Chapter 295: Damien Is So Foolish
With that, Damien hung up.
Listening to the merciless dial tone on the other end, Gwen Morgan was so furious she felt her chest would burst.
’Fine. You love being with Cecelia Archer so much, do you? Then I’ll give you what you want! You can both go to hell!’
"Grandpa. Since Damien is about to get busy again, he certainly won’t have time to look after you. Someone needs to be responsible for your health, so please, leave it to me. The Vaughn Group can spare an insignificant person like me, anyway. I’ll get another room at the resort and stay here to keep you company."
The Old Master looked at her gentle face, his heart filled with pity for her.
"There’s no need, Gwen. I’m planning on heading back. You’re running back and forth every day—it’s too much for you."
"It’s no trouble at all. I enjoy being by your side. So it’s settled. If you’re so formal with me, it means you don’t consider me family."
Gwen Morgan immediately booked another room at the resort.
’I refuse to believe I can’t catch Cecelia Archer and Damien Vaughn going out together! We’ll see how he explains himself to the Old Master then!’
Cecelia Archer didn’t step foot outside the room, staying by Damien Vaughn’s side for three days until his condition finally stabilized.
The swelling around his wound began to subside, and his fever broke. Aside from some lingering pain, he had no other symptoms.
Having been cooped up in the room for days, they were both going stir-crazy. That evening, after dinner, Damien Vaughn wanted to go out for a walk. Cecelia Archer saw no reason to refuse and accompanied him.
As the two of them strolled through the resort’s quiet and elegant grounds, admiring the sunset, Gwen Morgan finally got her chance. CLICK, CLICK, CLICK. She snapped a whole series of photos.
However, she didn’t rush to send the photos to the Old Master. She waited until a week later, when Damien Vaughn had his stitches removed. With a mountain of business piled up at the company and Cecelia Archer needing to return to work, the two of them finally left the resort.
Early that morning, Gwen Morgan joined the Old Master for breakfast as she always did, repeatedly glancing his way as if she had something to say but was holding back.
The Old Master noticed she wanted to say something.
"What is it, Gwen? You seem to have something heavy on your mind today."
"I... There’s something that’s been bothering me for days, but I was afraid to tell you. I didn’t want to upset you."
"But you just said we’re family. What could you possibly be afraid to tell me?"
Gwen Morgan hesitantly took out her phone and showed the photos to the Old Master.
"You know I’ve been here at the resort with you these past few days. The other evening, the weather was so nice I decided to go for a walk, and I happened to run into two people. They looked so much like Damien and... I don’t know, I thought I might be seeing things. Grandpa, could you take a look for me?"
Although the Old Master was getting on in years, his eyesight was still quite good.
He took the phone, zoomed in on the photo, and his expression immediately grew grim.
Some photos were taken from behind, others from the side. Although none of them showed their faces clearly, he could see as plain as day that the man in the picture was Damien Vaughn. And the woman beside him...
’Impossible! Isn’t she dead? She’s been dead for months!’
"That’s why I hesitated to tell you. I thought it was impossible, too. But I had someone do some checking these last couple of days, and it seems... Grandpa, do you know Shane Grant?"
’Shane Grant? How did he get dragged into this?’
"Look at this."
Gwen Morgan swiped to the next few photos. In them, Shane Grant was playing with two children, a boy and a girl, in front of a house.
The boy looked vaguely familiar to the Old Master, though he couldn’t recall the name. But the little girl... wasn’t that Candy?
She had lived in the Vaughn family home for so long, and he had doted on her like his own great-granddaughter. He would recognize her even if she were reduced to ash!
But he had personally arranged to have that little bastard sent to an orphanage. How could she possibly be with Shane Grant?
"What is all this? What in the world is going on?!"
Seeing the Old Master’s fury, Gwen Morgan was inwardly ecstatic, but her face showed only confusion.
"I don’t know either. After what happened to his mother, I thought the wicked had been punished, but... Grandpa, do you think this might be a conspiracy?"
"Cecelia Archer got pregnant out of wedlock, and she comes from such a low-class background. Normally, if someone hadn’t deliberately arranged it, how could she possibly have met Damien? And how could she have made him so fond of her and that little bastard?"
"So, are you saying this was all a setup orchestrated by Shane Grant?"
"I wouldn’t dare speculate," Gwen Morgan said, looking terrified.
"But there’s one more thing, Grandpa. The Vaughn Group and the Grant Group never had any business dealings. In fact, our real estate division and Grant Properties are direct competitors. But after that incident, Damien split the international airport project with Grant Properties. He even handed over the two most crucial parts—design and construction—to their people. It’s so unlike his usual way of doing things. Everyone at the company is talking about it..."
The Old Master didn’t know about this.
’The Vaughn Group has always been a shoo-in for projects, completely dominating the field. Since when did we stoop to collaborating with others? And handing over the two most important parts, at that? What the hell has gotten into Damien?!’
His face dark, the Old Master handed the phone back to Gwen Morgan.
Gwen watched his expression and continued.
"If Damien found out I was saying this to you behind his back, he’d surely scold me again. *Sigh*. I’m obviously just trying to help him, but for some reason, he always thinks everything that Cecelia Archer says and does is right, while I... Grandpa, I went to the office yesterday to see Damien, but he wasn’t there. The staff in the President’s Office said they haven’t seen him at all since the company reopened. Where do you think he could possibly be...?"
CRASH! The Old Master swept the breakfast from the table onto the floor.
"That animal! That rebellious whelp! What the hell does he think he’s doing? Give me the phone! I’m calling him right now!"
"Grandpa, are you going to ask him about the photos? What if he asks who took them...?"
"I’m not that stupid. Don’t worry!"
Gwen Morgan gleefully handed the phone to the Old Master.
Damien Vaughn had just arrived at the office when he received a call from his grandfather.
"Grandpa? What is it?"
"I don’t feel well. You dump me at this resort for ages and don’t even bother to visit. Do you even consider me your grandfather anymore?"
"You don’t feel well? Should you go to the hospital? I’ll have Ryan come pick you up right now."
"No need! I’m your grandfather, not Ryan’s. If I have him handle everything, what do I need you for? Get over here right now!"
’Grandpa sounds really upset.’ And it was true that since his injury, he’d avoided seeing him for about ten days to keep him from getting suspicious.
Soon, Damien Vaughn was driving to the resort himself.
When he entered the room, he was surprised to see Gwen Morgan was also there.
Damien Vaughn frowned instinctively. "Why are you still here?"
Before Gwen Morgan could speak, the Old Master snatched the teacup in front of him and hurled it at Damien.
Thanks to Damien Vaughn’s quick reflexes, the scalding tea splashed onto the floor, missing him.
He looked at his grandfather, confused.
"Didn’t you say you weren’t feeling well? I see now you meant you were emotionally unwell."
The Old Master’s voice boomed as he pointed a finger at Damien and cursed.
"You bastard! Is that any way to speak to Gwen? You couldn’t care less if this old man lives or dies, dumping me here without a second thought! She comes here every single day to look after me, only to be humiliated by you! Are you even human?"
