My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome

Chapter 261: Iron Bastion (Part 2)

The fortress doors finished opening, and the battlefield fell strangely quiet. The endless monster army stopped advancing all at once, and every remaining soldier dropped to a knee in perfect unison.

Raze blinked. "That’s creepy."

Heavy footsteps echoed from somewhere deep inside the fortress.

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

Four enormous armored guardians emerged through the gate, each nearly fifteen meters tall, each carrying a different weapon.

A Greatshield Guardian, wide enough to block half the entrance.

A Halberd Guardian, its polearm easily thirty feet long.

A Greatsword Guardian, blade dragging sparks across the stone floor.

A Warhammer Guardian, the head of its weapon alone larger than a house.

[Guardian Units — Level 62-63.]

Kai smiled. "Now these look like bosses."

The battlefield exploded into motion.

The Greatshield Guardian charged first.

Every step shook the fortress entrance.

BOOM!

BOOM!

BOOM!

Its shield alone was larger than an entire house, iron scraping across the stone as it lowered the enormous slab and accelerated toward them.

Mira stepped forward.

"Mine."

Iron Fortress spread across both arms before racing over her shoulders, chest, and legs like flowing steel.

Golden lines lit beneath the armor.

Guardian Mantle fluttered behind her.

Blast Maul rested against one shoulder.

Kai smiled.

"Perfect matchup."

The Guardian slammed its shield forward.

Mira answered with one swing.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!

The collision blasted a visible ring of compressed air across the battlefield. Broken siege towers collapsed and loose weapons flew through the air.

Neither moved.

The Guardian pushed harder and Mira planted both feet. Stone beneath her boots shattered. Cracks raced outward for dozens of meters.

She smiled. "Cute."

The Guardian struck again but Iron Pulse erupted from her armor. A circular shockwave blasted outward.

The giant staggered.

For the first time Mira immediately stepped inside its guard. Blast Maul came down.

BOOOOOOOOM!!

The Guardian’s shield bent inward. Its massive body slid backward across the stone while carving a trench through the fortress road.

Kai whistled. "She actually pushed it."

The Guardian roared.

Then slammed its shield again.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Mira blocked every single strike as golden runes glowed brighter beneath Iron Fortress and then she grinned. "Little more."

The Guardian raised the shield for one final full-power charge.

Exactly what Mira wanted as she caught the impact head-on. Then everything the Guardian had collected flowed into Ironheart Harness.

The runes blazed.

She exhaled. "My turn."

Blast Maul swung upward.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!

Eight accumulated impacts released simultaneously.

The explosion punched completely through the Guardian’s shield.

Iron shattered.

The enormous construct launched backward through the fortress wall before crashing into three abandoned watchtowers.

Silence.

Then the giant slowly fell apart.

...

Nearby, Raze laughed like a maniac. "COME ON!"

The Greatsword Guardian answered.

CLAAAAAAAAANG!!

Their blades collided, and neither gave ground, Blood Tyrant climbing immediately as crimson markings spread beneath Raze’s skin. The Guardian swung again, and Raze met it again, another collision, another stack, another grin.

"GOOD!"

The Guardian actually adjusted, changing angles, changing rhythm, and Raze laughed even harder. "YOU LEARN TOO?!"

Warstep. His entire body exploded forward, one swing, Blood Wave, and the Guardian blocked it, but the fortress wall behind it split apart anyway. The Guardian countered, and Raze intentionally took the hit across one shoulder, blood spraying before Blood Armor immediately sealed the wound. Blood Tyrant rose higher, his aura visibly thickening, and he became faster, stronger, heavier.

The Guardian noticed. Too late.

Execution Drive. Raze disappeared and appeared underneath the giant’s sword, his greatsword erupting upward.

CRAAAAAAAAAAASH!!

The Guardian’s weapon launched hundreds of feet into the air.

Raze laughed. "No weapon?" He punched it, barehanded, and the giant stumbled.

Then Blood Spears, hundreds, thousands, crimson lances covering the sky before descending together.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!!

The battlefield vanished beneath explosions, and when the smoke cleared the Greatsword Guardian remained standing. Barely.

Raze grinned. "Now that’s what I wanted."

One final swing, Blood Wave, and the Guardian split cleanly down the middle.

