Chapter 276: Chaotic Domain (Part 2)
They kept walking, and nobody said much. Every few minutes the world changed around them without warning. A floating island rotated slowly upside down overhead. Gravity reversed briefly along one stretch of the path, sending loose rocks drifting upward instead of settling. Rain began falling out of the crimson sky, and halfway to the ground every drop froze in place mid-fall, then reversed course, flowing upward instead.
Raze caught one out of the air. "That’s creepy."
The droplet slipped free of his grip and drifted back toward the sky.
Kai watched it go. "Nothing here stays the same for long."
The crimson forest swallowed them one step at a time.
Each tree stretched hundreds of meters into the sky, their trunks thicker than entire city blocks, and their branches intertwined so tightly overhead that they hid the shifting crimson heavens, leaving only scattered shafts of distorted light reaching the ground.
Not a single leaf moved. No breeze. No birds. No insects. Only silence. An oppressive, unnatural silence.
Kai slowed. "Don’t stop walking."
Sera frowned. "Why?"
Kai didn’t answer. Instead, he pointed upward.
A faint crack echoed through the forest. One of the massive trunks split open. Not from damage. Like an eyelid opening. A single enormous eye stared down at them. Then another opened. And another.
Dozens. Hundreds. Thousands. Eyes spread across every trunk in sight, golden, blue, crimson. Some had slit pupils. Others were completely white. Some blinked sideways. Others never blinked at all.
The entire forest was watching them.
Nobody spoke. Even Raze stayed quiet.
One enormous eye slowly followed Kai as he walked. Another tracked Sera. Hundreds more focused on Lily’s floating relics.
Lily swallowed. "They’re all looking at us."
Elden quietly adjusted his glasses. "No. Each one is watching something different."
Kai looked closer, and he realized some weren’t watching them at all. Some stared into empty space. Others looked toward the sky. One was watching another tree, almost as if the forest had been observing this place for countless years.
A single leaf finally drifted downward, and halfway to the ground it turned into ash. Then a flower. Then a feather. Before disappearing entirely.
Raze quietly muttered, "Let’s keep moving."
Nobody argued. They walked the rest of the way through the trees without another word, and it was a long time before any of them stopped feeling watched.
The forest ended without warning, the eyes and silence giving way all at once to something even harder to look at directly.
Beyond it, the earth disappeared beneath bone.
Not scattered remains.
Entire skeletons.
Colossal skeletons.
One skull alone towered higher than Mythal’s outer walls.
Its empty eye sockets were large enough for entire districts to fit inside.
Gigantic ribs curved upward like mountain ranges.
Vertebrae stretched into the distance farther than roads.
Nobody moved.
Mira slowly walked toward the nearest skeleton.
She reached out carefully.
Her armored hand rested against the ancient bone.
It felt warm.
She immediately pulled her hand back.
"Why is it warm?"
Nobody answered.
Kai climbed onto one of the ribs.
Each step echoed softly.
He finally reached the enormous skull.
A single slash crossed the entire side of its face.
One cut.
Perfectly smooth.
Beginning above one eye socket.
Ending near the lower jaw.
Kai stared at it.
"This wasn’t a battle."
Everyone looked over.
He ran his fingers across the edge.
"Whatever killed this only needed one attack."
Silence.
Raze slowly looked toward the horizon.
"You’re telling me something big enough to swallow cities got one-shot?"
Nobody laughed.
Lily quietly whispered, "What kind of monster does that?"
Nobody answered.
Because nobody wanted to imagine it.
They lingered there longer than any of them meant to, none of them quite ready to keep walking past something that size that had died so easily, until Kai finally turned and led them on, and the field of bones slowly fell behind them.
Floating ruins drifted silently between the crimson clouds, and one building slowly passed close enough for Kai to jump onto its balcony. The others followed.
Inside, everything remained exactly where someone had left it. A teacup sat on a table, still full, steam slowly rising from it.
Mira blinked. "That’s impossible."
A chair rocked gently beside it. Books rested neatly on nearby shelves. Paintings still hung perfectly straight, as though whoever had lived here had simply stood up and never returned.
Lily carefully opened one book, ancient symbols filling every page. "I found something." She smiled. Then the words disappeared, every page turning blank. "What?" She flipped through it again. Nothing.
Elden picked up another. This time different writing appeared, and neither of them recognized it. Before either could copy it, it faded too.
