Chapter 278: Who Did You Spend Last Night With?
Back in his car, he plugged in his charger. It was already past ten in the morning.
The moment he turned it on, a flood of messages and missed calls poured in.
Besides the New Year’s greetings and red envelope exchanges, Brandon Jacobs and Wyatt Wynn had also sent a ton of messages, telling him to come hang out at the club.
’This is what this bunch of rich kids are like. No, I should say everyone in the country—except for that idiot Amina—is like this for the first few days of the New Year.’
They’d get together with either relatives or friends to eat and drink, not going home until they were completely wasted.
He’d spent every New Year’s for the past few years at Brandon Jacobs’s club. Since going home would be boring anyway, he gave Brandon a call back.
Brandon Jacobs, true to form, opened his mouth with nothing but taunts.
"Where’d you run off to last night? I texted you, no reply. Called you, phone’s off. Got a new flame? Spend the New Year with someone?"
"Attaboy, Zeke Walton. You’ve always got game when you want it. Where are you now? With them? Who is it? Guy or girl? Bring them over, let us meet them."
Zeke used to not understand why Simone was always laying into their group, constantly looking at them with disdain. Now, he got it.
’So despicable.’
Even though they were grown men—Brandon Jacobs, Wyatt Wynn, and his former self—they really were such smart-asses.
"Can’t I just turn off my phone and get a good night’s sleep for once? All you have in that damn head of yours is sex."
Brandon didn’t buy it. "Well, well, well. Haven’t seen you in a few days, and starting a business has made you all proper. Fine, fine. Come on over and we’ll talk. It’s hard to get the full story over the phone. I’m dying to see just how much of an upstanding gentleman you’ve become."
Soon enough, Zeke Walton arrived at the largest private room in Club DL.
He could hear the deafening noise from inside before he even pushed the door open.
Sure enough, when the attendant at the entrance pushed the door open, he saw two long rows of handsome men and beautiful women. It was quite a sight.
Zeke took off his coat, and before he could spot where Brandon was, a girl came in from behind and tapped him as she passed.
"Zeke? I thought that was you from behind, but I wasn’t sure. Did you just get here? Why didn’t you come last night?"
The speaker was another rich kid from their circle, one of Zeke’s old high school classmates.
They weren’t close, but they often ran into each other at all sorts of gatherings and were on nodding terms.
Zeke knew she had a boyfriend and was just being polite, so he answered her.
"Yeah, I just got here. I had something to do last night. Have you guys been going since yesterday evening?"
The music and chatter were a little too loud; they would have had to shout if they didn’t lean in close. So, Zeke subconsciously leaned his head closer to hers.
The girl said, "Yep. Isn’t this how it is every year? You were always here in past years, but you’ve been pretty tame this year."
Zeke joked, "Can’t be helped. I’m getting old, got to look after my health. You all know I’m my parents’ one and only."
"Haha," the girl laughed, amused.
"Come on, Mr. One and Only. Let’s go sit down. Everyone was talking about you last night, so you’re definitely not getting away without being forced to drink today."
The girl returned to her group of friends, and Zeke went over to where the guys were.
Just as he sat down, Simone Vaughn, who was in the very center of the sofa, slammed her wine glass down in displeasure.
With a SLAM, the freshly filled red wine sloshed out, splashing all over the girl’s skirt.
The girl gasped, instinctively looking down at her skirt, then back at Simone.
She thought it was an accident and that Simone would surely apologize, but instead, Simone was scowling, her expression haughty and arrogant.
"Some people are so desperate. It’s like they’ve never seen a man before, throwing themselves at anyone they see. It’s disgusting."
The family backgrounds of the girls sitting next to Simone couldn’t compare to the Vaughn Family or the Walton Family. In their eyes, Simone was not only Miss Vaughn but also Zeke Walton’s fiancée—a cash cow and a source of connections. So, they all fawned over her.
Everyone had seen Zeke come in just now and had been teasing Simone, saying they were waiting to see her and Zeke’s public displays of affection. But then this girl, who clearly didn’t know her place, had gone and struck up a conversation with him first.
It was only natural that Simone would fly into a rage.
Everyone chimed in to support Simone. "Yeah, who is she? Who invited her? Does our circle have no standards anymore? How can any old riff-raff just waltz in?"
Even if the girl had been a complete idiot, she could tell that Simone was deliberately targeting her.
Having her dress ruined and being insulted so viciously in public, her face instantly turned pale.
"What do you mean by that?"
"Anyone with a brain can understand what it means. Except, of course, for seductresses and two-faced bitches—they only know how to listen to men. Don’t you understand?"
"You!"
"’You’ what? ’Me’ what? I’ve seen people looking for a daddy, a mommy, or a man, but I’ve never seen someone show up just to get cursed out. We didn’t even say it was you. Are you that eager to claim the title?"
With several people ganging up on her and onlookers casting gossipy glances, the girl couldn’t stand the humiliation any longer and shot to her feet.
"Simone Vaughn, don’t think you can do whatever you want and humiliate people just because you’re a Vaughn! I didn’t do anything to you! And let me tell you, I’m not afraid of you!"
How dare this girl challenge her in public, even calling her by her full name? Simone shot to her feet as well.
"What about it? You looking for a fight?"
The girl retorted, "I’m not classless like you, always looking to argue and fight. I want you to apologize. You ruined my skirt; the least you can do is say you’re sorry, right?"
Simone contemptuously looked her up and down, then sneered.
"What street stall did you buy that cheap rag from? On clearance, was it? You’ve got some nerve showing your face in public looking so shabby. And you want me to apologize for a piece of trash like that?"
"You! Simone Vaughn, don’t you go too far!"
"I’m just telling it like it is. If you don’t believe me, ask them."
Simone shrugged arrogantly and looked at the crowd.
"Everyone, tell me, am I right or not? Doesn’t this rag she’s wearing look incredibly cheap?"
Several of the women covered their mouths and giggled. Burning with rage from the humiliation, the girl couldn’t hold back any longer and slapped Simone across the face.
They were all part of Veridia’s circle of rich kids. If she didn’t do something after being humiliated so publicly, she’d never be able to show her face again!
After the slap landed, Simone stood stunned for several long seconds before she even realized she’d been hit.
Her shock and fury were palpable, especially since it had happened in front of so many people—and with Zeke watching.
"You dare to hit me? In my entire goddamn life, not even my grandfather has ever laid a finger on me, and you dare to hit me? Ahhh!"
Seething with rage, she snatched a wine bottle from the table, took aim at the girl’s head, and swung.
The music in the room cut out, and every head turned in their direction in an instant.
The girl herself was stunned.
Just as she thought the bottle was about to smash into her skull, a tall figure suddenly stepped in front of her and caught Simone’s hand.
It was Zeke.
