Chapter 257: Terra Vine (2)
The moment Kai’s foot touched the valley floor, every flower bloomed at once. Thousands, then tens of thousands, the whole valley lighting up emerald and gold in a single breath. Golden pollen rose into the air in a shimmering cloud, and the ground trembled underfoot, roots rippling visibly beneath the surface.
Monsters emerged one after another, and not in small numbers.
Hundreds of Bloom Wolves, Root Hunters, Thorn Bears the size of small houses, and even Vine Serpents coiling through the underbrush.
The whole valley had woken up at once.
Kai grinned slowly. "Looks like Terra Vine doesn’t like visitors."
Lily raised her bow, unbothered. "It doesn’t matter."
Elden twirled his staff once. "We’re leaving anyway. Eventually."
Instead of engaging directly, Lily threw three relay relics into different parts of the valley in quick succession. Kai watched them land. "Experiment?"
She nodded. "Watch."
The relics activated, and Spirit Archers began appearing across the battlefield. Not twelve this time. Twenty-four. Thirty-six. Forty-eight, spread across the entire valley instead of clustered around her. Some perched on massive branches overhead. Some hid inside the newly bloomed flowers. Others materialized behind enormous root systems, covering angles no single archer could have reached alone.
Kai whistled low. "You mapped the whole thing."
Lily shook her head. "No. I claimed it."
The monsters charged, and not recklessly. Bloom Wolves worked together to herd Kai toward a specific corridor. Thorn Bears smashed through cover that might have offered him an escape. Root Hunters fired from angles that shouldn’t have had line of sight. Living vines kept reshaping the terrain underfoot, denying any stable footing.
Lily didn’t try to kill everything immediately. Every arrow she loosed forced a specific dodge, and every dodge pushed the target exactly where she wanted it next.
Kai noticed. "You’re herding them."
"They’re choosing the path," she said, already tracking the next volley. "They just don’t know I chose it for them first."
Kai laughed, deflecting a Root Hunter’s shot mid-sentence. "That’s terrifying."
Elden finally joined in properly, planting relay nodes across the valley floor as he moved. Instead of activating each spell by hand, the network handled the sequencing itself. Gravity fields. Stone pillars. Arcane spheres. Barrier runes. Mana turrets, each one triggering the instant the previous one finished its cycle.
Kai noticed the difference immediately. "No wasted mana anywhere."
"Exactly," Elden said.
The battlefield itself started fighting back on their behalf, monsters caught off guard by traps that never activated in the same sequence twice.
The entire valley erupted.
Bloom Wolves burst from carpets of glowing flowers.
Root Hunters dropped from the branches overhead.
Towering Thorn Bears charged through the trees, flattening everything in their path.
They didn’t come in dozens anymore.
They came in hundreds.
Kai smiled.
"Finally."
The Ashen Seal ignited.
Four weapons burst into orbit around him.
Tempest Fang crackled with lightning.
Bloodthorn spun like a crimson star.
Rootbreaker dragged sparks across the ground.
Verdant Fang hovered behind him, already gathering compressed wind.
The nearest Thorn Bear roared.
Kai never slowed.
Storm Sovereign surged around his body, lightning racing across his arms.
He disappeared.
BOOOOOOM!!
The Bear’s enormous head snapped sideways as Tempest Fang released a compressed shockwave directly into its jaw.
Before the beast even finished falling—
Bloodthorn pierced its exposed chest.
Rootbreaker crashed down.
CRAAAAAASH!!
The entire creature disappeared beneath the impact.
Kai kept running.
Bloom Wolves attempted to surround him.
Lily had already seen it.
"Three seconds."
Kai nodded once.
Spirit Archers shifted throughout the valley.
Not one.
Not five.
Forty-eight.
Every angle disappeared beneath overlapping lines of fire.
The Wolves scattered instinctively.
Exactly where Lily wanted them.
THUNK!
THUNK!
THUNK!
Arrows crossed through the forest from impossible directions.
One Wolf dodged left.
A gravity field caught it.
Another leaped right.
Stone pillars launched it back into the air.
A third tried retreating.
Verdant Fang’s compressed wind blade sliced cleanly through its path.
Within moments—
The entire pack lay motionless.
Lily said quietly "This is what we’ve been missing this whole time."
Kai finally charged in fully, the Ashen Seal flaring to life around him. Four weapons began orbiting his frame at once. Tempest Fang. Rootbreaker. Bloodthorn. Verdant Fang. He cycled through Class Emulations without slowing, Storm Sovereign giving way to Pulse Fist, Pulse Fist to Thread Caster, Thread Caster to Earth Mage, every switch tearing into another section of the valley itself.
Trees collapsed under Rootbreaker’s shockwaves. Roots split apart under Thread Caster’s pull. Stone erupted where Earth Mage’s pillars broke the surface.
He wasn’t fighting the monsters anymore. He was dismantling Terra Vine’s own body piece by piece.
Lily watched, impressed despite herself. "He’s doing it again."
Elden smiled. "He stopped fighting the enemy."
"He started fighting the battlefield instead," Lily finished. "Same as during your spar."
Everything stopped at once. Every surviving monster retreated in perfect unison, and silence dropped over the valley like a held breath.