Kai quietly looked around. The walls shifted, stone slowly becoming polished white marble, then dark crystal, then rough wood, then metal, the architecture unable to decide what it wanted to be. "It’s changing."
Elden nodded. "No. It’s remembering."
Kai looked at another building, its doorway suddenly becoming twice as tall, ancient statues reshaping themselves into completely different races, murals rewriting themselves, entire civilizations appearing and disappearing in seconds.
"Or forgetting."
Nobody knew which answer was worse.
They didn’t stay long after that. Something about watching a place lose its own history in front of them made none of them want to linger, and one by one they climbed back off the balcony and let the drifting ruins carry themselves away.
Eventually the ruins thinned, drifting apart, and the last floating building fell behind them as the path ahead opened into nothing but sky. The ruins gave way to open sky, and everyone stopped.
Above them an ocean stretched across the heavens, upside down, endless. Schools of glowing fish swam lazily through crystal-clear water, massive whales drifted between clouds as though they weighed nothing, and coral reefs floated beside entire islands, sunlight filtering through the impossible sea and scattering shimmering blue light across the crimson landscape below.
Even Lily lowered her notebook. "It’s beautiful."
Nobody argued.
A whale slowly turned overhead, its eye alone larger than an Association headquarters. It noticed them. For one brief moment it watched. Then it continued swimming.
The ocean rippled. Something else moved beneath it, something far larger. The water bulged outward, clouds scattered, and then a shadow crossed the entire sky. Not fast. Slowly. Like something so enormous that speed no longer mattered. Nobody could even see the creature’s body, only its shadow, and it stretched beyond the horizon.
Minutes passed. The shadow still hadn’t completely crossed overhead.
Raze quietly swallowed. "That’s the biggest thing I’ve ever seen."
Nobody answered, because they still couldn’t tell where it ended. They stood there a long while after the shadow finally finished passing, none of them quite willing to be the first to look away from the sky.
They kept moving beneath that endless shadow until the sound of flowing water reached them first, faint at first, then growing, pulling them away from the sky ocean and around another cliff.
And then they stopped.
A waterfall poured in every direction simultaneously. Some streams fell downward. Others climbed into the sky. Several curled sideways. One circled endlessly around itself, never touching the ground.
Kai picked up a stone. "Let’s test it." He tossed it forward. The stone entered the water. Disappeared.
Everyone waited. "Where did it—"
Thunk.
The same stone landed softly behind Kai, exactly where he’d thrown it from.
Silence.
Kai slowly looked over his shoulder. "Nobody. Touches the water."
Everyone nodded immediately. Nobody questioned that decision. They gave the waterfall a wide berth as they moved past it, and nobody so much as glanced back at it once it was behind them.
The landscape finally opened ahead of them, and all six of them stopped walking at the same moment.
A crater stretched out before them, so enormous they couldn’t see the opposite edge from where they stood. Mountains formed its outer walls. Clouds drifted lazily inside its depths. The center disappeared into shadow no matter how hard anyone tried to focus on it.
Silence held for a long moment.
Then the pressure arrived.
Not gradually. All at once, slamming into every one of them simultaneously. Every instinct screamed the same word.
Run.
Raze’s grin disappeared entirely. Mira’s grip tightened white-knuckled around her hammer. Sera’s shield trembled faintly in her hands despite her best effort to hold it steady. Lily’s Spirit Archers vanished on their own, unable to sustain themselves against the pressure. Elden’s mana flickered unstably around him.
Even Kai felt his own breathing grow heavier, deliberate effort required just to keep it even.
Nobody could see anything down in that crater.
They could only feel it.
Something existed down there. Sleeping. Waiting. Watching.
Kai walked slowly toward the edge, looking down into the endless darkness. Nothing visible, just thick crimson mist swallowing whatever lay beneath it.
Then a single pulse rolled up out of the crater.
The entire structure trembled, not from any earthquake.
A heartbeat.
BOOM.
Silence followed.
Nobody spoke. Kai’s hand tightened slowly around the Fractured Blade.
"It’s down there."
Nobody asked what "it" meant. Every single one of them already knew.
Another heartbeat rolled up from the depths a moment later, slow and impossibly deep, strong enough that even the floating islands drifting overhead trembled in response.
They had finally reached the place where Tiamat waited.
