Uma Musume, basically feeling no pressure and only thinking of it as a normal race like she always does.
Some couldn’t help but envy this easy-going attitude because they couldn’t stay acting the same if they were in her shoes.
Before starting, Rodulf was warming up.
Seeing this, Air Groove couldn’t help but say. "You’re really taking this seriously, aren’t you? Isn’t that a bit much...?"
Rodulf didn’t look back at her, but she replied. "I am. If what she said was true, then it’s something that should be taken seriously..."
"And if it’s not?" She dared to ask.
"...Who knows." Symboli wasn’t really sure what to do next; this was entirely her idea to begin with.
And finally, it was about to start.
"Alright, both of you on your march."
Rodulf made her stance, then before the gates opened, she couldn’t help but look at Haru’s gate; her pupils widened as she saw the real-time change in Haru’s entire aura, her posture, expression and the way she breathed changed in an instant.
There was no more of that air headed look on her face and that harmless energy around her.
Haru’s entire body was radiating of someone with pure confidence like this race was already predetermined from the very start.
It wasn’t just her who noticed this change, but also the audience. Although Haru’s appearance hardly changed, there was something completely different about her, like she’s an entirely different person altogether.
And those who are at the top could feel it in their very instinct that this girl is very strong.
Naturally, Symboli Rodulf was no different; as someone who is the closest to Haru Urara, she could feel it more than anyone else.
In her eyes, this was no longer the same person standing before her, but a rival whom she should use her everything, every trick, every skill and talent against.
Her breathing became heavy; she had never felt pressure like this,- no in fact, she did; it was when she participated in the Prix De l’Arc De Triomphe.
But that was something she experienced with the combined pressure against multiple rivals, who are top-tier umas in their respective countries.
But never against a single uma; her heart was thumping heavily. It was like she was back at her prime, this exhilarating feeling...
Unconsciously, a wild grin appeared on her face as the countdown began.
"...3."
"... 2."
"1."
A loud buzzing sound echoed through the racetrack, and the gates opened.
Whoosh!
Both racers dashed out the gates at the exact time, both had the perfect start!
"Woah!!!"
Everyone shouted at the audience seat, and most of them were standing up, unable to believe what just happened!
What was supposed to be a joke of a race became something that they never expected: a race between top-tier umas, even if one of them was someone they had no expectations of.
The two were running side by side; both realized that if they didn’t go out from the start, they would surely lose the match.
Considering this was a one-on-one match, there would be no other competitors aside from themselves.
"This is unbelievable! Is that really Haru Urara?!" Special Week exclaimed.
"It’s her, no matter how shocking it may be; it’s definitely her." Silence Suzuka was staring at the race intensely.
"What exactly happened to her? She wasn’t like before...did something happen while she disappeared?" Daiwa Scarlet said, as it was the only logical explanation for this drastic change.
Back to the two racers, although it’s a middle-length race, both were running like it’s a short-length race.
"Hah! Hah...! This is it! The feeling of being alive!" Haru (?) said with a wide smile hanging on her face.
Her body never felt this slow; she was continuously using the very limits of this body.
In her opinion, this body is trash. It lacks proper muscles and stamina, but a handicap like this makes her thrilled beyond imagination.
She couldn’t help but recall the distant past where winning felt like something, and she found it again.
"Running with everything you’ve got is simply the best feeling in the entire world!"
Symboli Rodulf, who was right next to her, heard this and couldn’t help but agree; however, she also realized that this was no longer the Haru Urara that she knew, but an entirely different person who controlled her body.
But before all of that, she was in a race with someone strong, she’d be damned if she didn’t use her all!
They entered the middle line, and they even got faster and faster, neither slowing down nor saving any stamina. From start to finish, they went all out.
And suddenly Haru became hyper-focused at the moment and entered the so-called ’The Zone ’, which most uma musume never entered in their entire lives.
But Haru Urara, at least her counterpart, is a being that could activate this state at will, even using a different body.
So she was getting faster and faster; in the eyes of human trainers, they could see Haru becoming faster, and the gap between her and Rodulf was starting to widen little by little.
"What...?! She actually got even faster! How is this possible? To begin with, her body was significantly weaker than Rodulf’s, but somehow she managed to go toe to toe with her, and now she’s starting to widen the gap?!"
However, it was completely different from Uma’s; they could clearly see the change in Haru’s aura!
It was something unique to their species, where one could see special effects if someone entered a state of absolute focus.
"Do you guys see what I am seeing?! Is that wings on her back?! And those pink petals surrounding her aura?!"
"I can see them too!"
"Is this the legendary zone state? It’s the first time I’ve seen this one up close!"
A shout of awe and excitement echoed through the audience seats.
Symboli Rodulf, who was now running behind Haru, couldn’t help but look at her with a flash of surprise.
Rodulf was no stranger to this state; in fact, it’s a requirement of an uma musume that would define an entire generation.
Every top tier uma’s across the world achieves this state at least once, but no one has ever managed to activate this state at will.
Symboli Rodulf was no exception to this, and those who did were legends, although it remains unconfirmed; Eclipse probably could enter this state at will.
That’s why it was surprising to see this state being activated in an unofficial match, but before she could think more, they were at the final lap.
The gap between the two was widening to a length; it was getting more obvious as seconds passed.
Symboli Rodulf tried her best just to shorten the gap between the two, but it failed, and her one last attempt was a burst with her powerful legs.
Ended as a failure; it never shortened the gap, only widened like her last burst never happened.
Haru won.
Like it was predetermined, no cheering, no sense of achievement, but just there, feeling satisfied, looking at her with a look that made her pause.
It was the look of someone who was above anyone else; for a moment, she couldn’t help but feel how lonely she must be at the peak.
Then, like a puppet without its strings, Haru Urara immediately collapsed to the ground, making the people very concerned, including Symboli Rodulf, who had just lost to her.
Meanwhile, the real Haru Urara felt the backlash of the overload strain in her core muscles, making her want to scream out loud but couldn’t because her body was way too exhausted to do such a thing.
Then a voice very similar to hers but more mature spoke.
"Don’t worry too much about the muscle strain; it might be a bit painful, but you will soon recover. It won’t create long-lasting damage, as I simply unlocked the latent potential of your body; you’re welcome, by the way. But you should train more, or else unlocking your body’s potential would be useless. It was a fun race; do tell her that for me, will you?"
Haru could hardly focus on anything at the moment and just fainted from exhaustion.
"I suppose it’s too much for her, but in the foreseeable future that would have to change. As long as I’m here, you would never lose again my dear self."
–
A/N: Well, that’s it for now. Haru’s future would change for good; as for other uma’s going to the shop, that will be something to think about in the future.
Anyway, like I said, I’m going to be focusing more on the shop and the results after buying certain stuff from it.
But I’ll still write some slice-of-life stuff from the MC.