The ground shook. Ancient trees twisted together at the center of the valley, roots rising skyward, flowers withering instantly across a widening radius. A gigantic creature slowly rose out of the wreckage, its body built entirely from ancient wood and living vine, antlers stretching high enough to disappear into the canopy overhead, roots spreading from its feet in every direction like living cables.
[Verdant Monarch — Level 63.]
Kai narrowed his eyes. "So you’re Terra Vine."
The Monarch didn’t roar. Instead, every root across the entire valley began moving at once.
Kai understood immediately. "The whole dungeon was its body."
The Monarch never attacked them directly. It commanded the dungeon instead. Roots erupted from every direction. Trees uprooted themselves and repositioned. Flowers exploded into clouds of thick pollen that swallowed visibility whole. The battlefield reshaped itself every few seconds, exactly like the Tiamat simulations back in the Blue World.
Kai smiled despite the chaos. "Good practice."
All three of them adapted instantly.
Kai tore through advancing roots the moment they broke ground. Lily stopped predicting the Monarch’s individual movements and started predicting the terrain itself, feeding her Spirit Archers positions a full step ahead of the shifting battlefield.
Elden redirected entire sections of terrain with quick strikes to key anchor points, several relay relics activating automatically in response to the chaos. Healing barriers bloomed whenever a strike landed on Kai.
Gravity fields triggered beneath charging monsters before they closed the distance. Arcane spheres intercepted flying vine whips mid-arc.
Kai laughed, cutting through another wave of roots. "Now this actually feels like our simulations."
The battle climbed toward its peak, the Monarch’s attacks escalating with every passing minute, roots thickening, pollen clouds growing dense enough to blot out the canopy light entirely.
Lily called out suddenly, "Kai."
"How long?" he answered immediately, already braced.
"Seven seconds."
Kai nodded. Elden smiled. "Enough."
Nobody needed further explanation. They already understood exactly what came next.
The relay network activated in sequence. One relic, then another, then a third, the chain reaction building faster with each link. Spirit Archers fired in perfect unison. Gravity doubled beneath the Monarch’s feet. Stone pillars launched it skyward before it could brace. Barrier runes locked its massive frame in place mid-air.
Kai Air Stepped straight up after it, Storm Sovereign unfurling around him, lightning crawling across his blade and body both. At the same instant, Lily fired one final arrow, not at the Monarch itself.
At Tempest Fang.
The relay crystal she’d embedded earlier caught both attacks at once, amplifying them together, lightning and stored mana merging into something neither of them could have produced alone.
Kai swung.
A gigantic blade of emerald lightning tore downward through the sky, and the Verdant Monarch split cleanly in two, its massive body coming apart in a single stroke.
Silence.
Then the entire valley began dissolving around them. Trees crumbled into loose bark and splinters. Flowers turned to drifting light. Roots collapsed into fine dust that scattered on a wind that hadn’t existed a moment earlier.
Blue windows appeared in front of Kai.
[Boss Defeated.]
[Dungeon Cleared.]
[Distortion Applied.]
[Reward Quality: Optimized.]
Golden light rained down across the collapsing battlefield, and rare materials scattered across the ground where the Monarch had fallen. Kai moved quickly, gathering everything by hand before the dungeon’s collapse could bury it: a Verdant Crown Relic, still faintly glowing. A Nature Relay Crystal. A Living Forest Core, warm to the touch. An Ancient Root Heart. A Verdant Authority Seed. Handfuls of high-grade monster materials scattered among the fading roots.
Lily grabbed the Nature Relay Crystal the instant she saw it. Elden secured the relics into a padded case. Kai stuffed the rest into his own pack without ceremony.
Then the ground shook violently, cracks racing across the valley floor in every direction.
Elden looked up sharply. "The dungeon is collapsing."
"Run," Kai said, already moving.
They sprinted back the way they’d come, the forest collapsing behind them in a rolling wave of destruction. Ancient trees toppled. Roots disintegrated into nothing. Entire cliffs caved inward as they passed beneath them.
The exit gate came into view ahead. Kai made it through first, Lily right behind him, and Elden dove through the shrinking gap just as the tunnel behind him caved in completely.
The moment all three of them cleared the exit, the crimson gate itself began shaking violently, deep cracks spreading across its surface. The hunters waiting outside scrambled backward on instinct.
BOOOOOOM!!
The Terra Vine gate shattered into thousands of crimson fragments before dissolving entirely into scattered particles of light.
Silence.
Another B-Rank dungeon, gone for good.
The three of them stood outside catching their breath, and Lily was already staring at the Nature Relay Crystal in her hand before her lungs had fully caught up with her.
Kai laughed between breaths. "You started researching before we even stopped breathing."
She ignored him entirely, eyes widening. "Kai."
He looked over.
"The Monarch never controlled every root individually," she said, turning the crystal over slowly. "It issued one command. The battlefield obeyed automatically after that."
Elden caught on immediately. "Like a relay network."
Lily nodded, practically vibrating despite the exhaustion. "If we redesign the Disaster Plan around command relays instead of individual activations, the city itself could react on its own, the same way this dungeon just did."
Kai smiled slowly. Another improvement. Another step closer to something real.
He looked back toward the empty patch of ground where Terra Vine’s gate had stood only minutes earlier.
"Let’s take this home."
The three of them started walking back toward Mythal together, carrying another piece of the future with them.
