Chapter 2101: Southern Ocean Natives

Because it was already very late, Xiao Zheng and Su Ziwen did not chat long with Su Zimo.

Although Su Zimo had mostly recovered by now, illness can be like unraveling silk; having been bedridden for so many days, her body was not completely restored and still required a few more days of bedrest.

Only after Su Zimo drifted peacefully to sleep did Su Ziwen quietly signal to Xiao Zheng to step outside.

The two walked out of the ward and Su Ziwen began, "Brother Xiao, we’ll rest in the room next door tonight. Since Zimo was hospitalized, I’ve constantly slept next door."

"Given that it’s a hospital, it’s somewhat simple inside, Brother Xiao, please don’t be too critical."

Upon hearing this, Xiao Zheng laughed and replied, "What’s there to be critical about? I’ve braved mountain blades and fiery seas, let alone a mere hospital room. Let’s go, it’ll be perfect for a good chat."

Su Ziwen nodded and then led him into the ward next door.

The room was arranged similarly to Su Zimo’s ward; apart from fewer instruments, it included an extra bed.

Two people, two beds.

Just right.

Once in the room, Su Ziwen mysteriously pulled out a fruit basket from somewhere and said, "Brother Xiao, would you like some fruit?"

Upon hearing this, Xiao Zheng promptly shook his head and said, "No need, I’ve already eaten enough tonight."

"Since you’re not eating, neither will I; I don’t feel like washing them anyway." With that, Su Ziwen sat opposite him.

Xiao Zheng seemed unwilling to waste any time, and after conjuring an invisible Vigorous Energy Shield, he began, "Now that there are no outsiders, tell me everything about what’s occurred in the Southern Ocean these past few days."

"From where you visited, to who you encountered, leave no detail unchecked."

Sensing his seriousness, Su Ziwen immediately straightened up.

After carefully recalling, he began to recount their seven-day experience.

As previously mentioned, the Su siblings were invited by the Chen Family to the Southern Ocean for the annual spring welcoming festival. Held at the end of the year, this festival is the grandest occasion aside from New Year’s.

During these seven days, they resided at the Chen Family for the first three days, with Chen Shijie almost daily taking them out to see the sights. Su Zimo’s initial illness appeared on the fourth day after arriving in the Southern Ocean.

"Considering Zimo fell ill on the fourth day, can you recall if you encountered any peculiar people or consumed anything suspicious during those first three days?" Xiao Zheng asked.

Upon hearing this, Su Ziwen frowned and shook his head, responding, "Honestly, I don’t have a strong impression; apart from nighttime rest, the three of us were practically inseparable, and we ate the same things."

"What about on the fourth day? On the day of her illness, did anything strange happen?" Xiao Zheng questioned again.

Something strange?

Su Ziwen fell into recollection once more and suddenly seemed to recall something, saying, "Brother Xiao, now that you mention it, I think I indeed remember something!"

"On the fourth day, all three of us attended a temple fair. During the fair, we encountered a local craftsman selling intricately carved wooden dolls, Zimo showed great interest and even picked one up for a closer look."

"Could it be that the wooden doll was problematic? I really thought that craftsman was dangerous, especially his gaze; just making eye contact gave me goosebumps!"

Upon hearing this, many suspicions arose in Xiao Zheng’s heart.

If that craftsman truly posed a problem, then Chen Shijie might not be involved. Yet, if Chen Shijie wasn’t involved, why did his expression change so oddly when seeing Xiao Zheng detoxify Su Zimo?

This was the most perplexing point for Xiao Zheng thus far.

After contemplating, Xiao Zheng continued to ask, "Then recall properly, when Zimo interacted with the craftsman, did Chen Shijie, standing nearby, show any peculiar behavior?"

"Also, did Zimo end up purchasing that wooden doll?"

At this, Su Ziwen furrowed his brows, saying, "Chen Shijie acted quite normally at the time; aside from urging us to move forward, nothing excessive occurred. Due to his urging, Zimo didn’t purchase the doll."

"Brother Xiao, you surely don’t suspect Chen Shijie, do you?"

"Our Su Family and their Chen Family have always had strong relations, with no past grudges or recent quarrels; he shouldn’t be likely to do something so despicable as harm Zimo, right?"

Upon hearing this, Xiao Zheng shook his head, saying, "If it were before, I might have slightly doubted Chen Shijie. But now, I’m quite certain he knows some truth."

"Ah? Why?" Su Ziwen asked in surprise.

With a slight smile, Xiao Zheng replied, "The craftsman may indeed be the culprit, yet Chen Shijie must have known something was amiss too; otherwise, why else would he urge you all to depart swiftly?"

"Because rationally speaking, you were the guests. As the host, having brought you to the temple fair himself, seeing Su Zimo encounter something she fancied, he had no reason to rush you at all."

"With my analysis complete, do you still consider his behavior normal at the time?"

Hearing this, Su Ziwen was instantly taken aback, disbelief etched across his face.

After all, he and Chen Shijie are considered longtime acquaintances; imagining that Chen Shijie would be entwined in Su Zimo’s poisoning was unfathomable.

"I understand this likely hits you hard, but truth is often harsh," Xiao Zheng remarked, "Also, don’t blame him too much; perhaps he has his reasons."

"Otherwise, if he truly intended to harm Zimo, he wouldn’t have prompted you to leave swiftly then."

"But if he knows the truth, why didn’t he just tell us?" Su Ziwen asked angrily.

Upon hearing this, Xiao Zheng shook his head, saying, "That I cannot answer; if you want to uncover the full truth, you’ll need to ask Chen Shijie directly. Of course, only if he’s willing to share."

With these words, Su Ziwen fell silent.

Could Chen Shijie willingly reveal the truth?