Mira intercepted the shield guardian head-on, the two colliding with a shockwave that rippled visibly across the battlefield. Neither of them budged an inch.

Kai whistled. "Found your twin."

Mira smiled without looking away from her opponent. "Let’s see who’s tougher."

Raze charged the greatsword guardian without hesitation, and to his obvious delight, it actually blocked his first swing.

"FINALLY!" he shouted, grinning wide.

Blood Tyrant stacked higher with every exchange, the two greatswords colliding again and again, each clash splitting the earth beneath them a little wider.

Elden faced the halberd guardian, and instead of trying to overpower it directly, he turned the surrounding corridor into a trap. Walls shifted on his command. Gravity fields bloomed underfoot. Runes bled into the stone floor in careful patterns.

The guardian smashed through one trap after another, only to step directly into the next.

Kai laughed, watching from a distance. "That’s definitely your fight."

Kai turned to face the warhammer guardian himself, and unlike everything else he’d fought that day, it predicted his movement with unsettling accuracy, forcing him to constantly adjust mid-swing. The duel turned technical fast, Kai switching stances more than he usually needed to just to stay a half step ahead of it.

One by one, all four guardians finally fell, the last of them collapsing into inert armor plates as the fortress gate stood open behind them.

Inside, the fortress resembled an enormous military headquarters. War maps covered entire tables. Command stations sat abandoned but intact. Barracks lined one hallway, training yards visible through cracked windows, ballista platforms mounted along the upper walls.

Kai looked around slowly. "This wasn’t just defending a position."

"It was preparing for war," Elden finished, studying the layout. "This civilization understood sieges down to the smallest detail."

They moved deeper into the fortress, and runes activated the instant they crossed a hidden threshold. Arrow slits swung open along the walls. Sections of floor rotated without warning. Hidden spears jabbed out from concealed panels. Flaming oil dropped from the ceiling in sudden bursts. Stone crushers slammed down from above at irregular intervals.

Kai laughed, ducking under a spear that nearly caught his shoulder. "Even the building wants us dead."

Elden was practically glowing. "I love whoever designed this place."

For once, the dungeon had become Elden’s personal playground. He identified traps a half-second before they triggered, redirecting several of them straight into the monsters still trailing behind the group, turning the fortress’s own defenses against itself.

Raze laughed, watching a stone crusher flatten three pursuing soldiers instead of any of them. "He’s cheating."

The final doors opened into a gigantic throne hall, rows of broken banners hanging from the ceiling, an empty throne sitting at the far end.

Silence.

Then a suit of black armor rose slowly from the throne, no face beneath the helm, only two glowing crimson eyes.

[Boss Detected.]

[Iron Bastion Commander.]

[Level: 66.]

Silence held. The Commander raised an enormous execution blade slowly, then pointed it directly at Kai.

The Iron Bastion Commander moved. No warning. No roar. One step, and then suddenly it stood directly in front of Kai, its execution blade already descending. Kai barely Air Stepped away.

CRAAAAAAAAASH!!

The entire throne room floor exploded, stone erupting upward like volcanic rock, and Kai landed on a broken pillar. "Fast."

The Commander vanished again, this time appearing before Mira, its stance changing completely, shield raised, heavy, patient, exactly like the Greatshield Guardian. Mira recognized it instantly. "You’re copying them."

The shield slammed downward.

BOOOOOOOOM!!

Mira caught it with Blast Maul, and the floor beneath both fighters collapsed. Neither cared. Iron Pulse exploded outward, and the Commander answered with an identical shield charge, the two tanks battering each other through collapsing pillars while chunks of the ceiling rained around them.

Behind it the Commander suddenly twisted, its shield disappearing as a halberd appeared instead, thirty feet of steel sweeping through the throne room.

Elden’s eyes narrowed. "Incoming."

Gravity doubled, and the halberd slowed, only slightly, but still enough. Kai slipped underneath the blade, and Fractured Blade struck, but the Commander twisted impossibly and the attack missed. "It predicted me."

The halberd became a spear thrust, then a hook, then another sweep, every movement flowing together perfectly.

Elden immediately started reshaping the battlefield, stone walls rising, collapsing, redirecting, floating platforms appearing beneath Kai.

While gravity fields dragged the Commander off balance, only briefly, before it adapted instantly. "It’s reading the terrain."

The Commander changed again. Greatsword.

Raze laughed. "NOW YOU’RE SPEAKING MY LANGUAGE!" Blood Tyrant exploded, and Execution Drive sent the two monsters crashing head-on.

CLAAAAAAAAAAANG!!

Their collision shattered stained-glass windows throughout the throne room.

Raze swung again, again, again, the Commander answering every strike perfectly, neither yielding. Blood Armor spreading further, crimson plates covering Raze’s chest, shoulders, neck.

Blood Waves carved enormous scars across the room, and the Commander answered with identical sweeping attacks until the throne split apart, columns collapsed, and dust swallowed everything.

Then, Warhammer. The Commander lifted it overhead, and Kai’s eyes widened. "MOVE!"

It struck.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!

The entire throne room floor disappeared, not cracked, gone, and everyone fell together. Kai Air Stepped, Raze kicked off falling debris, Mira threw Blast Maul into a collapsing wall before pulling herself after it, and Elden summoned floating stone platforms beneath everyone in rapid succession.

The battle continuing while the castle collapsed beneath them, stone floating, walls rotating, entire staircases breaking away, the Commander walking through the destruction as though gravity no longer mattered.

Kai frowned. "Something’s wrong."

Every time it switched styles, the banners moved, not naturally, almost like signals, and his eyes snapped upward. "The banners."

Elden followed his gaze. "They’re synchronizing the combat styles."

"It’s commanding itself."

Kai smiled. "Then we cut off the commander." He shouted, "DESTROY THE BANNERS!"

Everyone moved instantly. Raze leaped thirty meters upward, Blood Wave, and one banner disappeared. Mira hurled Blast Maul.

BOOOOOOOOM!!

Another exploded. Elden increased gravity around the third, and its supports snapped instantly. Kai Air Stepped, Null Fang appeared, one slash, and the final banner drifted apart.

Silence. For the first time the Commander hesitated. Only half a second. Enough.

Kai appeared before it, and Null Fang pierced straight through the center of its chest, the black blade ignoring every layer of enchanted armor.

Crack. One line spread outward. Then another. The Commander slowly looked down, its crimson eyes flickering.

Kai smiled. "Checkmate." He twisted the blade free.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!

The entire suit of armor exploded into thousands of glowing fragments that rained across the collapsing throne room.

Blue windows appeared.

[Boss Defeated.]

[Dungeon Cleared.]

[Distortion Applied.]

[Reward Quality: Optimized.]

Rewards scattered across the ruined throne room floor, and Kai moved fast to gather them by hand before the collapse got worse. A Bastion Command Core, still warm. An Eternal Fortress Alloy, impossibly heavy for its size. A Siege Command Banner, folded neatly despite everything. A War General Crest. An Iron Bastion Relic, humming faintly.

Raze whistled, watching the pile grow. "Nice haul."

Kai smiled, tucking the last piece away. "So it seems."

The fortress started shaking violently around them a second later, walls cracking, the remains of the throne collapsing entirely.

[Dungeon Collapse Initiated.]

Everyone ran immediately. Hallways crumbled behind them in a rolling wave of destruction. Bridges collapsed the moment their weight left them. Mira simply shoulder-checked through a wall of fallen debris rather than going around it. Raze laughed the entire way, ducking under a falling beam without slowing.

Kai scooped up one last stray material mid-sprint, barely breaking stride.

Elden sighed, jumping a widening crack in the floor. "Only you."

They burst through the fortress gate together, leaping across a final collapsing bridge and clearing the dungeon exit with seconds to spare. Behind them, the crimson gate shattered into scattering fragments of light.

Fresh air greeted them the moment they stepped through. Association hunters gathered outside erupted into cheers immediately, the Central District finally clear.

Kai checked the System.

[Level Up.]

[Level: 64.]

Raze laughed, clapping him on the shoulder. "One step closer."

Kai nodded. "Still a long way from seventy."

Mira looked back toward where the gate had stood only moments earlier. "This dungeon taught us something, though."

Kai glanced over. "What’s that?"

"The longer a fortress survives," she said, "the harder it becomes to actually destroy."

Elden nodded slowly. "Which means preparation matters just as much as raw strength."

Kai smiled, looking out at the cheering crowd gathered around them. "Good thing we’ve been preparing."
